My left hinge broke about a year after purchase (March 2007), but was failing long before that. It was replaced under my extended warranty. Now my right hinge just snapped after trying to close my screen yesterday. This makes me so angry! It's an obivious design flaw! I'm not sending my laptop to HP. I'm going to find the parts on eBay and repair myself. Better learn how to fix it since it's bound to happen again in the near future...

I use a dv6000. Mine is broken on the right side and has been slowly chipping away. I have it currently covered with duct tape. I mean come on! I have always supported HP, but this is really bringing me down. My laptop has become a DESKTOP. I will not be buying from the company in the future.

I mean, seriously. My computer was fine. Then I woke up and it was cracked. Literally. A refund should be issued!

I also have a cracked lid, unfortunately for me, it's on the right side and occured after their program expired (not that I knew about it at the time anyway). I sent it in to HP after doing some research and confirming that my extended total care plan that I paid for when I bought the laptop (July 07) would indeed cover the damage, but was just informed that they would NOT be repairing it without charging me an additional ~$250. No amount of arguing would convince them to fix it, so I told them to send it back. I'm trying to find out who else to contact at HP to get results, but don't hold much hope for a repair. It's not only the hinge that is broken, but the case and hinge cover as well, requiring the entire display to be replaced (according to the money grubbing HP tech). Now I'm stuck with a laptop that doesn't go to sleep when closed and won't stay open when in use.

I found hinges for this computer on e-bay for $8.99 delivered. here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-17-LCD-Hinges-Hinge-HP-Pavilion-DV9000-Display-/170378698853?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27ab5ca065
Also, a lawyer is looking into a class action suit. Here's the link: http://www.lawyerseek.com/Practice/Consumer-Protection-C21/HP-DV9000-Laptop-Hinge-Cracks-P168/
I contacted HP and got no reply, so I gave my info to the lawyer, e-mailed HP's CEO (through their "contact us" page) and bought the hinges on e-bay for the $8.99
Let's let HP know it's not OK to sell lemons and turn your back on your loyal customers.

Well, my dv5223om just experienced a left hinge failure. Only thing available on line so far that I can see are used ones from Ebay. Should I take a chance?

Have same issue, bought dv9260us computer Feb 2007 at CompUSA $2300 out the door--was expecting to get 5yrs out of it since I bought top of line at the time. Rarely move it at all, usually leave it in same spot and chk email 4-5 times a week. Crack on left, popping when trying to open or close--gave no warning, was not having any issues with the closing until a couple days ago, seperating near security hole.

Based on the volume of posts, a class action sounds like good idea...how do we get started, and do we have to have a lawyer?

If getting new hinges will fix it, does someone know if instructions come with the hinges. If I tackle this myself, I will make a video and post in case others want to do the same (if it fixes the issue).

First things first..I was totally surprised to find a website dedicated for broken laptop hinges!!! that said..thanks for the site where I got to read the experiences of other HP users.

My laptop is DV5000 series pavilion. 4 years old and a couple of days. Today morning I felt that something was wrong with the way my laptop's lcd display was moving. It took a while for me figure out that it was the left hinge that cracked and was the culprit. What a shame that HP and ist associate service centres are just a bunch of thugs trying to rob customers.

When I went to the authorized service centre @ Hyderabad, I got the shock of my life that HP does not replace the hinges alone..so I was suggested to get the whole LCD replaced!! which would cost me about 15000 Rs or more. I came back home disappointed and did a search on google and that was how I bumped into this site. Thanks Joe (post # 81) for the site. I am planing to order the hinges and get the old ones replaced.

This is the last time I would ever recommend HP to anybody!!
