Compaq Presario V5000

One hinge just snaped. Now the screen has to be bent for it to work. Not the greatest way of saying "please come again!" when walking out of the compaq store with all thses problems

Bought a Pavilion DV5 14 months ago and the display hinges are now a single unit and both sides have failed so basically the two halves are held together with the wiring! Not only do the hinges snap but it also pulls them off the display cover so that need replacing too.

Had numerous calls with HP being passed around and being cut off and eventually got through the the 30 people strong complaints team. I got the text book answer of not a "known issue" so we won't pay for the repair. They sometimes accept repairs within 14 days of the end of the warranty period but that is it.

Apparently they don't accept there is a problem until enough of us have logged these hinge failures with them by calling HP direct that they start believing us. Don't know how many compliants they need before they believe us but make sure you call!

Clearly HP have no idea what customer service is!

The repair of the machine in my situation only kicked the can down the road. The cracked case from what I was told due to an overtightened hinge screw was repaired with a new screen case. Two years after and a month after the extended warranty expired the same left hinge was smoking and was glowing a bright red. H P had me sent the machine in for review and it was sent back in the same condition. The repair of the monitor cable was broken and for $550 they would fix it. This is the same left hinge that was fixed once under my extended warranty. So just over three years my left hinge was in need of two repairs which would have cost more than the cost of the machine and this was acceptable failure according to HP.

I too have this hinge problem...at this point, not sure what to do about it. hopefully I can find some resolve in the future on here. I too believe this is a manufacturing defect and HP is resposible.

Wow, can't believe this many people have had the same problem. I bought my laptop about 3 years ago and noticed about months ago that the side of the casing was splitting. Now the left hinge is about to drop off. after reading everyones posts i don't feel like it would be worth wasting any time contacting HP. I have bought replacement hinges on ebay for $12 and there are videos online on how to fit them...with a bit of glue i think it should all be good...will report back!
