Models with hinge cracks
By admin | February 27, 2008
So far, the main notebook models with hinge cracks are the HP dv9000 and the HP dv6000. It has been reported recently that the HP dv8000 model may get hinge cracks, but I am not familiar with this model. If you have a notebook, even if not HP, that has a hinge crack, please reply to this post with the manufacturer, model number, and date you purchased it. Do NOT post detailed messages in this particular post, this is just to list models with problems.

Hi, i have a HP DV8373EA and one of my hinge is completely broken, the other has cracks in the metal, so that’s only a matter of time.
I’m now searching parts to repair it, and i want to do it myself because my warranty is over.
Does someone know a website, that deliveres worldwide, where i can find hinges??

Shouldn’t there be some kind of a list that everyone with this problem could sign. With e.g. name, city and model? I would sign such a list for sure…

Hi:
I have a client who brought me an HP Pavilion dv9005us part number ez452ua#aba with a cracked left hinge. After investigation, it appears that this crack is not due to intentional or unintentional damage. I don’t see evidence of a drop - there is no bowing of twisting of the laptop base. Additionally, there appears to be a short circuit of some sort affecting charging, the playbar, and sound. I spoke with a fine gentleman at HP who indicated that there is a service enhancement program in effect for this problem.
I am now paraphrasing the legal-ease I was read when HP issued the CSO:
The cost of the repair operation to resolve the left hinge crack which lead to issues with a short affecting charging, the playbar, and sound will be zero dollars. Anything outside the scope of this work will be chargeable. The entire repair to occur within 12 business days (1 day to get the box, 1 day to ship, and a maximum of 10 days to repair). If the repair operation will take longer than contracted, I will be informed immediately. I can check status at any time from www.hp.com/go/csostatus or by calling 800-474-6836.
All I had to do was give them this website URL.
Cudos to Adam Dada in Chicago for hosting this site.
March 15th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Randy: You should give this website to everyone at HP that you talk to. They can and will issue a zero dollar CSO if you can convince them that you didn’t drop the device or do something to damage it (like step on it).
I called 800-474-6836 at 7:50PM ET this evening, went through a tier 1 support specialist, was passed to tier 2, and then was issued the customer service order (CSO).

When contact HP refer to Service Enhancement# C01059646
Models affected have serial number CNF760xxxx and below…. Only 17″ models are affected, they qualify for a ONE TIME only bench repair within it’s lifetime. After talking to an HP rep they did not claim they knew of a set “expiration time” on when you can submitfor the issue and they confirmed with a couple other people, but that when you do claim it you use your one time bench repair.
March 24th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
My ZV6000 got cracks on both hinges. It was almost 2 years, 4 months since purchase. It had not broken plastic yet but the screen would not stand up anymore.
On eBay, I bought item “NEW HP ZV5000 ZX5000 ZV6000 HINGE HINGES for 15.4″ LCD” for $89.95. This was the exact item I needed to fix it. Taking the front cover and button plate off was pretty easy and replacing the hinges was easy, too. All you need is a small phillips head for screws and a flat head screwdriver to wedge open the covers.
Almost as good as new now!

I have a HP Pavillion DV9233eu, purchased in March 2007, and the plastic casing on the left hinge has cracked open. This means that the laptop cannot be closed, and even the slightest adjustment to the viewing angle of the screen is prying apart the front and back covers of the screen.

Purchased HP zx5000 2005, both hinges sprung and screen swung freely; both were replaced by HP, now hinges have sprung again and screen won’t stand up. Looking for a source to replace them myself since the extended service agreement is up.
March 30th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Purchased HP ZV5000 series in May 2005. I already had to replace the battery a couple months ago. One of the hinges broke about 6 months ago (it stayed vertical, but couldn’t stand at any other angle) this morning the other hinge broke now it won’t stay open without something proping it up. I can’t believe the cost of even a used replacement, a new 6600mAh battery for less then these friggin’ hinges. Coming from a Designer/Mechanical Engineer background, these sound like they were poorly designed and from the wrong material.

DV9033cl purchased from Costco November 06. Left LCD bezel seam started opening from the security hole (with bits of black plastic falling out of the hole ) December/January 07. Have been trying - unsuccessfully so far - to have HP repair. Did not drop the unit or damage in any way. Obvious design/construction/material flaw.

Another victim of the HP dv9000 left hinge crack club. Only 14 months old and it cracked while opening the screen up. Have been amazed by all the stories on this site. I purchased this through a friend that works at HP. Will be contacting HP to see if this will be repaired for free. Wish me luck
April 11th, 2008 at 2:59 am
I have a DV8240us that I purchased in May 2006. The hinge has completely snapped off. I took off the plastic cover to find that it was the only thing semi holding the screen on. I have never had any luck with any laptop, first a defective Dell Inspiron XPS, now a flimsy HP. Definitely going to have to get something with an aluminum case next time. Oh yeah, no warranty here. Fun times.

UPDATE:
04/12/08
called HP tech support today and at first they tried to get the $49.95 for out of warranty service fee, I told the lady that this was not a warranty issue but rather a design flaw and directed her to this website. When they came back to the phone they said even though I am 157 days out of warranty, they would fix my laptop for free. They are sending me a fed ex box and said I should have my laptop back within 7-9 business days after they receive it. I had no problems at all and am very happy with the service I received (as of now) from the HP phone support people. Anybody still looking for a resolution should call HP tech support and direct them to this website, I’m thinking they have had enough people call that they are now covering this defect under warranty even out of warranty.
Thanks!!!

I have an HP zv6000 with cracked left hinge. It happened about two weeks ago. It was purchased in November of 2006. After a very long conversation on the phone with several people in customer service at HP (which is sooo obviously NOT in the United States) I was told that the zv models are not covered under the enhanced service plan people have discussed on this board. Only the dv models I was told. I was told I could send it in to be repair for $299.00. I cannot type my response here on this family-friendly website! I guess I will take the advise of some others here and try to buy the hinges on Ebay and try to do it myself. After being a loyal HP customer for many years…no more HP for me!

Left hinge broke September 07
Just had it fixed right under the wire of my warranty life. HP put a brand new screen on for free. Anyone who is told they need to provide proof of purchase… keep fighting! I was told the same thing and when I finally fought my way to speaking to an American (I’m not racist but y’all know what I mean), he understood and took care of me. This whole situation is lame! I just got it back today and am wondering when it will break again. Good luck to you all.

Make: HP Pavilion Laptop
Model: dv9207US
Purchase date: May of last year
Summary: 2 weeks after purchase, left bottom side of screen border (near left hinge) started to break apart. The hinge started to crack shortly after. It has steadily gotten worse and HP has continuously refused to service as they claim it was a “User-caused situation”. 2 Months ago, the screen border ripped all the way up the side and totally busted the hinge. I have to put new wads of tape on it every week to allow it to open as it barely closes around the hinge shell. :-/

HP Pavillion ZV5000 Laptop
I am experiencing hinge problems as well, after about 2 years of use my screen will no longer stand up on its own. After contacting HP I was given the runaround of my life and virtually gave up until I found this site and the hinge replacement that is available on ebay. There are so many instances where people will go out and buy a new laptop because of issues like this, but after replacing the hinges and vaccuming out the fans, (and reformatting with a stripped down version of windows xp) the computer is running better than the day I took it out of the box. These PC manufactures must make defects like this on purpose to force people to buying new computers every 2-3 years that they dont need…

Left hinge broken on my dv 9093 with a crack opening up in the backside of the screen. Don´t dare to open and close the laptop since it seems to make the damage worse. Have contacted my dealer who has not heard about this earlier but I was offered to leave it with a complaint repair to HP. Let´s see what if they take care of the problem without a fuzz.

Also was told that it’s not a Manufacturing defect, still puzzled about that one.. Yes quoted 289 to fix it, I’m sure some 2 dollar epoxy will be a better solution.

HP Pavilion zv6000
I bought that laptop form london in october 2005 and the hindge broke in september 2008.
i think there is a design fault with this leptop. because the screen is very heavy and the hindge was not strong enough and was also designed poorly.
i tried to contact HP but they don’t want to replace it because the warrenty period was over. hp don’t use that kind of hindge anymore because i think they also know about it’s weakness.
but why we need to suffer for their design fault? they should replace the hindge without cost, because it’s their fault.
i am in sydney now, if anyone can help me about fixing the hindge of my laptop, please send me the info at shuvro2k@yahoo.com or you can send me text in my mobile too at +61416970322

HP Pavilion zv6000
I bought that laptop from COMET, in near Eastham London in october 2005 and the hindge broke in september 2007. first the left hindge broke, then after a month the right one is gone. i am still using the laptop, by putting 2 big heavy books behind the screen to support it.
i think there is a design fault with this laptop. because the screen is very heavy and the hindge was not strong enough and was also designed poorly.
i tried to contact HP but they don’t want to replace it because the warrenty period was over. they told me it will cost more than $300 to fix it.

May 16th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I have the HP dv9008nr, purchased in Dec. 2006, and broke on May 15, 2008
Just opened it up last night to check the email and it snap, crackle, popped…
on the left side hinge.
I like this computer and think HP should take care of it, especially if they want my business as well as my companies.
With this many people having the defective hinge, I do hope that they will take care of it–at least ONCE!
May 18th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
I POSTED THIS IN THE REPAIR SECTION BY MISTAKE….I APOLOGIZE!!
I tried the online chat feature on the HP site as I thought it would give me a starting point.
I chatted with a guy who was unbelievably helpful (Once he had asked if I had dropped the unit, and I told him I knew it was a design fault)
He was courteous, and confirmed that I was correct when I stated that HP had repaired thousands of these DV9000 hinges.
He took all of my details, and said a box would be with me in 1- 2 days.
Not once did he try to suggest it was anything but a design flaw.
He advised me to take out the battery and hard drive unless I wanted the unit back ‘as from the factory’.
I copied and pasted our chat into a Word document as every sentence was posted, just in case follow up was needed.
My advice would be to try the online chat route, it took me approximately 10 minutes of my time, no problems relaying or understanding a ‘call center’ representative.
I will keep you all updated on the situation….But hopefully that fact that I was prepared for any question that may occur, helped immensely.
For the record, my DV9000 is 6 months OUT OF WARRANTY!!!! Bought early December 2006

ZV6000 cracker hinges. 3 yrs old told by HP $400.00 bench price. Out of Warranty as you can guess.
Local repair guy said approx. $65.00 each hinge and $90.00 labor. Laptop works great even with Vista on it. I had just told myself Wow! this laptop is working great!
Murphy’s Law. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
May 20th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
So the Pre paid box is here on my desk, arrived this morning.
I just have to remove the battery and hard drive send it back and hopefully we are done.
I will let you all know how long the whole process takes.
As I said, try the online chat approach, but have all of the information regarding the service enhancement # and categorically state you consider this a design flaw and that they have repaired 1000s for free for this same flaw!!
Seems to have worked for me…….Total time spent on this with HP about 10 minutes, in fact it has taken me longer to post up the posts on here than it did to get action from HP.

HP Pavilion 9202ea purchased end march 2007.
Left hinge broken start of may 2008.
In may 2007 the screen showed a green line, so screen was replaced under warranty.
I’ve already seen that the screw in the leftbottomcorner of the screen is covered in glue. I expect they did that during reparation in may 2007
May 27th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Well I just got my newly repaired DV9000 back fixed.
They have fitted 2 new hinges, a new display and a new display cover.
Very pleased that I got this done as unit was way out of warranty…Just wondering how long these hinges will last though.
Altogether a pretty good experience with HP and the repair dept, although I am sure had I not be forewarned of this problem during my chat time with them they would have tried to get out of repairing it.

Bought HP Pavilion dv9310us April 2007. Hinge cracked May 2008, about 6 weeks past warranty. Contacted HP tech spt., advised by Case Mgr. to get local (Mich.) estimates, fax to them and would get advice re: amt. HP will/will not cover. I’m disabled—on social security— travel to get estimates real problem + $4-plus for gas!!!. I figure if I really save for about 1 1/2 yrs. maybe I can get a Tadpole running unix.. .. ..

HP Pavilion dv9013cl
Purchased 11/06 at Costco
First left hinge crack in 12/07 (one month out of warranty)
Raised issue first with HP, which refused to repair.
Then raised issue with Costco (which has a free concierge service for all computers, providing an additional one year warranty)
Costco pushed back, but finally repaired in 2/08.
Crack has recurred in 6/08. Am taking up the issue again with Costco first (which is talking to HP). If they won’t repair, I’ll follow the helpful information about contacting HP.

Left Hinge crack in 05/2008
June 14th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
I have a ZV5000 I bought about 3 yrs ago with Costco.
About a year ago in 2007 the right Hinge gave up, I was able to work with the PC with the monitor at either 45 or 135 degree angle. Now with the left Hinge quiting on me, the monitor won’t stay up an any angle.
It’s really frustrating after investing in a new baterie, and even a new keyboard.
HP definitly should look into doing something to fix the problem with users like us that still have this machine in use.
June 15th, 2008 at 8:14 am
purchesed dv9000 at best buy , hinge broke 1 week before warranty was done . hp said it was covered , but i could not give up the laptop untill i could get a replacement. out of frustration i put up with the hinge, till my wifi quit. after serching the web i have come to find out that this is a popular problem.funny thing is the wifi is covered now through hp after warranty but the hinge is not. also the extended warranty from bestbuy( last i talked to them ) won’t cover the hinge.
screeeeeem ……. i will keep up the fight thanks for the web site!

Hello
I have an HP Pavillion zv6000 (zv6233nr) and the hinges have both broken, one right after another. I do not know when I purchased it, around 2 and 1/2 years ago. The hinges broke about 2 years in. I have spoken with HP (about 5 different people) and have been informed that they acknowledge the dv series problem (9000 I believe) but not the zv series. After much kindess followed by hostility by me, I have gotten nowhere. I can either pay for the parts or send the laptop to pay for repair, I did not even get a price as I informed HP they would never get anymore of my money. In fact this begins my revenge against HP, they suck and either are trying to rip people off or they don’t care. My advice to anyone is do not buy an HP laptop, your hinges might break and then you will be as angry as I am now. Thanks for the help, great site. Misery loves company, I’ll bring the cookies next time.
June 18th, 2008 at 8:43 am
We have HP NC4010 model with a similar issue to everyone here. What we have is the left hinge clamp cracked and its cover. I have tried contacting HP but they said it is out of warranty and suggested us buying a package of something that the CSR was not even sure if it is same part that we would need. After much research, we have now narrowed down that our hinge is not broken but the clamp that the hinge is connected to and also connected to base (shell)of keyboard by specially shape screwed. So this has left us in the dark at this moment while this laptop functionally is fine but now sits our non-repairable status.

Both Hinges cracked as of yesterday. Completely unusable as a “LAP”top now as there is no way to do this and support the screen in the proper position.
June 26th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
ZV6000, purchased November 2005, both hinges damaged in November 2007. The screen needs some sort of improvised stand to keep it upright.
Get this: HP wanted $390 to fix it!
June 26th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
HP Pavilion ZV5242qv-purchased August 2004. Today the screen wouldn’t stay “up” without propping. Looks to me like both hinges are cracked. This is a 17 inch screen. Yeppee I can’t wait to call HP the other side of the world.

Hi,
Bought a dv6135nr from BB in Nov. 2006. The hinge broke in Jan. 2008. I had the extended service, so it was covered.
When Best Buy returned it, the receipt just said *adjusted hinge*. I have a sneeky feeling they just super glued it.

Purchased HP Pavilion dv9000 in May 2007, from Comp USA. Left hinge broke 1 month after end of warranty. Also 5 brackets on left side of display cover have snapped. Rubber mounts on bottom are also missing. This notebook has never been mishandled and has never been used outside of the home. I had a gut instinct when purchasing this model that it may not be cosmetically durable and unfortunately I was right.

HP dv9287cl
Purchased from Sam’s Club 5/2007
Left hinge broke 6/2008
July 11th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Purchaased in early 2007. Model: DV9035NR
Hinge broke in early 2008 right passed the warranty period.
Hinge broke (internally) and PC would not shut right. Same break as the others. Left Side at the security hole. Opening it once or twice (from the semi-closed position) shattered the bezel and the screen had to be “balanced” so as to work.
Called HP and they wanted to charge a flat $400 fee to fix it. In case they missed it that would be about 30% of the original cost to fix a hinge! I refused. I purchased a hinge (eBay) for just over $100. Replaced it and it lasted about 30 days.
I now have a tie wrap holding the broken hinge and bezel in place.
I have no recourse…. I can’t believe that HP would do this to it’s customers! Especially a high end notebook like this!
What can I do?!?!!?
July 16th, 2008 at 7:01 am
I have a Pavilion ZV5000 that’s approx 3.5 years old and purchased directly from HP. Had the hinges replace under warranty about a year ago, now they broken again!
I don’t understand how HP can charge $2500 for a notebook with such obvious design errors.
I’ll go ahead and purchase the hinges from e-bay (HP doesn’t have them in stock), but I’m not hopeful they will last.
The good news is it’s almost to for me to upgrade both my desktop and notebook. Would you like to guess which manufacturer is not in consideration? Mac is looking better all the time.

mine is an HP dv9076eu bought it in israel in dec 26, 2006
got hinge crack today 17/07/08, same like others on the back left side on lock hole. thats after paying 2500 nis for replacing mother board and screen. i gave it to hp service on april 2008 for no display, after a week they said its the screen and will cost 1600 nis, iv waited 3 weeks for them to get a new one from usa, then they said that they replaced the screen and the display still isnt good so the need 2 replace the video card witch is on board so they need 2 replace the motherboard, the cost now was 1600+2500=4100 nis, only after i said whats on my mind they said ill only pay 2500 nis.
i got my laptop overall after 1.5 month and they didnt even put it together well so i had to go back for them to connect the keyboard and other stuff to the motherboard.
im not buying hp’s products no more… thats for sure!!!!

Ihave 2 yr old HP dv9000 with hinge problem. HP told me they will fix for $398. Seems outragious for a design flaw. US model HP Pavillion dv 9040us note book. 17″, bought in Nov 2006. Computer powered off every time you moved the hinge, or breathed on the hinge within 5 months or so of purchase.. it took thousands of phone calls to get HP UK to finally mend and return it, they also removed the HD and returned it without that, then returned it with a raw mother board not encased… in all it took them about 5 months to mend that under warranty. Now, 18 months after purchase, the left hinge has broken and the casing is falling off… clearly a related hinge problem. Calling customer care, technical support, for several hours so far has ellicted nothing but evasions, lack of connection between any phone call.. and finally the offer to pay to have the hinge mended by them (can we trust them to make or mend a computer?) for about 260 quid. Basically HP has made a large pile of dud products for which instead of owning up and paying for the repairs, they are now trying to actually charge us to make a profit on their own defective products…

(2) HP ZV6201cl (zv6000 series) laptops, and one zv9000 with all 3 with cracked hinges. HP says pay up its out of warranty! They also deny any defect exists!! That is the funniest part. I have been a long time advocate of HP now looking for my new brand. This mistake will cost them tens of thousands in revenue from my business

On My way to buy a lenovo ThinkPad!!!

I have a Compaq V5305wm purchased at Wal-Mart, in December 06, and I purchased extended warranty from Wal-mart . Now its broken in June 08 and now they won’t assume responsibility. its from the V5000 series, my laptop’s screen case and hinge cracked and broke. HP said they wont respond for it. HP told me they will fix for $398. it seems so outrageous for a design flaw. This is the last time I purchase products from HP if they don’t do something!!!!

i thought it was just a hinge issue, but wondered why i was having intermittent charging and sound issues. Found this site and now i know that all three issues are related. Will call HP tomorrow.

Please let me know if anyone has been successfull in getting their laptop fixed in regards tio the hinge problem. If you had a ticket number with HP and it was out of warranty and they still fixed it for you free of charge - PLEASE provide your ticket number - this will help a lot of people. I was just on the phone with them for over 1 hour with their call center in India!

PURCHASED HPZV6000 04/2006 BOTH HINGES BROKE 07/31/2008
August 1st, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Same here. Purchased a HP Pavilion dv9000t CTO notebook in December 2006. Just after the one year warranty expired (June 2008), the hinge by the Kensington lock device (which I never used) split apart, and I had to pay $319.24 to HP for repair.
I have VISA Warranty Manager service which doubles the manufacturers warranty and hence should cover the repair, but they have initially declined my claim stating that it was “accidental damage” by me! I am hoping to rectify this error with VISA Warranty Manager service, and also hoping that HP will fix the design flaw without making customers like me pay $319.

I have an HP dv9000, almost a year and a half old, and definitely out of warranty, with a broken front left hinged that cracks open whenever trying to open or close the notebook.
I just got done with a battle (most appropriate word) with HP customer support, and they are sending me a box tomorrow for a free repair!
It’s a very frustrating experience, but if you get on the phone and present them with your case (you know it is a design defect, you’ve heard of others getting free repairs, you know of this site, and you mention Service Enhancement# C01059646) and keep moving up the phone chain towards a supervisor you can do it. I was pretty astounded and disappointed by the lengths they would try to go to get out of granting my repair request, but in the end they aknowledged the common design flaw and gave in.
Thanks so much to everyone who has written and helped out on this site, and good luck to everybody with a similar problem.

ZV6000 CTO
(custom - built / many upgrades $$$ at order)
Perhaps, HP should offer hinge upgrades?
Both hinges broken …. Following multiple phone calls to
HP customer service (CS), tech support (TS), and case managers:
CS: Model not on recall list, is repairable, must send in and will cost $265 to repair (no mention of shipping).
TS: Aware of hinge problem with model, though need case number to “escalate”, is repairable, must send in and will cost $285 to repair, requested case number … received and called case manager number and extension #94, as referred by others.
TS: Model not recalled, following explanation of condition of broken hinges while sitting still on desk, for left, and right after slight movement to check condtion of lid after hearing popping noise of left hinge, HP rep stated that unit [model] is “obsolete”, “too old”, not repairable by HP as parts not in stock. After requesting a courtesy repair for what I termed, an unusual condition, HP rep claimed that, again, parts not available to repair, even if [she] would allow a courtesy repair. I made several attempts to call and discuss the issue and dept. claims to attempt to locate (case-assigned) rep., who has been unavailable each time. Other case managers state that they will ask her to return my call …. No call received so far.
This is the first time I have ever purchased a, relatively, expensive product from a company that many consider to be prestigious and respectable, though not standing behind their products. I went in to a Best Buy store to inquire about a repair. The repair dept. referred me to a laptop computer repair store, whom I called. After explaing the condition, I was told that it was an obvious problem that HP was well aware of, and that he has repaired hundreds of HP laptops with the same or similar conditions. I, personally, am amazed that a large company, relying on repeat business, would allow a relatively low-tech, though highly important functioning part (not cosmetic, as have read elsewhere) to determine the future business. I do wonder how much emphasis was placed on the overall quality (design, engineering and place of manufacturing) of such a part, that they can claim them to be “HP”, as to some, the hinges are defining the company’s integrity.

September 2nd, 2008 at 7:29 pm
hp dv9005us bought October 2006
I think I always heard soft click sound in hinge. Hinge on left side started to seperate under the year warranty (maybe 6 mo.) I called twice while under warranty as it got worse - HP “customer service” accused me of dropping it and said that it was not covered under warranty. They also said that the hinges could not be replaced, even at my expense, and they would only replace the entire screen instead costing $700.
The gap at the hinge is about 5mm wide now and the lid/screen falls sometimes. I can no longer close the lid on my laptop and have to strap it in the back seat open using the seat belt to keep it steady when I have to move it.
In comparison, my previous laptop was a Toshiba from 2000. I actually did drop it. Down the stairs. It still works and I’m using it now.

hp dv9040us, purchased December 2006
Left hinge started cracking in May 2008, almost completely gone by August 2008
Sent in for service under CompUSA extended warranty plan. CompUSA returned unit unrepaired, said physical damage (other than to screen) not covered by their extended warranty plan.
After reading this thread, had Internet chat (Augsut 25) with HP service tech, who escalated the request to a case manager
HP case manager called on August 26, said they would fix hinge for free.
Empty FedEx box for laptop arrive on August 27. I shipped out laptop on August 28 (just before Labor Day holiday)
HP fixed and shpped laptop back on Sept 3. FedEx delivered on Sept 5.

I have a hp nc4010 hinges a junk! The problem is not the design but the matirial they are made from . the hinges should be made from stainess or from tiitanium
the repeated stress is finding the flaws in the casting or weak point. I will not buy another HP Laptop unless they
can guarentee there hinges for a lifetime. I have replaced them and the replacements failed at great expense I guess it time to look at other laptop options other than hp.

Compaq Presario v5000
Purchased August 2006. Left hinge cracked a month ago and finally broke today. Never dropped or kicked. I think the flaw is in the heat vent right below the hinge because everything I have read about the v5000 it is the left hinge that breaks first.
I debated calling Compaq for a replacement but after reading the accounts here I’m not going to waste my time.
Aside from the broken hinge my v5000 has had a problem with keys sticking. My next laptop will not be a Compaq/HP.

I have a ZV6203cl purchased at Sam’s Club 1/23/06. Both hinges broke and I sent it in for repair (paid an extra $80 for 3 yr warranty) and just got it back with both hinges still broken. They don’t consider this “normal wear” as they have not heard of any problems with these hinges. They said the “crack” indicated abuse?
I removed the hinges and JB Welded the broken pieces back together. We’ll see how it works.
September 14th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
9207 purchased in January 07. Hinge crack in July 08. Contacted HP support- quoted a bit less than $300 to fix. Subsequently purchased a Sony laptop for greater dependability, using Frankenstein repaired HP as a desktop with minimal mobility.
How can the company deny the problem when this many people are having it. Never dropped/abused… system cracked under gentle/normal use.

2) Please post a topic where people can report self help
such as glue, plastic welding, reinforcing etc. The temptation to try something like that is overwhelming.

Purchased HP Laptop DV9010US from Circuit City 12/08/06 laptop moniter cover started separating in the seam on the left side closing the laptop cased the hinge to crack.
Also at this time began having wireless problems.
Took the laptop to circuit city, figured the advantage warranty would cover the problem. WRONG They did say they was a recall for all my model series from HP they have to replace the motherboard because it was recalled (defect).
My hinge problem is another story seems they advantage plus warranty doesn’t cover this problem as they say it was my fault it broke. The salesmen told me that the warranty covers anything that goes wrong top to bottom I paid 11,200 for the laptop
another 400.00 for the extended warranty I never used.
PLEASE HELP…Looking to file with Attorney General
Do not purchase Circuit City Advantage Warranty

nc4010.
weak hinges has been good and bad for me.
I have bought 2 nc4010 laptops with broken hinges at a bargain price. After fixing them one more hinge got broken.
The material that HP used to build this hinges is crap, you can be sure that your nc4010 will sooner or later have a broken hinge.
Fortunately, replacement hinges are easy to find and fixing the laptop is also an easy task.

HP Pavilion dv 9230us notebook purchased from Fry’s on 3/12/07. Left hinge began slightly “catching” around 9/08. Left hinge split apart upon opening on 10/15/08. This notebook never leaves my table and is only opened/closed about 1-2 times a day, so I was shocked when it cracked and came apart suddenly! This was my second Pavilion, so very disappointed—will never purchase from HP again!!!

Purchased winter 2006
broke Oct 2008
Hinges were always loose finally broke after 2 years. have also had problem with silver plastic cracking on front bottom corners. Power cord also needed to be fixed, wires pulled out from power box and ground melted. Ive always taken good care of my laptop but “normal wear and tare” seemed to happen a little early
October 21st, 2008 at 2:25 pm
I think my HP Pavillion zv6000 (zn6273EA) is about 2 or 3 years old. About six month ago the right hinge cracked. So the screen could stand up although only in a few positions. About two months after the first hinge broke, so did the other one. Now I have a string to hold the screen up. With a little bit of hope, I was hoping that I could fix this on my own. After removing the bottom part to see how big the crack was, I decided it wasn’t possible.
I don’t think this is reasonable. I hope HP will fix this problem or HP will not be my next choice when I buy a laptop…

I bought my HP dv9000 11/06 from Circuit City with a two year extended warranty. The hinge always made a clicking sound when I open the notebook. The hinge broke 12/07 and the screen went black 2/08. I have been using an external monitor since. I finally decided to take the HP to Circuit City for repairs before the warranty expires in 11/08. I was surprised to hear that Circuit City will not uphold their warranty because the notebook has physical damage. I will never buy anything from Circuit City. I will try HP customer service today.

HP zv5000 laptop purchased summer 2003.
Both screen hinges broke 9 months ago.
Despite several calls and emails to local and

Now I have acquired two hinges on ebay and
plan to replace them.

I love my dv9235nr but have experienced the left crack at the hinge. I’ve taken everything apart and found that mine has been caused by a stripped screw in the bezel itself. There’s not much purchase for the screw to anchor into and it has stripped out.
