HP Model dv5000 notebook hinge crack
By admin | August 21, 2008
A few people have started to post about their experience with the HP Pavillion dv5000 notebook hinge cracking. I have no experience with this model, but have decided to create this post so others can post their experiences.
Please reply to this post with when you bought your notebook, how long it took to crack, and any specific details about the damage. If you’ve contacted HP, post those details here, but only if you’re using the dv5000 model.

Same problem after owning for two years I am searching for repair parts hinge on left side broke. have been looking for a week now. this is frustrating
September 7th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
I have a DV5000 and the hinge cracked last week. It is 2 years old. Bummer!!! The hinge at HP is $ 70…. I am really upset about it now that I know this is potentially a material/engeneering defect.
Is there is a class action suit for the DV 5000 like there is for the DV6000 and 9000 owners( same problem) ?

Same story - 2 yrs old - hinge cracked…
September 12th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
two or three years old and just cracked

The reason the laptop hinges broke on my hp pavilion zv 5000 is the same as reported by many people on this web-site, the hot running conditions.
I tried several times to get the hp personnel to repair the hinges without success. I finally sent the computer in for repair and paid the $327.00. A couple months after the repair the computer stopped working and wouldn’t even boot up. I took the computer to Staples for diagnosis, because I was on vacation. The tech was very helpful and determined that the battery was defective and drained the electricity preventing the computer to boot up. Prior to this fatal error the computer ran hot because the “premium” lithium ion battery I purchased with the computer consumed most of the electricity, causing the hot running condition and thus the plastic hinge to break down. I took out the defective battery and the computer hasn’t run hot since (now the fan doesn’t come on but it always came on before the battery failed). As many others on this web-site have said, I am very disappointed in the way hp treats its customers with their defective products. Hope some people can benefit from this tale of woe.
I had a 3 year service pack that, of course, just expired before the hinges craked. hp extended no goodwill.

Same story as every one else - 2 years old dv5000 and the left hinge cracked. What is everyone doing to address this problem? Has anyone talked to HP about this?
October 14th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Same story 2 1/2 years old, dv 5000 right hinge broke.
It seems like the hinge is binding up and causing it to break!
October 16th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Right side hinge broke had hp laptop for 2 1/2 yrs.
October 18th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Same deal here. Left hinge broke about 6 months ago, and now the right hinge has broke, so the screen won’t stay open.
October 28th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
same story hinges crack and the screen wont stay up. 3 1/2 year old laptop
November 2nd, 2008 at 10:53 am
Yep … same here … ZV5000 bought in Nov. 2006. Right hinge is cracked. And yep, it looks as though it gets binded up when opening. I have seen a website that intructions how to change the backlight on this machine. Looks useful for at least getting a glimpse at the hinge to try and troubleshoot wwwdotinstructabledotcom and search for zv5000. Might help, I don’t know … haven’t worked with mine yet.

Sorry the sites was “instructables” not “instructable”
November 4th, 2008 at 4:51 am
Same ol’ story… Except I am in the Czech Republic on a study abroad. After the hinge broke, it was still usable, though quite annoying. Just yesterday, the screen came unplugged from the body and now the screen will not come on. Any solutions? Yes, I tried plugging it back in… still nothing…
November 9th, 2008 at 8:49 am
I have a HP dv9000 17″ screen, purchased little over 2 years ago, left hinge just broke in the past 2 weeks, very disappointing, considering how much this laptop cost.
November 19th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Same. dv5139us - 2.5 years old. Hinges are broken on both sides. Happened all of a sudden. Now the monitor gives about an inch also. Not sure what to do b/c software and hardware are in perfect condition.
November 24th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Exactly the same problem as Erica. Laptop 2 years old. One hinge broke, the other gives about an inch. The broken one now binds up and is trying to break out of the screen frame. The rest of my V5000 works perfectly.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:30 am
Exactly the same problem with my dv9500. One year and 1 month old and the hinge is shot. It’s loose, closes on its own and is hard to open. Had trouble opening the stupid latch in the first place. Now it’s next to impossible. I’m just waiting for it to completely break off. I emailed support and was told there was NO defect in this model, instead it was due to usage, wear and tear. So in other words, the life of an HP laptop is a year? Do the math, $1300 plus for one year of use? And of course the warranty just expired. After telling me it wasn’t an HP problem, the tech has the nerve to ask if they’ve addressed my problem satisfactorily? Get real! Not one suggestion on how to have it repaired even at my expense. Totally useless communication. .

HP Pavilion DV5150US HINGE PROBLEM
Called tech support today. My hinges broke just under two years (both within the past week).
Complete joke. 3 Phone calls:
1st call: It will be $298 to fix
2nd call: It will be $298, but you will get a credit of $198 so it will only cost you $100. When I told him to just charge me the $100 then, he said, “Well, I’m really not sure it will only be $100, it could be the full $298. Asked to talk to supervisor and he hung up on me.
3rd call: Asked to talk directly to manager, they told me “there are no managers at the call center”. I re-explained my problem and they told me that a manager would say the same thing. I replied “But I thought there were no managers”… Operator hung up.
Long story short… buy a Dell…
December 6th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
HP pavillion dv5120us 17″ screen bought in Feb 06. left hinge cracked 8/08, bought a used hinge off of ebay for $15, fixed, no big deal. Now the right one cracked today, 12/08, and I can’t find the right one used - only a set of 2 new.
December 7th, 2008 at 12:32 am
I had the same problem
I ordered a new pair of hinges on ebay from china, they cost like 20 bucks with 10$ delivery. Its really easy to replace them yourself. the delivery took about 14 days to montreal but it was worth it as i saved almost 270$
December 7th, 2008 at 11:41 am
I joined the list. I have a dv5000 HP laptop and at first the screen would stay up when put at a 90+ degree angle. Now it will not stay up at all. I just disassembled the screen case and found both hinges broken. My laptop is approx 3 years old. All I need to repair is the 2 hinges. All they are is 2 cast metal brackets that attach to 2 stamped metal brackets. All I need is the cast metal parts. My estimates is they shouldn’t cost more than $1 each. From what I’m seeing here….looks like they could run 1000 times that.
December 7th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Actually I double checked my laptop and found is a dz5000. Still both hinges have broken. I did some surfing and found the hinges available from a UK and China company for around $60. I ened up buying them from the China company on ebay. I’m hoping they had several positive feedback and used Paypal to purchase so I don’t get ripped off. The other company was a UK company that was on the internet. If everything works the fix will cost $60 and 30 minutes. If anyone needs info on the fix…just email me.
December 13th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Same thing happened to me. A couple of days ago I just noticed that the left hinge on my dv5000 is broke. I noticed problems before when I closed the screen down, but now it is ridiculous. The whole top left binds up when I try to close it, and the back opens up. How does this even happen? I think HP needs to FIX THIS right now! What did everybody else do to fix this problem. I am not a happy camper.
December 17th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Mine is about 3.5 years old. No heat damage, hinge just gave out or wore out.
December 19th, 2008 at 6:46 am
Wow, I thought it was something I did. I hve a DV900 - 2 years old - left hinge is broke….
December 19th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Good news, HP is repairing these left hinge problems for free. I just got off of the phone with them.
December 19th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
my dv5000’s hinges just cracked.. i’ve had it for a bit over 2 years.
December 20th, 2008 at 9:11 am
Well I have a semi success story. I stated earlier my laptop was a dv5000, actually it’s a zv5000. Still both hinges broke. I saw the posting here saying HP charges $327 to fix them. It’s my backup laptop so I decided to to take a chance and open the lid to see what was broken myself. I found on both sides that the hing part was cast metal not steel. From the stress of opening and closing both failed and a piece had broken off both sides. The hing uses friction to stay open, so no friction…no stay open. I found the part number on the side of the hinge and did some surfing. I found 2 people on ebay that sell a replacment set. One is UK, one China. I went with the China and for $60 a had a set of hinges. I ordered them on 12/7 and yesterday 12/19 they arrived and are now installed. Problem fixed. Not bad turn around given they shipped from China. The less than success part of this story is I probably should have started with HP…from a few other posts I saw after ordering I might have gotten HP to fix for free. If anyone is curious about the fix and doing it themselves just email me I’ll give you more details. mark0530@earthlink.net
December 20th, 2008 at 11:22 am
The hinge on my Compaq V5205NR has broken as well. Worst laptop I have ever owned, hands down (I’ve owned plenty, from many mfg’s: Toshiba, Dell, HP, and IBM)
December 20th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
same story. I thought I bought a quality computer…. it is definately a defect. Glad we can odrer hinges but we should even have to fix it ourselves…
December 20th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
er.. I ment we SHOULDN’T have to fix it ourselves
December 26th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
I have a zv500 series HP laptop with the hinge broken.
s/n - CND4451D2v
p/n - PL996VA#ABA
service tag - ZV5320US
This model is not listed on HPs website as part of free repair? what should I do?
December 26th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
I have the same problem. My laptops left hinge suddenly snapped after about 2 years. I took it to the store where I bought it and they wouldn’t fix it even though it was still under warranty and they wouldn’t even fix it at my expense! After about another month the other hinge broke and the only thing connecting the screen to the rest of the computer are the wires. My poor laptop is being propped up by a cardboard box and no longer moves
every one I take it to says it will cost 400+ to fix and for that much I could pretty much buy a new laptop but I just cant afford it. I am a seriously unhappy camper. Any advice to what I can do?
December 31st, 2008 at 8:19 am
Also, what did everyone else do to fix the dv5000 issue?? My warranty is a year late, yet I did nothing personal to this computer to cause this situation: no drop, nothing. The crack just happened all of a sudden. Anyone have a chance at getting this fixed by HP for free???
January 4th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
I have a dv5000 and yesterday the hinge problem just arose. Also this computer has a lousy plug for the power and the part that holds the battery strips. I would urge everybody to write and contact HP. Clearly there is a flaw in numerous models and HP needs to make it right for all.
January 8th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Have a zv5000 two cracked hinges (pot metal on the parts that takes the most physical abuse good going engineers) also the power connection jack is as bad as the hinges. Perhaps HP should hire a mechanical engineer along with all the electrical people
January 8th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
I have a HP dv5000 laptop that was purchased 1/7/07. After 1 1/2 years the left hinge broke. It just snapped for no reason. I think HP should repair this at no charge. It is obviously a design flaw.
January 9th, 2009 at 11:19 am
My daughter’s computer a dv5000 series, 2.5 years old. The Left lower hinge separated. This is upsurd and I think that with all of theses complaints, HP should recall these models like they did for the 9v9000 series!!
January 10th, 2009 at 11:54 am
BOTH hinges on my DV5135nr totally snapped off after just a few years. Also just today my other HP laptop (dv6000) cracked a hinge and its been perfectly taken care of, hp really needs to fix this problem.
January 12th, 2009 at 11:48 am
Glad to see this wasn’t just me. I’ve had my dv5000 for almost 3 years. Came with a faulty motherboard and just recently the left hinge snapped. Now it’s pulling the frame around the screen off. I actually duct taped it. It’s definitely a design flaw because the hinge has a seam on the back it isn’t just a solid piece.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:12 am
Same story.
2.5 Years old HP DV5000. Left Hinge Gone.
Also, the laptop getting automatically shut down after heating up.
I don;t know the solution. Anybody in Delhi (India) area if have any pointers….

I have a dv5000 with the same problem. Left hinge, is hp going to help? I also have a dv 9500 that has a crack in the lcd. I originally sent it back to hp because there was something running down the screen and I didn’t know what it was. When I got it back, hp told me that it had been wet. They said somebody got it wet, well why was there a crack down the right hand side of the LCD when it got back to me, unrepaired? They told me it would be 800 to fix, it is a brand new computer! It was 5 months old when I sent it to them. I used to recommend hp to everyone, I am starting to wonder why. Customer service is horrible, can not understand a word they are saying to you. What do I do? Help HP!! please
January 21st, 2009 at 11:27 am
I have a hp dv5ooo that also has the left hinge broken. I can’t even close the computer. I bought it at sams clud may 2006. The warranty has run out so I don’t know if hp will repair it. It sure would be nice, since I bought a dv9500 in December 08, at sams club and the screen started running at the top, I sent it in and hp told me that it had been wet. I did not get the computer wet! They sent the computer back to me and it then had a crack down the right side of the screen. It was not there when it was sent to them! Now I am searching for a LCD for a 9500 and a hinge for the dv5000. It is a shame that you stay loyal to hp and they treat you like crap when you try to call them for something. I am so upset I don’t know what to do now. Please help!!

January 26th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
Add me to the list. hp is worthless if you are seeking help. Look online for replacement hinges - you can find them for under $50. Then go online again and you can find step-by-step instructions for replacement. Why does the consumer have to put up with this? I just bought each of my 3 kids an hp laptop for high school/college during the holidays. Sure wish I would have seen this website first. I am done with hp. The least we can all do is get the word out. I intend to tell anyone who’ll listen!
January 29th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
I’ve had my laptop for at least 3 years now and not only does my fan barely work, but the left hinge is so broken that I have to work with the screen so that it shows the picture. Sadly, the screen gets lines in it and sometimes the lines grow to where I can’t move the screen enough to fix it, so i can actually see; I have to shut the lap top off and turn it back on, THEN move the screen to fix it.
This is very annoying, since I’m a College Student and I NEED to laptop. I have a Gateway Desktop and even that won’t work, it freezes as soon as I load up the desktop. It’s annoying, and I hope HP starts doing something very soon, or I’m going to scream.
Gateway will fix a computer, but even if you have the warranty you have to pay 60 dollars just to have it shipped out. No way!
February 4th, 2009 at 9:54 am
same story. left hinge near fan outlet is broke. thought i did something do it. i guess not. dv5000 about 2 1/2 years old
February 5th, 2009 at 6:31 am
One hinge broke about a week ago and the second broke today! Opened up the hinge case and saw that two parts had fractured. The female part of the hinge broke and no way to glue or repair them. Saw on ebay zv5000 hinges cost about $50 or so plus $10 shipping from Hong Kong. Actually the hinges work on HP models zv5000, zx5000, and zv6000 with 15.4 inch screen. I will probably order and replace them myself. I’ll repost and add pictures if possible. If my repairs work, I might be willing to help others as well. Do step by step instructions, or do the repairs for you at a small cost. I’m very handy at electronics repairs. Let us see what happens.
February 13th, 2009 at 8:29 am
okay, its official. my hinge on the left side is now completely broken, and i can’t even close my screen because it is lifting up and breaking the plastic trim around the top of the keyboard near the base of the screen.
February 13th, 2009 at 9:12 am
I have a dv9005us…left hing and frame above hinge broke after 2 years. HP sent me box to return it, repair for free. They told me I have until May 2009 to have it repaired..mail it in before then, all is good. I mailed it in and they received it on the 2nd. After checking the status online, saw my order was cancelled!! Now no one knows where my laptop is..or so it seems. They keep telling me they have to reopen the case for it and it will be fixed..but I keep getitng the same story every time I call. What do you do if they don’t give it back?? If they’re not going to fix it I want it back!
February 14th, 2009 at 8:20 am
i see some people say to look at the instructables website but i do not know how helpful that is. if you google, “dv5000 maintenance guide” you can actually download the real guide from hp. i just took my screen apart and am waiting on the hinges. i bought the hinges on ebay. the manual is very helpful.
February 16th, 2009 at 1:39 am
This seems like a serious problem. My dv5000us had the same problem. 18 months old. I took it to Best Buy for repairs and those bandits were going to charge me $918.00 to repair it. HP should do something about this.
February 18th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Exact same story. Mine is about 3 years old, and luckily I had a 3 yr warranty on it, so I got the hinge fixed. Unfortunately, I still have the lines across the screen. I like the broken hinge caused the connection to the screen to get messed up. I really think HP should recall these computers, I’ve had so many problems… My fan stopped working, I had issues with overheating, my speakers stopped working, the paint rubbed off the speakers and the exposed metal of the speakers would send little electrical shocks into my wrists when I was typing, and now this. This is the worst computer I’ve ever had, and I’m never buying from HP again.
February 21st, 2009 at 12:46 am
REPAIRED HINGES! okay, it took me 2 1/2 hours but that was with running up and downstairs to a printer at a hotel so i could print off certain sections of the pdf maintenance file. if you have another computer by your side while you are doing this, it will make it much faster, probably 1 1/2 hours. the one step that i did not do was detach the display wires and led wire for the wireless indicating light. all i did was lift the monitor up slightly on the side i was working on to get to the hinge. the other thing that took me forever to figure out was our to open the “zero something clips”. these are clips that are holding the ribbons attached to the keyboard in place. in order to unlock them, you need to slide both black knobs on either side of the white clip towards the display screen. do not lift them up. the two blacks knobs are actually attached to the same piece so i would move each side slowly forward. they do not tell you this in the manual. if any questions, post on this board. oh, i got the hinges off of ebay as a pair, from a company in california for 24.95 with free shipping. very fast shipping and the hinges work great, maybe slightly more pressure to open and close, but no big deal.
February 27th, 2009 at 5:34 am
Bought my HPdv5000 from Best Buy in March 2006 and the hinge on the RIGHT side broke suddenly Feb. 2009 causing the screen to buckle away from the frame if I try to close it. I have to carry it OPEN everywhere I go. It cannot be closed or the screen will pop away from the frame !
February 27th, 2009 at 10:59 am
I too had the same issue happen to the right side of the computer hinge. Purchased the unit also in 2006 and it broke recently (Jan 2009). I called HP after finding this blog and I reached a technician in the “Philippines” who stated there is no recall for this problem. I stated the blogs I’ve seen on the internet are contrary to what the facts are and he stated the product is out of warranty and offered to charge me $298 to have HP fix it. So much for being loyal to HP for all these years. I’m going to buy an APPLE computer and get rid of all the HP product I now have. What lousy customer service!!
March 3rd, 2009 at 5:01 pm
wow. I have had the exact same problems as you guys/gals. 3 yr old zv5000. the left cracked then the right. now it won’t stay open on its own. this is ridiculous. other than that I’ve had no problems with this thing.
March 8th, 2009 at 10:46 am
why me? i never did anything to hp, i thought they were good, the guy at best buy said “This best computer we have for a college student would be a “HP PAVILION DV5000″ for 1099 dollars. i looked at it, said ok. brang it home, tried to watch a movie on it. nothin. i take it back the next day, and they said oh the video card is messed up it’ll cost 129 dollars to fix though. i say ok. THEN a week later, the sound goes bye bye. i take it back and say “YOU KNOW WHAT, JUST GIVE ME ANOTHER COMPUTER.” they look at it and say “GEE, ITS ONLY THE SOUND CARD, I’LL FIX IT FOR 200 EVEN?” after hard thought i finally said yes.
Then 1 year later the hinges snap, both of em, i go there and they say, your warrenty expired last week, so it’ll cost about… 689 dollars? i said no and bought a dell.
THE MORAL OF THIS STORY?: HP SUCKS, BUY DELL
March 10th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
hp pavilion zv5000
both hinges broke…got tired of propping up and purchased new laptop. just found the repair hinges on ebay for under 30. gonna fix and sell or give to my daughter
whole thing is pretty disturbing considering the number of people with the problem here. HP should be ashamed!
March 23rd, 2009 at 8:19 am
HP DV5000
Same deal as everyone else. Left hinge broke and now I can’t open or close my laptop. It’s stuck. If I try to move it, the bezel and screen start prying off. The bezel is snapped in half. I bought $75 worth of replacement parts on ebay and will try to fix it when I get the time. I bought a dell at the same time and it is still working perfect. Wish I would have bought 2 dells. The HP has been junky in other respects as well. The left mouse button doesn’t work and the speaker paint rubbed off.
March 25th, 2009 at 10:34 am
DV5000, 4+ yrs old
Both hinges have separated and the screen just flops but no binding problem… yet. Hubby ordered parts and will attempt to fix the problem himself. He successfully repaired the display last year when the screen went black. Also, the usb port on the right side is loose and has been for the past 2 years. By lose, I mean that the connection intermittently fails for no known reason. I just don’t use it but being right handed, I’d like to plug in my mouse on that port…
April 2nd, 2009 at 11:33 pm
After 3 years my right hinge has snapped apart as well as the screen that holds the hinge to the back plastic panel. This has happened because the right hinge no longer moves unless I put a large amount of force on it. So not only do I have to get new hinges, but a back panel as well.
April 5th, 2009 at 10:48 am
HP zv5430us it has been a great laptop for me but the screen started going whacky white lines and dashes all over the screen. The laptop is out of warranty of course. I opened up the bezel and the button cover. The left hinge is cracked in two. I had noticed it was loose to open and close but just thought it was wear and tear. I have found the hinges on ebay for a reasonable amount and will order a pair and new LCD. But I wonder if the cracked hinge caused my LCD failure. Can anyone give me the HP info for the free fix? Thanks.
April 12th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
Same problem. Was working at 4-hour shift, went to close the laptop and the left hinge broke. Now I cannot shut the laptop. Any suggestions as to how to fix it? It is no longer portable.
May 3rd, 2009 at 10:35 am
HP zv5000 — same problem, but I think I’ve also got a dead fan causing the system to overheat and operate at a slow crawl…
I see lots of people recommending Dell over HP. Make no mistake, Dell can be just as bad to work with as HP, or any other manufacturer for that matter (Sony, Apple, etc). Given ample opportunity, eventually they will all piss you off, and they all have committed some bad engineering blunders to save a penny.
Keep track of your warranties on all expensive gear and report all problems within the warranty. Consider extended warranties, check with your credit card company for options.
Cheers.

HP dv5000
Same problem listed above. After approximately 3 years, the left hinge broke. HP has offered free repairs to the dv9000 models that suffered from this EXACT problem. If you notice, the left hinge is located right above the fan and they believe the heat has created the problem.
I contacted HP concerning the left hinge break and mentioned this website as well as this same defect happening in the other model. They gave me the run-around and said that they hadn’t received many complaints on the dv5000.
I encourage you ALL to call HP and complain so they may fix this issue!
June 5th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
I just found this site while looking for a replacement frame for my laptop. I also have the dv5000 series which I’ve owned for 2 years and the left hinge separated and broke causing my whole frame to break. I’m having trouble finding a replacement and my contract did not cover this damage.
June 30th, 2009 at 6:07 am
Mine hinges haven’t yet cracked. But I do get the little shocks on my wrists as I type. Still under the service plan (2 years, and they added a year for troubles)… but I just don’t have the three hours necessary for calling into HP to get this resolved. Every service call I make has taken anywhere from 2-4 hours and in the end they are always trying to push me to buy a new computer.
July 2nd, 2009 at 1:37 pm

I bought my v5000 from Walmart in Nov. 2006. Cracked a few weeks ago. Submitted to Wal-Mart they refuse to fix due to so call water damage. I clean my screen with Windex and they are using this as an excuse not to fix it when the water damage has nothing to do with the hinge being broken.

I forgot to say I did contact HP and they would do nothing about the hinge issues.
July 9th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
yeah same issue - and i’m LIVE with HP chat support and referred them to this forum. GET THIS! They just told me ‘THERE IS NO KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE DV5000 SERIES HINGES” I told them ROFL you have to be friggin’ kidding me! Tech responded that there IS a replacement hinge for the dv9000. The Corporation Denies our problem exists!

Yeah had a dv9500 for 2 years and the frame right next to the security hole thing cracked and now I cant close my screen. I called the support line and they said that they are in no way responsible and want to charge me $298 for the repair. This is ridiculous, I told them that it cracked and they automatically told me that it does not crack on its own and that I dropped it. And yet they seemed to know exactly which side it cracked on and its exact location without me telling them, which is curious to me if it was not a common problem like they said.

My DV5000 left hing has done the same thing, it hasn’t broken yet but it has become hard enough to close that it is causing the bezel to flex and separate. My warranty ran out in April. It looks like this is worth a class action suit.

My Grandson’s ZV5000 has both hinges broke. I am ordering them from China for about $20.00. Does any one have a manual or write up on how to install them.
The battery charger also went dead and I had to buy a new one. He is very unhappy with HP and going to get a Apple next.

Long story short by a Dell, LG. Quality comes with those names, I have 5 year old dell laptop and it still runs like its new. Fresh install maybe twice over the last 5 years.
my 2 cents but I use to buy/used HP, Toshiba, and Acer but there dropping the ball on there quality…
Acer’s not bad but there darn software I wish they would just give that up already!!
I purchase between 50 to 75 laptops a year so I test a lot of brands out there. The big 3 have a hate on Dell but there’s a reason for it… Go Dell!!
August 17th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
Purchased a little over a year ago. Warranty expired July 29th 2009. It is August 17th 2009. Both hinges broke off. Just from opening the laptop like normal.

I have a Compaq V5000 with a broken left hinge. Anyone know where I can get a replacement?
Thanks

The left hinge on our dv5000 broke after about 3 years. It was the left hinge. We ordered a new one from http://battery-adapter.com
It took about a hour to find all the screws and snaps. It really wasn’t that bad. The replacement hinges were cheaper than other sites, but they took over two weeks. It was definitely pain having to wait that long. The screen stayed open, but it wasn’t easy to close so my wife couldn’t take it easily.
The replacement hinges looked to be original replacements, which was nice to see. Now that I’ve been able to see the broken hinge, its pretty clear why it breaks and almost always the left one. There a slot right in the thinnest section of the part that screws to the base of the laptop. To make things worse, there’s a sharp inside corner that concentrates all the stress from opening and closing. Definitely a design flaw that should be pretty easy to fix with a fillet. The right side seems to be more robust. Anyway, I’m expecting another two years with the new hinge.

Left hinge snapped on my dv5000 after 3 years. Laptop was unable to close. I had to remove the pieces with pliers.
Don’t try updating the BIOS on these machines either. It crashes all the time. In the middle of a BIOS update it crashed. Only way to fix it was to get a new mother board. 350$ to HP to fix it.

I have a dv5000 paid $1100 3 years ago for it and now it is being held together with duct tape!!!!! Hard drive failed in the first year and now both hinges are broken …..No More HP for me!

well, some of the posts on this page would lead you to believe that HP is accepting responsibility for this product design flaw. However, I just spent the last week trying the methods detailed in this discussion in order to get HP to repair my dv5000 series for a reduced cost. They were complete jerkwads about it and said no repeatedly. I insisted on speaking to a case manager and even he stubbornly insisted that there was no longer a service directive on these hinge problems, particularly as the DV 5000 series was not even covered according to him. I told him that his statements and refusal to aid in the repair of this endemic problem has permanently lost them a customer and finally hung up after hours on the phone trying to get them to see the error. They seem to be idiots.

Thanks for providing this site. My HP Pavilion dv5000 suffered a broken left hinge recently, due to wear and tear. I found replacing the hinge a pretty simple procedure.
First I downloaded the HP maintenance manual for the computer (not to be confused with the owners’ manual). This PDF document is available at the HP site. See Section 5.14 of the PDF for details on removing the display assembly.
Next, I ordered a hinge replacement kit on eBay for about $30 (inc. shipping). It’s HP spare part number 407796-001. HP also sells it, but they charge about $80.
Once the kit arrived, I simply followed the manual’s step by step instructions, though I found it was not necessary to do everything they suggested. There is really no need to open the memory module cover and disconnect the antenna cables, nor did I find it necessary to remove the keyboard frame and keyboard, nor did I have to disconnect the display cable and wireless antenna cables that run beneath the keyboard or the cables that run beneath the switch cover.
Really, all I had to do was take off the switch cover, the bezel, and of course the hinges themselves, and then put it all back together with new hinges. (Naturally, before you begin, the computer must be shut down and removed from AC power, with the battery taken out.)
Most of it is common sense, really. Took about an hour to do the job. I ended up replacing both hinges, because the right hinge was bent (it probably became deformed because the damage to the left hinge created unnatural pressure on the right side). The cover opens and closes easily now.
I do have two screws left over, which worries me a bit! Even so, the machine is good to go — hopefully for another couple of years.

This is completely engineering/design problem because, I have dv5000 and my hinges also gone and when I examined the hinges I realized that hinges failed due to fatigue (continues cyclic loading). This means that hp engineer’s especially designed that hinges to fail after warranty period which is commonly two years.

I epoxied 2 metal 2 1/2 inch hinges to the back edge of my compaq presario v5000 and removed the broken hinge pin stub completely.
Actually I used J-B weld rather than clear epoxy. Looks funky but works great.

Amazed by the number of hinge failures. Our zv5000 has also joined the broken hinge group. Thanks to all these comments, I will attempt the repairs myself while also looking for a new laptop - BUT NOT FROM HP!
After reading all these comments, why would anyone ever consider HP products!

Purchased from Walmart in November 2006. HP Compaq Presario V5000.
Hinge on left side of screen froze and broke free of its plastic casing. Was not dropped or abused in any way, unless opening and closing the laptop constitutes abuse! It’s always transported in a heavily padded laptop carrying case, which is in perfect shape and never banged around.
The other hinge appears to be holding, at least so far, but the extra stress on the one remaining hinge does not bode well for that side of the screen. Since wires from the unit base to the screen run through the left hinge, I now fear operational complications–in addition to the obvious problem of the screen having to be propped up in order to use the computer.
Hope to hear of a solution soon.

PS to my message above (#91):
I tried the www.laptopmaven.com site recommended by pinny (#84) and searched their hinge section–no HP hinges available.
Also tried the battery-adapter.com site recommended by Joe (#81) and they have the hinges for $50, plus $25 for the hinge covers, but warranty is only 3 mos.
RE Sam (#59) and Shamo (#53) experiences with Best Buy …
AVOID THE GEEK SQUAD AT ALL COST! I made the mistake of taking my previous laptop there and they shipped it to CA for repair, then told me it couldn’t be repaired (and charged me for that analysis). I said to just give it back to me. They said they couldn’t return it to me because it would be a waste of expense since it couldn’t be repaired. WHAT?? I kept after them, all the way to corporate, and eventually got the machine back MINUS the power cord with surge protector that had gone with it. After more battles, I finally got those replaced. But it became clear along the way that their intent was to keep all my stuff to cannibalize for repairing others machines–or to repair it cheap and sell it as a rehabbed machine for a lot more than they could charge me for the repair.
Since repair costs are very nearly as much as I paid for my laptop … except that I then upgraded it, so it’s actually a more valuable working unit, it doesn’t make sense to pay or repairs–though the machine still functions great, other than the hinge issue. Based on the posts RE fan and display issues subsequent to the broken left hinges, and the fact that replacing the hinges with a same-style replacement merely postpones the problem until that one breaks, too, I’m thinking …
Larry (#90) probably has the best idea. Think I’ll get a couple of sturdy steel hinges at the hardware story and epoxy them to my machine. At least, if the hinge break leads to additional problems, I wont have another chunk of money going down he drain on the hinges

Bought a Pavilion DV5 14 months ago and the display hinges are now a single unit and both sides have failed so basically the two halves are held together with the wiring! Not only do the hinges snap but it also pulls them off the display cover so that need replacing too.
Had numerous calls with HP being passed around and being cut off and eventually got through the the 30 people strong complaints team. I got the text book answer of not a “known issue” so we won’t pay for the repair. They sometimes accept repairs within 14 days of the end of the warranty period but that is it.
Apparently they don’t accept there is a problem until enough of us have logged these hinge failures with them by calling HP direct that they start believing us. Don’t know how many compliants they need before they believe us but make sure you call!
Clearly HP have no idea what customer service is!

My zv5000 got the same problem. I used it very carefully, appearently it is material design defects. I bought it in 2005 with $850. Don’t know who I can blame to. Neither HP nor Dell, so who I can trust.

DV5215US, purchased November 2006. Pretty much the same experience as everyone else - the left hinge broke after several years. It seems to be getting harder to open/close so I guess it’s time to do the repair.
Haven’t been terribly impressed with the product. HDD failed about 1 month in after purchase. I understand HDs fail, all hardware has some failure rate and if it’s going to fail it will probably be early-on. HP wanted me to wait 1 - 2 months for the HD to be restocked into inventory and gave me the run around (Indian tech support). They finally gave me a Westerner who purchased a drive on the open market and had it drop shipped to me.
We had similar problems with an HP 3300 series All-in-one printer. Finally got the issues resolved but it took forever on both pieces of hardware.
It seems HP has taken the tact to wear the customer down and replace the minimum of what they have to, even if it is under warranty and defective.

Hi, i have a Hp pav ZV5456e, bought april 2005, same problem ,last year the left hinge failed, tonight the other side went , my screen just fell back ,no support anymore, resulting in a crack in the housing round the hinge, the opp side as signs of stress on the housing in the same place, which av just developed tonight , id assumed the first hinge was wear and tear, and as the laptop was out of warrenty thought that was that, i came on line tonight to google the prob, and hopefully find some info on fixing it, didnt expect to find so many people in the same boat, phew.

Hi
I have a zv5000 with a good Display, hinges work fine and if someone is local to New Hampshire I will give it to you and or install it. I’m not sure how to make contact though

Just fixed mine, too bad hp could not give us a free repair. I bought the two hinges on ebay from a new york seller and everything works fine. One thing though, now when i open and close the lid it is a little tough, not complaining though, maybe i am not used to it since the first hinge broke a year ago and the second one gave in 2 months ago

f dat then i was just about to buy new hinge when i was purchasing hard drive but now i think i am going to give hp a call.

First things first..I was totally surprised to find a website dedicated for broken laptop hinges!!! that said..thanks for the site where I got to read the experiences of other HP users.
My laptop is DV5000 series pavilion. 4 years old and a couple of days. Today morning I felt that something was wrong with the way my laptop’s lcd display was moving. It took a while for me figure out that it was the left hinge that cracked and was the culprit. What a shame that HP and ist associate service centres are just a bunch of thugs trying to rob customers.
When I went to the authorized service centre @ Hyderabad, I got the shock of my life that HP does not replace the hinges alone..so I was suggested to get the whole LCD replaced!! which would cost me about 15000 Rs or more. I came back home disappointed and did a search on google and that was how I bumped into this site. Thanks Joe (post # 81) for the site. I am planing to order the hinges and get the old ones replaced.
This is the last time I would ever recommend HP to anybody!!

Well, my dv5223om just experienced a left hinge failure. Only thing available on line so far that I can see are used ones from Ebay. Should I take a chance?
