HP Model dv8000 hinge crack
By admin | August 8, 2008
A few people have started to post about their experience with the HP Pavillion dv8000 notebook hinge cracking. I have no experience with this model, but have decided to create this post so others can post their experiences.
Please reply to this post with when you bought your notebook, how long it took to crack, and any specific details about the damage. If you’ve contacted HP, post those details here, but only if you’re using the dv8000 model.

I purchased my dv8000 about two years ago. A couple weeks ago I noticed that the left hinge had some “play” in it, and made a grinding noise when I opened and closed it. Then, a couple days ago, when I closed it, the hinge broke inside which caused the lower left corner of the screen to split apart. I managed to get everything stuck back in and to pop the screen back together, but now I can’t close the notebook.
I cannot send it in to HP, as I use it daily for business and home computing and there is way too much info on it to try to transfer it to another computer.

I have a similar problem with my dv8000. I figured out, no matter how you look at it, that the best thing to do is to buy a new laptop (not HP) and transfer the files to it. Most likely you will be able to buy a new one for less than you paid for your dv8000 with a bigger hard drive and more features.

Same problem both hinges cracked! Monitor would scroll and after taking it apart (not easy) saw the damaged parts. I need a new lid and both hinges to fix it @ a cost of about $135 plus MY LABOR. Right now I am trying to decide if it would be money well spent. At the moment I am using a 22″ LG monitor and it works OK. Not too portable though. Definitely a design flaw with the cheap cast metal hinges-it was never an easy notebook to open-maybe other 17″ have the same problem. Good luck to you if it hasn’t happened to yours YET!

i acidently posted under the dv9000 area. I have the same problem with my left hindge and the machine over heads and powers off when under any cpu load.

I started noticing a couple months ago that something was wrong with the left hinge of my laptop, as the casing around the hinge and monitor began bowing and in some cases snapped apart. Then, last week, I attempted to close it and the frame around the screen bent out. I opened it up to find out the hinge had snapped in half, even destroying one of the screws holding it in place, as well as part of the frame. Now it can’t close, or really move at all for that matter. It still works fine, but I can’t take it anywhere now.

I have a dv8000, and I love it!
I have taken this machine apart several times for modifications and repairs, and when the LCD started to feel flimsy, I just assumed the mounting bracket was loose. I recently took the machine apart to find nothing loose, other than the hinge (internally). Long story short, here I am.. probably over 3 years since date of purchase, and completely SOL. What makes it worse, is that HP is obviously aware of the issue. This is something a reputable company should honor as a defect. I will be rolling up my sleeves later this week and trying to battle with them. Wish me luck!

I work with HP & THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. It is now covered by the manufacturers guarantee

So will they fix it for free if I have had the laptop for a while, like 2 years?
November 11th, 2008 at 10:01 am
HP Pavilion dv800 left side hinge cracked, bezel separated.
Bought at Best Buy Feb 2005, crack started 2007.
In September, HP said that only the 9000 had the problem, and so they wouldn’t support my 8000 out of warranty. Nice fellow agreed to send me “the part you need” which turned out to be a “switch cover” that isn’t part of the problem at all. Thanks to SECRET above, I’ll try again.

My Letter to HP CEO HURD, Nov 17, 2008
RESULT: HP CSR called to say that the left hinge is only a problem on the 9000s, and they won’t support the 8000s.

Dear Mr. Hurd,
I’ve always relied on HP laptops, but perhaps you’ve made a change that has degraded the products and support. This is a problem I hope you’ll fix, because I’ve been a really loyal HP fan since the 1970s, and need to know you’re still the great company you used to be.
Tech Support Chat is a wonderful service. Unfortunately, I need to elevate an engineering problem that Tech Support says “is not a known issue.” Your customers know about it, Mr. Hurd, so I hope to let you know about it, too.
My Pavilion dv8000 left hinge cracked so badly the machine won’t close anymore. Your support people acknowledged the problem on the dv9000 models, but have previously refused to repair an out-of-warranty dv8000.
According to numerous disgruntled HP users who have been running websites and forums totally devoted to this problem (see www.notebookhingecrack.com forum.notebookreview.com and repair4laptop.org), HP’s support people have lately been given mixed answers to this problem. Some dv9000 users are getting success, as are a few dv6000 users, but dv8000 users are still complaining on CraigList and eBay that the “Left Hinge Problem” is still unrecognized by HP on the dv8000s.
In fact, I spoke at length with HP support in September, and the case manager told me that the problem is “not in the database” for the dv8000, and so HP would not support it.
Rubbish. These machines overheat and break. In fact, my son’s brand new Pavilion intermittently shuts down due to overheat. This is a design flaw, and I’m sorely tempted to take my loyalty elsewhere if HP doesn’t fix this now. I can’t recommend HP products unless I can recommend HP support.
Please send a FedEx box to expedite this repair. I’m really desperate, and really hoping HP can come through with a super level of support.

Two years ago at Christmas, I purchased a DV8309US for my ife. She loved it! A few months ago, I noticed that the left hinge joint had begun to open up slightly and was not as tight as the right. Then I noticed a little later that when you close the laptop, the screen is no longer going down close enough to the keyboard to shut-down the processor. Within the last two weeks, the DC power port has begun to fail - you now have to position the power cord carefully when you plug it in to get the machine to run on the power supply, as opposed to the battery.
I called HP this morning and they wanted $298 to replace the top cover (which would take care of the hinge problem) and $398 to replace the motherboard (to correct the power port problem). If I combined the repairs, they would refurbish the entire machine to like new condition for $398 plus tax. So now I have to decide whether or not to:
1) attempt to repair it myself
2) sink $425 into repairing this one
3) buy a new laptop
Has anyone had success with pressuring HP for a free hinge repair? Anyone had the power port problem as well?
I believe that the poor case design has lead to both problems (hinge and power port broken at MB connection).

I purchased the dv8305us a little over 2 years ago for my wife. About 6 months or so ago she started complaining that the screen was very loose and wouldn’t stay put. I just shrugged it off. I finally took a look at it about 2 weeks ago. The screen wouldn’t close completely and is just flopped about. The plastic hinge cover was cracked and the plastic bezel around the screen was coming apart. I purchased a 3 year extended warranty from Fry’s, where I bought it. What a joke! Warning, never purchase any warranty from Fry’s. As you are basically just giving them your money. They said that the warranty doesn’t cover physical damage. I asked them what it does cover. The tech and his supervisor said that “Oh, if your hard drive dies or something.” Again, what a joke. Anyway, I got in touch with HP via chat. Valery wasn’t very helpful. Since my computer is past warranty they wanted $300 to fix it. I took the computer apart and both hinges are toast. Both are frozen and one snapped completely apart.
I noticed that there are two hinge parts listed depending on whether one has the single lamp display or the double. How can you tell which is which? I’m fixing the thing myself. It’s still a good computer but not worth spending $300 on.

I might have you all beat. Purchased a DV8000 (model#dv8210us) a few years ago. Screen always seemed a bit loose, but never any significant problem until the FIRST time BOTH my hinges cracked in Aug 08. Went to my local repair shop and had them replaced (approximately $100) with labor and everything was fine. UNTIL a few weeks ago when BOTH hinges cracked again. This time to the point where the screen is flopping around and will surely break off very soon. I called the nice peope at HP yesterday evening and was told they weren’t aware of any problems with this laptop and since it was out of warranty there was nothing they can do for me. Have since been doing research and I’m finding just like other posters in this forum, this is obviously a defect similar to the 9000 series, and should be addressed free of charge. After finding so many others dealing with similar problems, I will be contacting HP again for resolution.

I ordered my dv8000t on November 10, 2007 for my wife and daughter. Earlier this year there emerged some play in the monitor hinges. The right hinge (from the user’s point of view) started separating quite soon. This week the left hinge busted, a piece of it and a screw came out and the monitor assembley is begining to separate.
December 14th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
I double checked on the date. I bought the dv8000t CTO in June 2006.
HP on-line chat help told me today there’s nothing they can do. I can order the hinge repair kit and have somebody install it at my expense. Tonight I called on-line help and ended up talking to a “second line supervisor”, i.e. the help-bank floor walker. I told him I bought an HP color laser printer a month ago and have a brand new desktop in the closet for under the Christmas tree. If HP does not care to repair the structural defect on my laptop I will send the new PC back. Apparently, I’m not worth the $100 or so it would take to make me whole. For shame! The engineers decided the dv8000 does not qualify for the relief. If this is the HP business model I will not buy anything from then ever again. What is this country coming to? One World - One Nightmare!
December 14th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
I forgot to mention the HP chat help told me an “HP R & D team is working in clear out this issue.”
The “floor walker” on the phone later said that if HP puts the dv8000 on the list of eligible laptops to get the hinges repaired they would send me an e-mail. Oh, great … the screen assembly has separated today so I’m to wait for … 6 months … 24 months … for an e-mail saying send us the laptop and in 4-5 weeks you’ll get it back, fixed with the same design hinge assembly that will start breaking in 6 months?
Wouldn’t it make sense to send the kit ($49.06 price for me and probably $5 cost for HP) and a $100 coupon for HP authorized shop labor to make a loyal customer whole and buy good will?

There is a video of a guy repairing the hinges on his dv8000! http://video.aol.com/video-detail/hinge-fix-on-dv8000/2892570162

It reminds of the Communist system: The apartment building owned by the People’s Enterprise was costly to maintain. So, two guys from the maintenance shop showed up one day and affixed a sign above each entrance to the building, proclaiming “This building is under the socialist care of its tenants.” Translation? The People’s Government Owned Enterprise is now a slum landlord and you, the tenant, are on your own. That is apparently the new business model of the global economy. Way to go HP! One World - One Nightmare!

I have had my Pavilion laptop for nearly 3 years and love it, until recently…..
Battery will not hold in place.. has anyone expereinced similar problems? I no longer can use without Electrical supply very frustrating….
December 16th, 2008 at 9:59 am
I posted this last week, but I don’t see it listed, so I’m posting again. I purchased a DV8000 (model# dv8210us) a few years ago from Best Buy. After a few months the screen became loose but was still fully functional until both hinges eventually cracked. They were FIRST replaced from a local computer repair shop in Aug 2008. The repair was successful and everything was fine until a few weeks ago when the hinges loosened and cracked again. This time the screen is ready to fall off. I googled my problem and that’s how I came across your website and the many other complaints regarding this laptop. I contacted HP a few days ago and was told since my laptop is out of warranty there is nothing they can do. After reading these comments, it is apparent this is a design flaw and that response from HP is unacceptable, no I will be contacting them again. I’m also encouraged that this site helped bring resolution to the DV9000 issues and I’m hopeful the same will be true of the DV8000 series. Thanks for listening.

I had the same problem with y DV8000. I noticed the left hinge started to have play in it. I didn’t think much of it until the plastic snapped and the hinge broke. Unreal considering I take very good care of my laptop. I’ve only had the computer for 3 years and I will never purchase an HP again unless they fix it.
January 18th, 2009 at 12:49 am
I got my dv8000 about 3 years ago, and just recently a large crack started growing in the lower left corner, till it finally split off. I can no longer close my laptop lid, which means i’ve lost virtually all portability… it sucks…
January 23rd, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Daughter was at college and her left hinge froze up. She called home very upset because she had to look at her screen tilted back. You cannot move it forward because it raises the plastic. Her laptop is an HP DV5139. When we purchased the computer paid over 300.00 for a service contract and it just expired in June of 2008. I think they have a timer on when your computer will fall apart. Any suggestions for ordering the hinge at a cheap price.
January 27th, 2009 at 8:21 am
I got my DV8000 (model # 8301nr) in august of ‘06 and 2yrs later i was experiencing the same problem, but i ignored it. After 4 months being like this the bottom left corner of the screen was broken and it would close. I called HP and they said it would take $298 to repair it and shipping was included. Bare in mind that the Hinges only cost $49, and i don’t think shipping would be that much either. I bought the Hinges along with the front bezel that was broken and attempted to repair the computer myself, with success:-D.
P.S I did all of that with about $100 including shipping.
And if you’re going to attempt repairs read the manual on how to do so. It’s pretty straight forward. GOODLUCK!!!

I have an 8309 from Circuit City that I was relatively happy with. My main complaints have been the electrical cord which must be replaced once a year. The battery is useless, maybe 15 minute charge. It overheats and shuts off, oh and now the display is loose and has play in it. I do not think I will get another HP. All they want is hundreds of dollars to repair a product that is built poorly. Seems that rather than producing a quality product and getting new customer, they would rather make money on repairs.
February 13th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
the dv5000 has been the best laptop I ever bought!!!
it has lasted way longer than my old toshiba, which the power plug broke off the board. the hp 5000 has had some issues like the hinge but that was my fault I dropped it. and the lcd did have an issue but later though it too could have somthing to do with the fall. other than that I love it and hp gets my business in the future, unless of course I go mac book pro! lol
February 13th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Ive experienced the same problem with my hinges i have jus decided to order hinges right now i can get them anywere from 15 to 30 dollars on the interent and i will be replacing them myself eliminating problems ive read from above about labor bills it is quiet easy found it out through trial and error so i solved my problems pretty much
March 6th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
I own dv8113d which I purchased from Costco in Canada in mid 2006. I have the same hinge issue. The right hinge is cracking and now it’s splitting open the monitor border panel whenever I open the laptop. I emailed the HP Support and no response whatsoever.
March 31st, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Same prob here, left hinge became stiff until eventually the plastic screen bevel just basically blew up along with the hinge. The screen is still working (at the moment) but having read the previous comments it seems I better make the necessary repairs before the laptop finally gives up the ghost. Parts are readily available on the internet and from what I’ve seen, you can make those repairs yourself if you take your time and follow the instructions closely.
Other issues are the power lead, I’ve had to replace mine twice in two years! Oh yeah…the battery? Dont even mention that, its really just a paperweight.
Given their shoddy attitude to this and other problems, it seems that HP arent too interested in holding onto their present customers, nor are they overly concerned as to what we may think of them…or SAY about them to others.
So be it!!! Tell the world exactly what you think of HP. Advise your friends, family and anyone else who’ll listen, about HP’s shameful treatment of their customers, and their refusal to rectify faulty equipment. Faulty equipment that you and I have paid out good money to purchase.
April 12th, 2009 at 7:40 am
Purchased my DV8000 June/July 2006 from office depot, Never got the $150.00 mail in rebates (so I sent origionals as requested, then they wouldn’t even take my calls.)
Touchpad rubbed off with 6 months, Hinge Cracked at 8 months. Wondering what my recourses are I did purchase and extended warranty, and I’m currently looking into repair, I know it will be gone for some time. Do you think if support were stateside they could figure out that if hundreds of people are calling about the same think they might be related?, Does HP benefit from “PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY” You betcha.. Does the Manager of US based support have any info on these cases? Well, the Indian Support team Never gave us that INFO…. WELL BUCKO WE ARE, You laptops are BREAKING Under NORMAL USE and it is because of a design FLAW, I May go as far as to have the alloy tested for strength in a lab then to calculate the weight of the screen and newtons needed for closure, Bet they don’t add up. Have you even seen the Hinges, Look like cast aluminum, not very sturdy and I have identified a few cracks that could have been rectified with a couple of thickened cross pieces.
Oh… and about the battery…. on my third and third charger as well.. What are you selling us??
Thanks

I have an HP dv8130us I bought in Sept 2006. Around Sept 2008 the left hinge broke, followed shortly after by the right hinge. I found a new set on ebay, and ordered them. I installed them (not too terribly difficult) and was happy again. A week ago, I tried to close the laptop an discovered the left hinge broken again. So, I got about 6 months out of the pair I installed. I am going make the rapair one more time. When this next pair of hinges breaks (as I am certain they will) I am going to chuck the whole thing, buy a used laptop and install my backup on it. Either way, I now own the last HP product I will ever own. Good Luck all.
April 22nd, 2009 at 2:53 am
I am on here because my first laptop was an HP, purchased in 2005, ZV5000 series. After about a year and a half the hinges broke thus my monitor does not stay up and ofcourse out of warranty meanwhile. This was 3 years ago. My little brother purchased his HP Late ‘07, DV8000, and also about a year and a half later, it’s hinges are barely holding teh monitor up, the cover is cracked…after this, and reading the posts, clearly the DV9000 is not the only defect and HP needs to bite the bullet. Also, another bogus defect, the computer overheats and needs to shut off when playing simple games such as solitaire. Looks like my next mobile will be an Apple, Not HP.
May 16th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
I bought our dv8220ca in June 2006. The left hinge broke and the laptop would not work because the cable came loose, I paid $60 just to reattach the cable but the hinge is still broken…HP doesn’t have a replacement part so my local repair guy can’t repair it. Now we have to leave the laptop stationary and supported so the lid doesn’t close and break the cable again…I am trying to find out where I can get the hinge part to get it fixed. When I called HP they offered to fix it for $400.00!!!! Aren’t they generous!!!!! I had called them May 14/09. The laptop sure does get very hot and so does the ac adaptor. I think my next computer will be apple.
May 21st, 2009 at 11:12 pm
Same problem here. Both hinges are about shot, I am gingerly nursing this problem along. I have 3 HP computers in my house. I don’t think I will get another.
Same additional problems battery, just adds weight to the computer. Maybe a 10 minute charge when fully charged. Also on my 3rd power cord.
Not very happy with HP.
July 11th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
I have the same problems with my laptop DV 8000 as posted above. I bought my laptop in August of 2006 and after 1 year my battery had less than 5 minutes of life. About 8 months ago the hinges on the right side started going. Did not affect me greatly because I used my Dell Company laptop. But been laid off for a month and now the screen is much worst as I am using it daily. the screen is actually detaching from the casing (and I no longer attempt to close the screen and now use it as a desktop). I paid more than $1,200 for the laptop because it had lots of memory and its big screen. I also expected it to function great for 4 to 5 years. I did not expect the battery life to be more than 2 years but did expect that I could actually use it as a laptop and not fear that by closing it might completely detach. If laptops are really not more reliable than a couple years why buy one over $1,000 when you can purchase one for $500 and just flip it two years later. I am not going to pay $100 for a new battery and replace the hinges problem for $300-$400 when I can get a brand new laptop for $500. HP should try to have their products last longer if they are true believers of being environmentally friendly because it appears they make products to last 2 years.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:54 am
DV8387 2 years ago- both hinges totally destroyed !!
good old eaby to the rescue- a pair of good used units for £9.50- so will be fitting these shortly.
HP UK not interested, although their parts supplier has accepted these are no good, and is selling for £15 a pair.
August 26th, 2009 at 11:44 am
My left hinge has broken also. I have a dv8309us that I bought Dec of 2006. I have found new hinges on EBay for $16 and new display screws for only $2.45. The screws took some looking as I don’t need the whole screw kit for $15. I found some generic ones for $2.45 by looking for HP laptop Screws. Now to just find a few replacement feet without having to buy the whole plastics kit!
September 2nd, 2009 at 11:29 am
I have an dying DV8125nr, screen is on the fritz, the USB ports quit after the first overheat and the sd card reader has to be disabled or it keeps the machine from working, working on my second power supply, and if it’s not bad enough, upgrading the second hard drive bay causes the computer to not recognize the primary. Oh yeah to fix the overheating issue I had to drill holes in the bottom case above the cpu fan so that it could draw air…. I guess that’s one problem solved.
I can’t replace this thing with a new one, just dont have the resources. So if any of you decide to get rid of your computer for a new one, email me at a.haecker@sbcglobal.net and i’ll recycle your dv8000, maybe i can get one out of several.
Thanks

Same problem as every body here!! (battery max time 5 mins, power cord fixed around 4 times, broken hinders, broken lcd cover, hard driven changed, and flickering screen).
I have had this PC for about 4 or 5 years, but last 2 years were a complete nightmare. I was thinking that I did not take enough care of my PC; but reading this website I now know that is not true because every body have the same problems I do.
Not happy with HP anymore!!!!

I buyed one HP Pavilion dv8345ea in 2007 and…
1. DVD device broke in 2008. Replaced by another unit.
2. Ethernet device broke in 2008. Disabled and replaced by a PCMCIA device.
4. DC power supply switches off randomlly without cause. I dont know what fucking could i do with this.
3. Both hinges broke in 2009. Replacing via eBay…
In short, an absolute shit of components.

Staples are good in selling out of date HP’s. Example, dv8000 laptops, from the first day we got this dv8000
laptop pc it was disappointment on the peformance, the India folks or cheap labor experience was full of sorry, sorry, sorry. They knew that word as if Americans only cared for sorry. But as the saying goes, you pay for what
you get. $1,.290.95 plus tax. was the cost from STAPLE STORE,INC. for my first dv8000 laptop pc. 3 years ago. Now going back 9 months later, it stopped working, no power outputs, so we got it repair cost $195.00 from an hp certify repair center. Yes it works, but super slow, dvd play . Lets not forget battery alway runing low, or not charging. HP please dont ack stupit to our concers regarding your top of the line dv8000 that fell sort on your word, an we quote ” Welcome to HP in Real Life. Here you’ll find stories about how real people use their HP products in exciting, innovative, and inspiring ways. Be sure to check back often for new additions and updates. If you have a story you’d like to share, ” Yes HP dv8000 is junk made in ” CHINA ” I CALL IT KEEP COMING BACK , FOR MORE JUNK, GUEST LIKE EVERY THING THEY MAKE NEVER LAST ,EXAPEL CHEAP BROMS HADLES, DANGERS TOYS, BABY FORMULA , DOG FOOD, TOOTHPASTE, DRYWALL, LETS NOT FOR GET LIGHT BULBS “CFLs” MADE IN CHINA . I REST MY CASE ON, DANGER, FROM A PLACE THAT MAKES JUNK, FOR HP AN MANY OTHERS FOOLS, JEST TO SAVE A PENNY. BYE BYE BYE HP. STUPID IS FOR EVER DO NOT MAKE IT A HABIT. LATER,FROM RS CALIFORNIA USA

I bought mine July 2006 and I had to buy new battery in less than 1 year, this past year, bought another battery and 2 power adapters (kept breaking). hinges began to break earlier this year…little metal bits started falling out then the lid wouldnt close without forcing it and moving it a bit would cause the screen to flicker. A closer look with a flash light revealed that the backlight was off because the detail remained with no light when that happened. I had to restart the computer to get the backlight back on after that. I am going to get my hinges from Ebay also and do it myself. I just bought an ASUS to replace it and they have excellent service. I will NEVER buy another HP product. They have crappy products…also have a compac laptop they made and it is also a turd. My loyalty has moved to ASUS and for printer, I am happy with my Brother brand wireless printer!

I have a dv8396 and it has a broken left hinge, its pretty clear this affects more that just dv9000 models and people in the US as im from the UK.
It really is the perfect ploy to fail, people wont even bother phoning in about this because they’ll assume they broke it out of warranty, HP probably makes a killing selling the hinges too - they cant not have noticed.
Well its clearly a fault by design and its something HP should fix on all models with this if they want our custom.

I have two HP laptops. The DV8113 & 2313cl. Both of them have broken hinges. The 8113 has both hinges broken and the LCD screen cracking. This was under warranty, but HP wouldn’t honor the warranty. The instead refunded the warranty purchase price instead. The 2313 I bought for my daughter in 2007. It’s hinges are now breaking as well. People need to just not buy products from HP. Obviously these are flaws in the manufacturing of a lot of their models.
