HP Model dv2000 notebook hinge crack
By admin | August 21, 2008
A few people have started to post about their experience with the HP Pavillion dv2000 notebook hinge cracking. I have no experience with this model, but have decided to create this post so others can post their experiences.
Please reply to this post with when you bought your notebook, how long it took to crack, and any specific details about the damage. If you’ve contacted HP, post those details here, but only if you’re using the dv2000 model.

HP zv6000, purchased 4-05 from Costco online. Left hinge broke 2-08, right hinge broke 8-08, HP won’t repair because it is out of warranty.
Question: Does this hinge problem apply to the current HP models such as dv9700t, or did they change the hinge design? Thanks in advance.

my dv9000 also cracked on lower left side. I got it from circuit ciy nov 06.

dv2000t left hinge broke 6/08 - and since then the internal wirless card stopped working…possibly a direct result??? my frame is cracked and broken on the left side where the hinge is??? HELP!!

hey Scott i have the exact model and problem as you, except my wireless still works. if you go to hp.com you can download a maintenance and service guide pdf. pay close attention to the 5.12 display assembly section, as it gives you part numbers for the hinges, plastic frame and wireless parts. you can type in on Google in order to buy and replace them yourself. I disassembled my laptop following their instructions, identified my broken parts, and ordered replacements online that way. hopefully everything will go smoothly when they arrive in the mail. best of luck!
September 20th, 2008 at 3:30 am
actually i looked more into it and all you need to really guarantee you have everything are the hinges from ebay (around 15) and the 430471-001 - HP Pavilion dv2000 Series Laptop LCD Display Panel Plastics Kit for the full featured dv2000’s and 417100-001 - HP Pavilion dv2000 Series Laptop LCD Display Panel Plastics Kit for the basic ones. refer to the dv2000 hp maintenance and service guide you get on the hp website for installation instructions.
September 20th, 2008 at 3:32 am
that fixes the hinges and plastic but i don’t believe the wireless chord is included in all that so you may have to buy that as well
September 20th, 2008 at 3:35 am
Just to clarify, the wireless chord is not needed if your wireless card is working already.

james,
thanks for the help but i ended up calling hp and talked them into fixing my computer for free even though im out of warranty. so i sent them my computer but unfortunately it was sent to the houston repair center which was damaged heavily by hurricane ike so now my computer is stuck there!

I too have this issue. I have an HP dv2000 (dv2047cl) that i’ve had for about a year and a half and I started to hear the case popping when I open it after 8 months or so. I do my own repairs normally so I removed the LCD bezel and found that the outer screw that holds the LCD to the hinge on my left was very loose and letting the LCD flex when opened or closed which forced open the plastic shell causing the popping. I snugged it up and it worked like new for about 6 months and then the LCD frame bracket broke apart. It split clean at the corner like it was never connected. This tells me that the LCD has to much movement inside shell and that in conjuction with the heat from the vent is what is causing this to happen. The worst part is they don’t sell the LCD frame bracket at all and i can’t find a replacement.

hi i bought a dv4000 in 2005 and the left hinge cracked also. i have to wiggle the screen to make it work, i think this is a major problem with the laptops. Now the backside lower left corner of the screen has started to crack also.
October 11th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
If you have any hinge issue, call HP CASEMANGERs 1-877-917-4380 ext 08……they are all american in springfield missouri and will do it for free…..The Canadians will not do it for free

Hi guys, I have HP model # DV 2845se and my left hinge is just started to crack and i bought it in June 08. has anyone called HP on it. what do they say. i tried calling them but twice i hung up after one hour hold n hold. what is a solution to this one? i am very careful with all my things and i am totally upset with my this investment.
please let me know.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
I bought my dv2550se around June 2007, and both my hinges have broken, along with cracks on the actual lid due to strain.
November 20th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
hey, i have a 2 year old dv2000 (2036ea) laptop and the hinge cracked and the lid stopped functioning properly around 6 months after purchase - warranty covered 1 year at john lewis not direct through hp - i called hp and they said they would not cover it, after they admitted to a wireless function problem which i had to pay an seperate shop to repair as they refused to admit it was a widespread fault on the model. Even after i told them how much time and money they had wasted me they refused the goodwill gesture of repairing my laptop. The crack has led INTO the lid now and looks ridiculous. As i need to shut the lid quite hard, the actual screen has lines on it when i tilt the lid
I am very disgruntled about this as i have wasted copious amounts of time and energy and the laptop is the one i will need for uni next year as i dont have the money for a new one..
please let me know ! thank you

I have an HP dv2000 notebook bought 9/06. The lid cracked in 10/08. This flaw is common to many HP notebooks because the cracks occur at the orifice designed to receive a lock. Nice idea but the hole creates a weak point in the strength of the lid, hence the cracks.
I wrote HP asking for repair since it is such a widespread design flaw. I gave the example of my Honda being out of warranty but Honda still repaired the transmission because they admitted the problem stemmed from a design flaw.
Not surprisingly, HP refused to repair my notebook.
Not surprisingly, this is my last HP product.
Does anyone know of a source from which to purchase a replacement lid at a reasonable price?
Many thanks.

If anyone decides to self-repair, link is to a website which seems to offer great prices on HP replacement hinges.
I am going to call the HP case manager number and see if they will fix for free. Will post updates.

Check out HP’s site: they oficially released a formal note that they will repair the hinges for free:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ca&docname=c01611512
2 months ago, I’ve spent hours with tech support, and finally spoke with a case manager who wasn’t helpfull at all. i was about to order the part from ebay and get it fixed.
I received the email as well, and now, by force, they have no choice, but repair it. The best of all: it’s FREE
good works all of you guys by insisting on the issue… For those who already gave up and got it fixed at their own fees, send HP the receipt, and they will reimburse your money.
Cheers.

I have an HP Pavillion dv2000 notebook. Ireceived it as a gift last year. It was working fine lastnight but now my screen is blank. I do not know what to do. If anybody knows how to fix this, please respond…
December 11th, 2008 at 8:07 am
Soumaly,
Link is to an HP page that depicts warranty enhancements for the dv2000. Read the page to see if your computer qualifies for free repair. A blank screen is one of the symptoms described.
Good luck.

Thus far, HP is not offering to repair broken hinges on dv2000 notebooks. If you are a dv2000 owner, please email HP president Mark Hurd. Link is to an online contact form. He will delegate it to lower levels but maybe this way HP will see that the dv2000 suffers from the same hinge problem as the dv9000.

I have HP Pavilion DV2000 laptop it is excellent, easy to use. I got a hp dv2000 battery from http://www.batterygoshop.co.uk/hp/dv2000-battery.htm. The battery last 2~3 hours.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:50 am
HP DV2660SE
Bought late Dec ‘08
Crapped out (left hinge) early Feb ‘09
Why is it that only the DV6000’s are receiving the free repairs? It is a design problem and ALL the series within this generation are of the SAME DESIGN? Ugh. =/.
I still haven’t gotten up the guts to call. I hate confrontation.
February 17th, 2009 at 11:43 pm
My DV2000 hinge has been loose for months and finally one day when I closed it, the shell cracked from the hinge to the lock. I never dropped it or did anything wrong. It’s about 3 years old, and since I have no warranty, they refuse to fix THEIR DEFAULTED computer because I have no warranty. Is it not enough that i BOUGHT your product for 1200 bucks!? This is ridiculous and I have no idea what to do. I cannot close my laptop which I need for school. Anyone have any suggestions?
February 17th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
By the way, its the left hinge just like everyone elses!
March 3rd, 2009 at 8:17 pm
My DV2000 had a hinge crack after a little over 2yrs on the right side. I ordered a set of replacements for around $50, by the time it arrived the lcd bracket on the left side had broken due to the additional stress on it. So, now I need to find a replacement bracket.
March 8th, 2009 at 10:11 am
I purchased it 2 years back and this laptop didnt give me any problems at all until the day came when the left hinge cracked! i thought it was one of my mate’s fault but after reading all this i am convinced that it wasnt anyone’s fault and its actually HP’s fault! I was thinking of buying hp’s new tablet dx2050, but after knowing how helpful they are.. i think this is my last hp product!
I really think they should offer free repair to all the series as it is common in all of them! We also paid for the laptop and didnt get it for free. I m getting well pissed off on them now!
March 9th, 2009 at 6:18 am
Update: I sent a letter to Mark Hurd and it was delegated to an executive who voiced concerns over the DV2000 hinge problem. He turned it over to a case manager who made it his life’s ambition to contact me. He called three times in a two day period. But…when we talked, he did not have much to offer. He said that my letter got “attention” by the senior staff and that he would turn the problem over to a team of engineers for “evaluation”. Translation: the issue is on a dead-end street.
Apparently, HP has a short-term view of the problem created thru their own inferior engineering design. They prefer to lose customers rather than own up to the problem. I am moving on and buying a Lenovo next time.
Good luck folks. With HP you will need it.

I have a dv2171cl purchased at Costco in fall 2006… its been a great machine but plagued by the famous battery crapping out after 1 year and the hinges getting broken. First the left hinge broke (I’m guessing in mid ‘07), which I just noticed as the screen being a bit wiggly in the left corner, thought nothing of it. Then the right side of the LCD bracket snapped clean off the hinge like “11. mike” described (fall of ‘08). The screen was then being held by the plastics. When the plastic frame broke too the screen couldn’t be held upright on its own, and I noticed then, when the plastic frame came off, the left hinge was broken and the bracket had snapped off there too. I’ve noticed its pretty straight forward to replace, just take some screws off, unfortunately I haven’t found a replacement LCD bracket, now I’m considering taking it out and welding it myself.
April 13th, 2009 at 8:44 am
I also have a dv2120us notebook that I had bought around 2 and a half years ago. Started noticing the left hinge problem around 6 months ago. Finally, after trying to carefully close the lid everytime, the hinge cracked completely. Even the lcd bezel is cracked now at the side where it fits into the hinge.
I called up case manager and they did not have much to offer. The best they were willing to do was give me a $100 discount which would reduce the repair cost from $300 to $200. I guess no one in their right mind would spend $200 to get the hinge repaired when you can buy new notebooks for $400 these days.
Anyways its strange that HP’s owned up to the hinge problem on the dv9000 and not dv2000 series. Maybe if enough people complain, they would own up for the dv2000’s too. So people, if you have a hinge problem make sure to call up the case manager or fill up the contact form to HP president Mark Hurd here -

I bought my Dv2000 in on august 1 2008 my hinge was loose from the first time i sent my computer in for a repair. The repair was to fix the screen which kept on going purple and ever since i got the repair done the hinge was loose, and now its sheel eventually broke. I am soo frustrated because they refuse to fix it. I swear i did not drop it or anything and now the broken hinge is giving me alot of trouble. Please keep me updated on what i can do.

I’ve had SOOO many problems with HP, but I love the design and affordability of the computers. I purchased my DV2900 in July 08. In less than a year, the battery had gone bad, hard drive had failed and the charger was beginning to fray. Around May 09, I noticed that the left hinge was beginning to buckle and crack. I called HP, complained to high heaven and finally sent it in June 16, 2009. I’m looking at the customer service order and it is saying that the hinge problem is “Beyond Economic Repair”. [basically, it will cost more for them to fix it than to just replace the laptop]. Right now, its saying that I owe a little over $1000 for the repair but i am SURE that is a mistAKE seeing as though the notebook is still under manufacturer warranty. Will return with updated result.

Purchased dv2000 notebook 12/07; cracked over left hinge 11/08. Microcenter where we purchased extended warranty claimed we dropped it; HP over phone told us same. Hinge continued to crack all the way across. Had to bandage with masking tape. Saw this website last month and realized I was not crazy. Called HP repair and talked nicely with rep who said there was nothing they could do; asked nicely to speak with his manager and explained it was embarrasing to take a taped up HP notebook to meetings. He offered to repair for $60. This was $300 under the prices quoted by HP and Microcenter (plus $50 to ship by latter) in November. Box arrived next day and it was shipped at no cost to me. Thanks to this site for your help. I made a donation as a thank you.
June 20th, 2009 at 6:29 am
@Krysten
Wow… A thousand bucks!? That’s insane… I love the design and affordability of HP computers too… But I think that dv2171cl I purchased in ‘07 is the LAST product from HP I’ll ever buy.
Good luck with those repairs!

Thanks to all for your stories. Suddenly I know I’m not alone. Our HP dv2000 gave way on the right. We put it down to the number of times it had been dropped (nine year old, who ALWAYs tries to carry too much)
Anyway he just got his shiny new DELL, so I’m determined to fix the HP with a bit of good old Kiwi ingenuity! I’ll take some pics, and I’ll be back to post up the results.
cheers

This is the second time that the hinge has broken on my daughters DV2000 since purchase in 05. It cost me over $300. to have it repaired last year and it took over a month to get it back. I just got off the phone with a case manager in Canada and he told me that he could make a deal with me to have it repaired for $150. That was after I suggested starting a class action law suit against HP. Even though I don’t think I should have to pay a dime to fix this laptop.
One of the problems with HP is that when you call the 800 number you end up talking to someone in India or South America, but you never get anyone in the US where your computer is being repaired. What good is that?
If you have a problem, inundate the corporate headquarters with e-mails. I sent my to the CEO of the company. They are located in California. Maybe it will help. I don’t have the address handy now, but if you look on the website you will be able to get it.
September 4th, 2009 at 6:35 am
There is a site for a class action against the DV9000. I have both and both are junk. I gave the law firm my DV 9000 info. I actually had the MB replaced, but it only lasted 2 months, and they will not put a new one in. I can’t find the class action suite, but will continue to look. If anyone finds it they might also take up the DV2000 cause. Post it here!

Hey I have a dv2000 purchased in Aug 2006. I’ve had so many problems with it. I remember the first time I turned it on the screen froze and displayed that blue screen. Then around Christmas 07 the charger frayed at the top and stopped working. I bought upgraded the original 6 cell battery to a 12 cell which is supposed to last 6 hrs. Gradually the battery has died and I’d say that happened Oct 08. Also, as everyone has mentioned, the left hinge cracked. I noticed this small crack back i Nov or Dec 08. It has since gotten worse, to the point that it scares me everytime I close my computer. Oh yeah, can’t forget the hardrive is failing too, meaning this computer could die any day now. It has been 3 years, but still.
How can I replace this hinge, I’ve heard it costs close to $500 to replace. It doesn’t seem worth it.

My brother and I both bought dv2810us notebooks at the same time about a year ago. BOTH of us have had the left hinge come loose:
He sent his in while UNDER WARRANTY, and they refused to repair the problem; citing careless use! Upon disassembly, it turns out his aluminum LCD bracket had basically torn from within, and the inset nuts behind the screen have come out.
I did not send mine in. My screen has become so loose that the microphone no longer works, and the screen flickers every time the notebook is opened. Upon disassembly, I found that all the screws on the left side were loose. Tightening the screws that hold the screen bracket to the top reactivated the microphone, and tightening the outer screws that hold the front plate to the top eliminated looseness in the hinge….for now.
Although I was able to make a (likely very temporary) pseudo-repair on mine, my brother’s notebook is shot, and will likely require a risky and fairly intensive rigged repair job in order to become practically functional.
I am dismayed that HP would release a product that is obviously faulty, and then refuse to account for their mistake. I am disgusted that HP would blame the consumer for a problem that–as we can see above–is plaguing the masses.
WAKE UP HP!

i have an hp pavilion dv2941se and the left hinge cracked. and about 6 weeks before the screen cracked, the fan started grinding. the unit still has about 6 months under warranty and i sent it in to hp. they said the fan was grinding because of the screen crack and wanted 300 bucks to fix the computer. they said it was not covered under warranty.

Argh so today I woke up opened up my monitor to use my dv2000 notebook and boom heard a crack on my left hinge its all cracked there pieces came out of it. I was surprised because I have never dropped or bumped this notebook seems as if the hinge is stuck on one position and the monitor just kept going breaking itself. Any new information about how to get this fixed for free? I will call my warranty to see if I can get it fixed….oh wait I bought this from circuit city

DV 2500 14″ screen purchased in 2008 has a cracked and broken left hinge already..
October 22nd, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Dv 2500 14 inch screen also purchased in 2008. The latch to release the battery broke off, i can no longer remove the battery. The left hinge and right hinge broke at the same time on the LCD bracket.
Not only that the laptop broke but i cannot remove the battery to remove the screws behind it. So i cannot repair the laptop at all.
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:51 pm
I have the DV2000. I have been enjoying it more then any other computer I have ever had. Only one problem.. a year goes by of gentle care and use (because I love this machine) and a month or so later the left hinge cracks.. iv been dealing with it for so long and it just keep getting worse. HP will replace mine free. I just need to figure out the right way to go about it! We all do.
I paid a grand for a great experience.. not a 1 year experience.
If they would just fix this small mistake for me I would buy many more HP’s.. in fact i want the HP Mini 1000 for my car and work when I travel.. but I refuse until this DV2000 is repaired on them.
November 10th, 2009 at 11:14 am
My friend and I both purchased similar hp dv2000 (2718us) models about two years ago. We notice in about a month (after talking to one another) that the hinge allowed our laptops to “play” about an 1.5″-2″. I tend to leave my computer at home so it does not see as many cycles of open close as his, but within the year of his purchase his screen stopped functioning. It was not until the tech at Best Buy tightened his hinged that it returned to normal.
I however am still stuck with my wobble laptop and it is now out of warranty. Anyone have any idea what might be going on with this?
Also has anyone else had the following issues; battery charging indicator freezes, all programs but windows media player cannot detect my dvd burner drive, extremely crappy video function (it crashes within a minute).
Thanks and good luck to all.

Bought dv2500 in May of 2008, in November of 2009 the hinge on left side cracked. Called HP, had the case escalated to executive case manager, and he said the best he could do was knock off $100 from the repair cost and repair it for $300. I offered to pay the cost of the parts if they would absorb the labor cost. He turned me down.
Now I will not rest untill they fix my laptop. I am waiting for the executive case mngr to call me back tomorrow. If I don’t hear from him by 5 pm Tuesday December 8th, 2009 all hell’s going to break loose.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:57 am
hey this is crazy how many people have encountered my problem. i was given a hp pavillion dv 2000 by my grandmother so i could use it for college.my laptop couldnt connect to the internet after 1month,so it just stayed under my bed for a while. then finally i got it fixed not by hp. it worked for six months then it happen again so it cost another eightyfive bucks to fix.my last straw was when i came from work and my left hinge was broken and the laptop was stuck couldnt open. i was pisses and swore my sister or someone dropped it.i know see the people who droped it were hp. they definetly drop the ball and wont man up and fix the problems.im now argueing on the phone with them they say im out of warranty so im waiting for a superviser . ill update what happens.

HP dv2000se
Purchased Aug ‘08
Began seeing problems within 6 months of purchase
Broken completely by Aug ‘09
The entire left side is snapped in half. The screen hangs on by the plastic on the right side. Now that I have read these, I will never again buy an HP product. I’m not paying $300 for what seems to be, a shitty repair job.
I called about a week before the warranty ended to see what they could do, and they said I should just buy another service plan and then send it in. It was some Indian guy who really had no sense of time either. He called back many times past midnight.
I really need a laptop for school. I’m just going to get what else I can out of this POS, and then pick up a smaller Lenovo. I’ve heard great things about them.

Dear brothers i have hp pavilion dv2000 left hinge is broke let me know where i broght it?
January 28th, 2010 at 3:11 pm
Just got off the phone with HP tech support and no help. He did try to sell me an extended warranty that would not honor the cracked hinge issue. All I wanted was a part #.
I have a dv2941 en 14.1″ the hinge is not broken it is the metal LCD display bracket that connects to the hinge. If anyone knows this part # or where to get one, many thanks. Its an easy fix once I have that.
It’s not 455845-001 or 455817-0001

I have two HP laptops. The DV8113 & 2313cl. Both of them have broken hinges. The 8113 has both hinges broken and the LCD screen cracking. This was under warranty, but HP wouldn’t honor the warranty. The instead refunded the warranty purchase price instead. The 2313 I bought for my daughter in 2007. It’s hinges are now breaking as well. People need to just not buy products from HP. Obviously these are flaws in the manufacturing of a lot of their models.

i have a hp pavillion dv2000, and i got it during my first year of university. Have been experiencing numerous problems with my hp, many within the first year that i had it . 1) battery life lasts for 2 mins (literally) 2) my adapter broke TWICE 3) the fan doesnt work properly and my computer constantly overheats 4) the hinge on my laptop has been loose for a long time and today the whole right side of the monitor just snapped and i almost couldnt get it to open. Im currently in my 3rd year and havent even had this piece of junk for 2 whole years yet. NEVER BUYING AN HP COMPUTER AGAIN !
May 23rd, 2010 at 3:07 am
i have a pavilion dv2000
bought june `07
last year fan started to run very loudly for a couple months then died out. laptop is burning hot now. cant even sit it on my lap. i have to sit it on a box in order for it not to shut down repeatedly due to the over heating. earlier this year, plastic cracked on the left side next to the lock symbol. couldnt open it without it cracking & breaking apart from the screen. had to hold the corners together while opening & closing slowly. well i guess that didnt really help cause the screen is cracked all the way up the left side & down across the bottom to the right corner & a big crack on the back of the lid on the left side. so now i have it taped up going all the way around the screen just so it wont come off completely.
$999 waste of money. i love how HP runs, looks & it setup but i dont think il be buying another HP product again since this is even happening to newer models
smh

I’m not sure if this website is still active but it’s worth a try. I bought my HP dv2910 back in August of 08 in Staples and had a hunch to buy the warranty for two years. Around December of 09 I noticed that my screen started to fade when placed at certain angles so I checked online with Staples and they said to just apply slight pressure, which I kept doing for a couple of months thinking it had been my fault. It wasn’t until April of this year that my friend who works with computers told me that it wasn’t my fault as the left hinge was cracked and that HP was responsible for that. I took it back to the Staples store and while I was telling the tech that on the website I had been told to apply pressure to the screen and he proceeded to do so the screen cracked. He told me to just call the warranty and that they would ship me a box so I could send it in. I did and a couple of days later the box returned with my laptop just the way I had sent it and with a paper that said they REFUSED to repair it. And all of this happened within the guarantee period. It has been a week since they informed me of their decision and I don’t know whether to take this up with the company of the warranty (called Blue Raven Tech.) or with HP itself.
