HP Model dv8000 hinge crack
By admin | August 8, 2008
A few people have started to post about their experience with the HP Pavillion dv8000 notebook hinge cracking. I have no experience with this model, but have decided to create this post so others can post their experiences.
Please reply to this post with when you bought your notebook, how long it took to crack, and any specific details about the damage. If you’ve contacted HP, post those details here, but only if you’re using the dv8000 model.

I purchased my dv8000 about two years ago. A couple weeks ago I noticed that the left hinge had some “play” in it, and made a grinding noise when I opened and closed it. Then, a couple days ago, when I closed it, the hinge broke inside which caused the lower left corner of the screen to split apart. I managed to get everything stuck back in and to pop the screen back together, but now I can’t close the notebook.
I cannot send it in to HP, as I use it daily for business and home computing and there is way too much info on it to try to transfer it to another computer.

I have a similar problem with my dv8000. I figured out, no matter how you look at it, that the best thing to do is to buy a new laptop (not HP) and transfer the files to it. Most likely you will be able to buy a new one for less than you paid for your dv8000 with a bigger hard drive and more features.

Same problem both hinges cracked! Monitor would scroll and after taking it apart (not easy) saw the damaged parts. I need a new lid and both hinges to fix it @ a cost of about $135 plus MY LABOR. Right now I am trying to decide if it would be money well spent. At the moment I am using a 22″ LG monitor and it works OK. Not too portable though. Definitely a design flaw with the cheap cast metal hinges-it was never an easy notebook to open-maybe other 17″ have the same problem. Good luck to you if it hasn’t happened to yours YET!

I started noticing a couple months ago that something was wrong with the left hinge of my laptop, as the casing around the hinge and monitor began bowing and in some cases snapped apart. Then, last week, I attempted to close it and the frame around the screen bent out. I opened it up to find out the hinge had snapped in half, even destroying one of the screws holding it in place, as well as part of the frame. Now it can’t close, or really move at all for that matter. It still works fine, but I can’t take it anywhere now.

I have a dv8000, and I love it!
I have taken this machine apart several times for modifications and repairs, and when the LCD started to feel flimsy, I just assumed the mounting bracket was loose. I recently took the machine apart to find nothing loose, other than the hinge (internally). Long story short, here I am.. probably over 3 years since date of purchase, and completely SOL. What makes it worse, is that HP is obviously aware of the issue. This is something a reputable company should honor as a defect. I will be rolling up my sleeves later this week and trying to battle with them. Wish me luck!

I work with HP & THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. It is now covered by the manufacturers guarantee

So will they fix it for free if I have had the laptop for a while, like 2 years?

HP Pavilion dv800 left side hinge cracked, bezel separated.
Bought at Best Buy Feb 2005, crack started 2007.
In September, HP said that only the 9000 had the problem, and so they wouldn’t support my 8000 out of warranty. Nice fellow agreed to send me “the part you need” which turned out to be a “switch cover” that isn’t part of the problem at all. Thanks to SECRET above, I’ll try again.

My Letter to HP CEO HURD, Nov 17, 2008
RESULT: HP CSR called to say that the left hinge is only a problem on the 9000s, and they won’t support the 8000s.

Dear Mr. Hurd,
I’ve always relied on HP laptops, but perhaps you’ve made a change that has degraded the products and support. This is a problem I hope you’ll fix, because I’ve been a really loyal HP fan since the 1970s, and need to know you’re still the great company you used to be.
Tech Support Chat is a wonderful service. Unfortunately, I need to elevate an engineering problem that Tech Support says “is not a known issue.” Your customers know about it, Mr. Hurd, so I hope to let you know about it, too.
My Pavilion dv8000 left hinge cracked so badly the machine won’t close anymore. Your support people acknowledged the problem on the dv9000 models, but have previously refused to repair an out-of-warranty dv8000.
According to numerous disgruntled HP users who have been running websites and forums totally devoted to this problem (see www.notebookhingecrack.com forum.notebookreview.com and repair4laptop.org), HP’s support people have lately been given mixed answers to this problem. Some dv9000 users are getting success, as are a few dv6000 users, but dv8000 users are still complaining on CraigList and eBay that the “Left Hinge Problem” is still unrecognized by HP on the dv8000s.
In fact, I spoke at length with HP support in September, and the case manager told me that the problem is “not in the database” for the dv8000, and so HP would not support it.
Rubbish. These machines overheat and break. In fact, my son’s brand new Pavilion intermittently shuts down due to overheat. This is a design flaw, and I’m sorely tempted to take my loyalty elsewhere if HP doesn’t fix this now. I can’t recommend HP products unless I can recommend HP support.
Please send a FedEx box to expedite this repair. I’m really desperate, and really hoping HP can come through with a super level of support.

Two years ago at Christmas, I purchased a DV8309US for my ife. She loved it! A few months ago, I noticed that the left hinge joint had begun to open up slightly and was not as tight as the right. Then I noticed a little later that when you close the laptop, the screen is no longer going down close enough to the keyboard to shut-down the processor. Within the last two weeks, the DC power port has begun to fail - you now have to position the power cord carefully when you plug it in to get the machine to run on the power supply, as opposed to the battery.
I called HP this morning and they wanted $298 to replace the top cover (which would take care of the hinge problem) and $398 to replace the motherboard (to correct the power port problem). If I combined the repairs, they would refurbish the entire machine to like new condition for $398 plus tax. So now I have to decide whether or not to:
1) attempt to repair it myself
2) sink $425 into repairing this one
3) buy a new laptop
Has anyone had success with pressuring HP for a free hinge repair? Anyone had the power port problem as well?
I believe that the poor case design has lead to both problems (hinge and power port broken at MB connection).

I purchased the dv8305us a little over 2 years ago for my wife. About 6 months or so ago she started complaining that the screen was very loose and wouldn’t stay put. I just shrugged it off. I finally took a look at it about 2 weeks ago. The screen wouldn’t close completely and is just flopped about. The plastic hinge cover was cracked and the plastic bezel around the screen was coming apart. I purchased a 3 year extended warranty from Fry’s, where I bought it. What a joke! Warning, never purchase any warranty from Fry’s. As you are basically just giving them your money. They said that the warranty doesn’t cover physical damage. I asked them what it does cover. The tech and his supervisor said that “Oh, if your hard drive dies or something.” Again, what a joke. Anyway, I got in touch with HP via chat. Valery wasn’t very helpful. Since my computer is past warranty they wanted $300 to fix it. I took the computer apart and both hinges are toast. Both are frozen and one snapped completely apart.
I noticed that there are two hinge parts listed depending on whether one has the single lamp display or the double. How can you tell which is which? I’m fixing the thing myself. It’s still a good computer but not worth spending $300 on.

I might have you all beat. Purchased a DV8000 (model#dv8210us) a few years ago. Screen always seemed a bit loose, but never any significant problem until the FIRST time BOTH my hinges cracked in Aug 08. Went to my local repair shop and had them replaced (approximately $100) with labor and everything was fine. UNTIL a few weeks ago when BOTH hinges cracked again. This time to the point where the screen is flopping around and will surely break off very soon. I called the nice peope at HP yesterday evening and was told they weren’t aware of any problems with this laptop and since it was out of warranty there was nothing they can do for me. Have since been doing research and I’m finding just like other posters in this forum, this is obviously a defect similar to the 9000 series, and should be addressed free of charge. After finding so many others dealing with similar problems, I will be contacting HP again for resolution.

I ordered my dv8000t on November 10, 2007 for my wife and daughter. Earlier this year there emerged some play in the monitor hinges. The right hinge (from the user’s point of view) started separating quite soon. This week the left hinge busted, a piece of it and a screw came out and the monitor assembley is begining to separate.
December 14th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
I double checked on the date. I bought the dv8000t CTO in June 2006.
HP on-line chat help told me today there’s nothing they can do. I can order the hinge repair kit and have somebody install it at my expense. Tonight I called on-line help and ended up talking to a “second line supervisor”, i.e. the help-bank floor walker. I told him I bought an HP color laser printer a month ago and have a brand new desktop in the closet for under the Christmas tree. If HP does not care to repair the structural defect on my laptop I will send the new PC back. Apparently, I’m not worth the $100 or so it would take to make me whole. For shame! The engineers decided the dv8000 does not qualify for the relief. If this is the HP business model I will not buy anything from then ever again. What is this country coming to? One World - One Nightmare!
December 14th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
I forgot to mention the HP chat help told me an “HP R & D team is working in clear out this issue.”
The “floor walker” on the phone later said that if HP puts the dv8000 on the list of eligible laptops to get the hinges repaired they would send me an e-mail. Oh, great … the screen assembly has separated today so I’m to wait for … 6 months … 24 months … for an e-mail saying send us the laptop and in 4-5 weeks you’ll get it back, fixed with the same design hinge assembly that will start breaking in 6 months?
Wouldn’t it make sense to send the kit ($49.06 price for me and probably $5 cost for HP) and a $100 coupon for HP authorized shop labor to make a loyal customer whole and buy good will?

It reminds of the Communist system: The apartment building owned by the People’s Enterprise was costly to maintain. So, two guys from the maintenance shop showed up one day and affixed a sign above each entrance to the building, proclaiming “This building is under the socialist care of its tenants.” Translation? The People’s Government Owned Enterprise is now a slum landlord and you, the tenant, are on your own. That is apparently the new business model of the global economy. Way to go HP! One World - One Nightmare!

I have had my Pavilion laptop for nearly 3 years and love it, until recently…..
Battery will not hold in place.. has anyone expereinced similar problems? I no longer can use without Electrical supply very frustrating….
December 16th, 2008 at 9:59 am
I posted this last week, but I don’t see it listed, so I’m posting again. I purchased a DV8000 (model# dv8210us) a few years ago from Best Buy. After a few months the screen became loose but was still fully functional until both hinges eventually cracked. They were FIRST replaced from a local computer repair shop in Aug 2008. The repair was successful and everything was fine until a few weeks ago when the hinges loosened and cracked again. This time the screen is ready to fall off. I googled my problem and that’s how I came across your website and the many other complaints regarding this laptop. I contacted HP a few days ago and was told since my laptop is out of warranty there is nothing they can do. After reading these comments, it is apparent this is a design flaw and that response from HP is unacceptable, no I will be contacting them again. I’m also encouraged that this site helped bring resolution to the DV9000 issues and I’m hopeful the same will be true of the DV8000 series. Thanks for listening.
