HP dv9000 notebook hinge crack update

By admin | October 12, 2007

This is the second post of a series, you can read the first post with comments here.

I wanted to post the comments I received on my first post. I had this mini-blog up just a few weeks and we’re already getting a TON of traffic from Google. I really need you to post your situation in the comment thread so we can see how widespread the issue is.

Comments from previous thread:

I just Fed Exed my HP dv9000 to be repaired. The left hinge began to separate on the backside. Eventually this was followed by a popping noise when opening and closing the laptop. The other day the computer cracked in the bottom of the screen and the hinge had separated even more. A split ran up the left side of the screen.

I talked to HP who sent me a box and label to ship it back. The laptop was purchase in March , 2007.

No follow-up from Dennis, yet, but he’s expecting his laptop soon, maybe already. I e-mailed him today for a status check.

i have the same problem on a dv9013ca… hoping to find a new casing for the lcd as i don’t have a replacement plan for this laptop…. only one i found so far has been terribly expesive… at this point i may just go buy a new one….

I did a follow up here and the hinge/cases are CRAZY expensive. Someone quoted me $650 for a new piece of plastic for a $1200 laptop. Unbelievable!

I have a dv9000 that made a popping sound. I took a look at it, and there is a large crack up the left side. My HP warranty expired about 2 weeks ago. But I did purchase an extended warranty through Staples. As soon as I back up, it is going to get fixed. How long did it take you to get it fixed?

I will follow up with Santi in a few weeks to see if they charged him.

hp dv9035nr
screen split open at security hole… something to do with the hinge. this happened after 4 or 5 months. To open the screen i had to hold the pieces together tightly and move the screen very slowly.

took it back to BestBuy, it was indeed covered but i did have to wait 4 weeks to get it back. Ive only had it back a month or two but i havent had any issues.

That’s what they told me — 4 weeks. I had the exact same thing here, split at security hold, 5 months after buying it. The only way to open or close is to hold the pieces together and move the screen slowly or it pops the screen case out.

hp dv9207us

I had the same problem as Ryan did (he suggested the dv9000 series to me before he had issues with his) and also had to hold the screen together to open and close it without splitting the case open. I’ve had this laptop for maybe 4 months.

I purchased CompUSA’s warranty that covers the screen if damaged, but apparently does not cover the hinges or problems related to the hinges. They refuse to fix my computer because they say it was caused by abuse which it wasn’t.

WHY hasn’t HP issued a recall?

Send them a link to this site. If there’s enough interest, we can start a phone and e-mail campaign to HP and any warranty company that refuses to fix it.

This is why I started this site!

Had a hinge crack on the left side that started splitting the screen. cant open or close it. sent it to HP and they said it was not covered even though I am within my year period. They also told me that it would be cheaper for me to buy a new computer. Grrrr

P.S. the model number is dv9000, Actual Model: dv9035nr

That’s my model as well. I will be sending mine to HP soon, but I need more people to post their experiences so we have something backing it up!

If you had a notebook hinge crack, HP or not, please post your laptop, model number, purchase date, and current results here. Let’s get the numbers together!

I have a dv9035nr with a hinge that’s cracking too. :( I’ve included a link to a pic of the crack. I purchased the laptop in Nov 2006.

I thought it was just my bad luck with laptop hinges, as I had a Toshiba a25-s279 prior to the HP, whose hinges cracked as well - Best Buy’s service plan did cover replacement of those hinges.

i have a hp dv9035nr that my girlfriend purchased for me last xmas - dec2006. mine has the crack as well on the left hand side. it started when the black plastic casing around the monitor came unglued at the seams due to the hinge separating in the back. i did not abuse it all. Sent to HP and they said it would cost me $1200 they refuse to repair under the warranty. Best Buy is not covering under the warranty my girlfriend bought - they say they would only fix it under the accidental damage warranty. Very dissapointing when something this costly falls apart after only 9 months.

I also have had the same problem. with dv9000 series laptop. Hinge broke on left side near security hole after about 5 months. HP said is is covered under the 1 year warranty. I am requesting to speak to a case manager about getting a dv9500 as a replacement because they have addressed this issue in the newer models. I am all for providing information needed to get this issue recalled.

    Andy:

Sorry to hear about your model (same as mine). Please call HP again, and tell them that you read on this site that others have had the same problem fixed under warranty.

If you get nowhere, let me know and I will make a call for you.

This is a defect (a big flaw) and should be repaired free of charge.

I have a DV9095US and it cracked on the bottom left about 11 months after I purchased it. I think my screen lasted longer because I used a cooling deck when I am at home and the Thermaltake cooling pad when I travel. I chatted with HP and they offered to replace it for free under the manufacturers warranty. For those of you who have been turned away you can still try again.

Same here. I bought dv 9035nr in December 2006 at Best Buy. In June the crack started at left hinge, plastic warped at the back and gap spread along the left side. I could still use the computer since I was in the Balkans (Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia). I contacted HP via Skype and personally in all these countries just to learn that HP does not support American-made laptop in Europe. Had shipped it back to my daughter against $300 payment to DHL. HP sent a box and replaced the plastics after some 10 days. Too late for me, since I had to buy a new laptop to complete my work abroad. Toshiba this time, believe me! $1500 expense - unnecessary.

I have purchased my laptop about 3 months ago and about a week ago i hear a squeaking noise in the left hinge and i feel that this may break like a friend of mine.

I have a hp dv2535ea, i also had hp dv9000 series that decided to break on the left hinge just after warranty ran out.

My go to Comet tomorrow and ask them if they can do anything as thats where i got it from (which i doubt as they would allow me to return it with a dead pixel xD)

Next step i will contact hp and see if there is anything that they can do.

I had a similar crack with my dv9000. Just cracked right along the seam of the screen on the side with the lock hole.

I have been speaking to this guy on AIM who also had the same problem with his dv9000.

I should note that the guy on AIM i speak to used his laptop for travel, and used it a lot.
I, on the other hand, used the machine as a desktop replacement and rarely had it leave my room.

I should also note that HP repaired it free of charge, since I was still under warranty, but tech support ended up causing more problems which they apparently failed to repair in subsequent send-ins. They ended up replacing the machine entirely :P.

i have the same issue with the hinge. i bought the dv9000 in january 2007. this is really depressing. i can’t treat this machine like some million-dollar piece of medical equipment and they are saying this is because of abuse?

this is twice as hard for me because in the same week, i was hit with the “disappearing wifi” issue appearing on 6000 and 9000 series HPs. more info can be found

hopefully we all get some good news before our warranties expire, like HP seems to be hoping for. personally, if they dont resolve these issues, i’ll be changing my prefered brand next time around. whats more disappointing is that i really enjoyed HP products.

I have an HP dv9000 and about 6 months after I bought it I had the left hinge problem start to appear. I started to notice the popping noise when I opened and closed it, and the top and bottom of the lcd case started to separate on the left side. Then the popping turned into cracking, and the split got gradually bigger and little bits of black plastic started to fall out. My screen hasn’t cracked yet, and I’m beyond my year warranty by several months, I just try to be careful and hold that left side when I open or close it. My boyfriend’s laptop (A Toshiba) is also cracked on the left side, and I knew that hinges could be a problem, the same with phones, but that I found so many Google results on my model laptop, and that there is a blog devoted to the problem, makes our particular problem so conspicuous that it makes me laugh. I’m not sure what to expect from HP though.

We purchased an HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop in mid 2005 and just a few days ago the right side (if you were typing it is the right side) popped as I was closing it. I was convinced it was something I did and got the evil eye when I mentioned it to my husband that the screen hinge separated and all I did was close the screen the same way we had been closing it since we owned it. I am not convinced he believes me and he says he’ll try to fix it since now the screen wants to flop backwards freely and the split is getting bigger. Obviously out of warranty..bought at Best Buy

My first HP Pavillion suffered from the dreaded power plug syndrome, expensive to fix, no help from HP but I loved that machine and sprung for a new DV9000 series in spring 2007. I use it almost daily, keep it in an HP docking station Monday - Friday, removing it only for SAFE use in my house over the weekends. So the screen sees very few open-close cycles, and I don’t use it in bed, in the car, etc.

About a week ago I began to hear the creaking you all are mentioning, and this past week the screen split wide open along the left side, and yes, pieces of broken plastic are falling out.

In reading these comments, I have almost zero hope that HP will make me whole for this, and I just can’t afford to let this machine go for a month or more as I use it daily. I’m going to do two things: 3) research other mfg’s. reviews, user comments, etc., 2) document this problem and file a complaint with my state’s attorney general’s office (very proactive and consumer friendly), and 3) go out of my way to avoid all HP products, and not to sound like a crank, I will be very vocal about my abysmal experiences with these not-inexpensive machines.

I had the exact same problem. I bought mine about 9 months ago from best buy dv9035nr. Love the machine, left side hinge started to pop, and noticed it was coming apart at the plastic frame then grew bigger. I baby all my laptops (I’ve owned 3 other HP laptops). I was very supprised about this flaw. I sent it back to Best Buy and they sent it to HP for repair. Got it back in about 3 weeks. I dont know if the 1yr warranty covered it, but im assuming so. I also have the 3yr extended package which i always get. I got this notebook somewhat free as my last HP i accidentally fried the board and Best Buy gave me a new one to replace it. All in all besides the hinge issue, this laptop rocks :-)

We bought two of the dv9000s in May 07 after our house was robbed and our desktops stolen. We bought them at Circuit City. In August I bought a dv6000 and gave the 9000 to my daughter (the 9000 was too bulky for me). She takes it everywhere and when I saw the crack I thought she’d done it - though she swore she didn’t drop it at all. Until tonight when we noticed the second laptop had the same problem we didn’t believe her - now we have TWO of these dv9000s we’ll have to get repaired. Thank goodness we found this site!!! We’ll call HP tomorrow and update you on what happens.

Same problem - hinge seems to have stuck and cracked on the left side, by the small hole with the lock icon. I can’t close the laptop without worrying the screen will crack. The plastic frame on the left side is completely separated from the screen itself and will not snap back into place.

I called HP but the 1 year warranty expired 3 weeks ago. They said they could fix for $300 - $400 but the parts would only be warrantied for 3 months. I’m afraid I’ll have the same problem again.

  28. D Scott Says:

Same problem as everyone else with the cracked left edge of LCD lid on my dv9000. Security screw just popped out today. Mine has been sitting on my desk for weeks, always running, with very little opening/closing of the lid. Rarely travel with it either, but when I do, it’s always in a padded laptop bag. Bought mine in June 2007, so less than 6 months old. Maybe it’s a coincidence, but everyone knows that the top left corner of this model gets extremely hot very quickly. So hot that if not vented, the laptop will immediately shut down. I’m no engineer. But with that kind of heat, it is quite plausible that the plastic hinge and screw hole right above this hot area are literally melting or suffering some type of structural fatigue. Notice that it does not happen to the hinge on the right side of the screen. So if the left hinge cracking defect is true, then this is a major design flaw by HP and should be covered by them willingly. From this thread it sounds like HP’s warranty coverage for this problem is hit or miss. Suggest that if you miss, that you escalate the issue—along with this and other threads—to HP’s highest level of customer service and then to their Consumer Marketing VP.

HP has tried to turn around their quality and service image in the last year. Spent lots of money advertising it too. You would think that with all the complaints about this hinge/lid problem would be enough evidence for HP to cheerfully and quickly issue a free repair before this type of negative press spreads faster and hotter than a California brush fire.

The same exact thing happened to my dv9000 a few weeks ago. I am still very upset, but it does help to know that I am not the only one. I hope that together we can get HP to do something about this. I cannot afford to have it repaired. I just hope that HP will honor my warranty considering I purchased the computer exactly 1 year ago today. I am kicking myself for not contacting them when it first happened!

I have a hp dv2000 model and have a very sticky left side hinge. Its often hard to open an close the unit. If I dont open it slowly I guess it will crack.

I think when the unit gets hot the plastic expands causing it to get really tight around the hinge area. For some of you guys it actually cracked the plastic or when you opened the lid it cracked. It’s bs.

This is pitiful for HP. I have the exact same problem and my husband suggested I Google to see if there were any postings about it being a problem with the unit and lo and behold here you all are. I purchased mine exactly a year ago, never dropped it or banged it into anything as it rarely leaves my desk. I had difficulty opening it two days ago and when it finally did open I heard the “creaking” at the left hinge. The hinge is separating and it’s splitting further and further up the left side. I have to hold it together at the side and hinge to open an close it. I’m working on a huge CAD project and can’t afford to lose it so I’m leaving it open. I’ll try contacting HP on Monday and see what kind of runaround I get as it seems to vary from post to post.

So I bought mine mine from CompUsa In may 2007. Other than the heating and hence instant shutdown issue I was happy with it. Then one fine day the left bottom of the screen flap near the lock, just came apart for no reason. So I sent it in and they fixed it(replaced the casing I think. Now one week after that I try and connect S-video t o my TV and I see the base unit has also given way. It cracked open near the top of the S-video. It could just be that they didn’t close the base casing properly. It just opened up a few mm’s and looks all set to break soon. So I am sending it again. I have 100 some days left on the warranty and this is pissing me off. What if something gives way again? I just don’t want to keep on buying expensive warranties again and again. They should really issue a recall for this. Its a ni9ce piece of equipment but with the overheating and constant cracking they should change or do something about it.

I don’t know if they’ll fix it or I’ll have to go to HP. Either way I’ve had it for 14 months and I think all the warranties are expired. Just so everyone knows, if your warranty has expired HP will charge you. I contacted them today 12/13/07, and they told me since my dv9030us was 29 days out of warranty it would cost $298. If I waited untill I was 30 days out of warranty it was going to cost me $450. Which is ridiculous, and I’m so frustrated right now. The screen and the pixles are fine, and yet it’s going to cost $300 just to get a peice of plastic fixed. If yours starts to crack, get it repaired before the warranty expires.

My dv9225us cracked open on the left side by the security lock slot. A good chunk of the bezel is separated now. When I called HP, they said they wouldn’t cover it and it would be approximately $700 to fix.

That was the first (and probably last) Wintel machine I’ll buy. I now have a sturdy MacBook Pro.

The HP wouldn’t hibernate correctly when I closed the lid, and when it did, it would lose the Broadcom hardware. I’d have to repeatedly hibernate/wake until it sorted itself out.

I’ll try HP customer service again.

    Update on HP service:

Important: My dv9000 was still under its 12 month warranty period. I was pleasantly surprised when my perfect-fit empty shipping carton arrived at my home in 2 days. Just like HP promised.

Because only my monitor/lid was damaged, I asked HP if removing my hard drive would violate my warranty. They said no it wouldn’t Removing the hard drive (so I did not have to back it up or worry about it being damaged while in transit to/from HP Repair) took all but 5 minutes to remove 2 Phillips screws and to lift out the drive. Replacing the drive was just as easy.

HP quoted that repair would take 5 working days. In fact, it took only 2 days: one to replace the monitor/lid with a new one (not a repair job!), and one day for FedEx Next Day Air–all at no cost to me.

A repair form stated that the reason for replacing the monitor/lid was due to “faulty workmanship and poor assembly”. I do not agree that this was the reason for the hinge cracking. But it sounds like HP does not want to admit what we all know—the hinge design is defective.

In summary, I have nothing but kudos for HP’s warranty service. I only wish that they would offer the same level of professionalism and interest in their customers by replacing their defective monitors/lids free of charge (unless there is a clear sign of abuse).

Ditto. I thought I was the only person with this problem until I found this website. Thank you for helping me deal with my frustration.

Anyway, I spent about one hour in an online support chatroom with HP a few days ago. My HP Paviolion dv9000 started cracking on the left side by the security slot 3 days after my warranty expired. No luck for me. They said they would send an empty box for me to pack the laptop in. They said it would only take a few days to get back. They said I could get it repaired for about $298 or they could hook me up with a new laptop for $500-$700. Wow! Thanks! HP won’t stand by their products by making the situation right, but they want me to continue to purchase their equipment. Ya right! I am very disappointed in how they handling (or mishandling) the situation. I already paid fairly big bucks (at least for me) and they want me to basically pay for half of a computer that I already have.

I asked the technician if HP planned on issue any sort of recall for the hinges. He said as of right now, “No.” He will email me if there is a recall. We’ll see if this actually happens.

Removed drive and installed an unformatted spare drive. Best Buy only had a 120 G instock, thought about gutting out a cheaper/larger external USB drive in hopes of finding a SATA inside, but a rush trip before the holidays and trying to get a speedy repair didn’t allow.

Don’t have to worry about using the backup and restore process and all the associated hassles with reinstalling my legitimate software, with the licenses verifications, at least if the same unit is returned.

Existing drive had an adapter for the SATA drive connection, which was pulled off and installed on spare. (Adapter at first look, appears to be part of drive connector.) If all works out I’ll use one drive for data only. I have looked and will need an adapter/mounting bracket.

    Unit FedEx’ed 12/18/07, received at HP 12/19/07.

HP email indicates that expected delivery date of return is 1/2/08.

    So far so good….

Ditto here, the screen split open on the security lock’s hole, open it up, the plastic that should hold the screws are completely shattered ( 4 of them) and the metal holder that connects the hinges to the screen is also crack, it is showing what the expert called, “metal fatigue”. I tried to “super glue” it, metal cement it, epoxy it, king kong adhesive it, super whatever-to-make-them-stick-together-back it, NO DICE.

Should we all exchange our email addresses, and make a petition to HP, some how for selling a lemon to us. I lost my WIFI a few weeks ago, and now THIS CRACK. Come on HP, make us right. Me, my company is switching brand, and I will strongly suggest all my clients and my friends to switch brand the next time they are going to buy laptops.

I bought this unit in US, but I’m traveling outside the US right now, it is very annoying yet plain embarassing, in front of the clients to have such a out of shaped laptop.

My DV9010ca was purchased in November 2006. Warranty on p/l ran out November 2007 and a few days after that the hinge cracked on the left side right aboe the security latch.

I’m not sending my laptop in to wait for weeks and a repair at a possible cost of >$400. Lucky for me the bezel isn’t damaged to the point of affecting anything (they’re another ~$65.00).

Does anyone here know if the hinge replacement part you can order from HP comes with the screen panel bracket attached? That’s the strip of metal that runs up the side to the top and screws onto the panel. Mine is cracked right on the angled part at the bottom.

Laptop back in working condition, FEDEX just dropped it off. My original unit, battery, “spared” drive were returned. The repair receipt shows that the bezel, lcd cover, 2 hinges and re-imaged drive were installed.

The unformatted drive I installed, as discused above, was loaded with the operating system and all the “as purchased” HP software, etc.

I have reinstalled my old drive and am back running as pre-failure. Don’t like that the hinges broke… but the service and speed of repair was great! My first attempt at using an online agent, it avoided the “listen closely as our options have changed” routine and hours on hold.

THANKS HP! You folks are back on my good list.

I purchased a dv9207 back in April ‘07. I noticed the overheating issues, but just kept my notebook elevated above the desk to increase circulation. It was annoying to have to do that with a brand new laptop but I lived with it. Then, 2 days ago I started hearing the same popping noise and saw the same plastic separation as you all did. I was pretty fed up but was still able to close and open the laptop if I pressed the plastic around the bevel w/ my fingers. Now, it won”t even open or close w/out risk of cracking the whole d@mn screen.

I called HP and those crooks tried charging me $295 for repair. The rep tried saying the warranty did not cover this type of issue. Then he tried saying that I had caused this damage. I explained to him that I never take this laptop off my desk and there is no way I could have caused this damage. I had an idea that maybe the overheating issues might have contributed to the hinge problems, so while he was on the phone, I did a google search and found this page. I explained to him that it looked like several people were experiencing the same problems. He backtracked and said I could send it in and they would do it for free, but if the technicians thought this was done by my error, then they’d have to charge me. This was still unacceptable to me, so I asked to speak to the 2nd level. The next rep seemed like she knew that this was an issue, but she still wouldn’t admit it; however, she did say that they would fix it for free.

I asked her how I would be assured that the same thing wouldn’t happen again 6 months down the line when my warranty expired. She said that the technicians will fix the problem for sure and that I will never have this problem again. I wasn’t so sure how she could make a statement like this. Obviously there are several things wrong w/ this laptop that HP has failed to address properly. I tried getting a free extended warranty out of her, but had no luck. I figure I will try to get this as soon as I get my laptop back. I’ve got several questions and concerns over the handling of this issue.

    1) Obviously many of us have the same problem, and this is a design flaw by HP. It angers me that HP is still trying to rip us off for $300+ (eventhough many of us are still covered by the warranty) when they should be well aware of this problem. If there is no recall, then they should at least inform their 1st level CS Reps of this issue so we don’t have to haggle w/ them over paying a repair fee.

    2) Has anyone received a fixed laptop yet? I can see how HP can temporarily fix this problem, but have they found a permanent solution? Are they using a different material or some sort of boding agent to insure that this won’t happen again? It would be a real bummer, to have the same issue occur after my warranty expires.

    3) Reading through some of these posts, it looks like several people were blamed or blamed others that they knew (ex. brother, sister, kids, etc.) for breaking their laptops. Who could blame them? It angers me that although HP is FULLY AWARE of these flaws, they have failed to send any type of notice to their customers. They are probably banking on the fact that for every X # of customers who complain, there will be Y# of customers who either ignore the problem, blame it on their kids, are too lazy to do anything, or didn’t find a webpage like this. Kind of sucks, but imagine all the kids out there blamed for breaking their parents computers.

My fedex box should be coming soon, so I’ll let you guys know how this turns out. I’m pretty sure I’ll never be purchasing a HP product again. The way the handled this entire situation is plain shady.

p.s. if you still have your warranty, and even if yours expired, don’t take no for an answer. Don’t get conned into only paying “half” of the full charge to get it fixed. This is their mistake and a critical design flaw. Elevate it if you have to, the higher you elevate it, I’m sure the more likely they have heard about this problem and they cannot ignore it.

I purchased my laptop in May of 2007. In late November, I too began to experience the hinge coming apart at the lower left corner — just above the security hole.

I sent the laptop in last Friday (today is Thursday). I got an email from them on Monday saying they’d received the package. They told me I’d have it back in about 11 days.

However, yesterday (Wednesday), they sent another email, in which they said the laptop had been repaired, and was on its way back to me — literally two days after they’d received it.

Obviously, I’m VERY surprised that the issue was resolved (at least that’s what they say), so quickly. A bit concerned though: either the repair center was slow, or they did a shoddy job.

Tomorrow’s the day the laptop comes back. We’ll see how well they fixed things (fingers crossed).

Same problem as others. Our DV9000 has been to HP twice already. Missing WI-FI and failed power plug, both fixed under warranty after spending WAY too much time on the phone with “technicians”. Now that those problems are corrected, it started cracking and popping a few weeks ago at 15 . I disassembled and found all attachment points broken in the plastic case and the metal fatigued to failure between the hinge and metal strip that holds the monitor. It will be a LONG time before HP/Compaq gets any of my $$$$.

The hinge for this unit is about $90 which is still a lot of money… for such a small part.

It is so deceptive as the hinge cover makes you think you have a 3 inch hinge but when you get into it.. it’s a small 1/4 of an inch section gripping the pin and seems to be made of white metal C section around a pin and the C splits.

a $1300 laptop for 2 yrs gets expensive. I could get a used Lenovo with pretty much the same specs for $330. I will never get another HP

My screen “popped” about a year ago, like a week after the warranty expired. I thought it was just me and since I didn’t buy an extended warranty, I also thought I was SOL. After using the edge of my desktop LCD for support for a year, I decided it was time to buy a new one. Since I couldn’t give a broken hinge laptop to my baby bro, I contacted HP support for a replacement part. Estimate - $298. Thats about half of what the laptop cost NIB. Coming from a family with 5 HP laptops and desktops, this is enough to swear me off HP/Compaq completely.

I also have several keys that have popped off. I am sending mine in tommorrow. I work at Best Buy and we recently were granted an exchange for a customer for this issue. Working in the Geek Squad I cannot tell you how many of these units we see sent out for this. Unfortunately this was after I had made my purchase. I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will grant me an exchange as well. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HP, this unit has been a POS since day one. I have an HP DV9000t, bought last February. My lower left hinge started to come apart at the end of october, and proceeded to finish breaking all the way off by the middle of november. Or course the only way to close the screen was to try and hold it together and pray. I also had to add a bit of tape to the latch as the left side would get stuck and not allow me to open the laptop.

I called HP and told them exactly what the issue was, and that if they could send me the part I would love to fix it myself. Of course they said no. I even stressed I am a network admin, and have been a computer technician for many years. Still they said they needed the laptop. Then I told them well since your company formats every repair I’m keeping my hard drives so I wont have to reonfigure my laptop when I get it back. They didnt like that idea but after arguing for a bit I won that battle.

Anyways they sent me the box I received it over night. I shipped the laptop back to them, and within a week recieved a call stating they could not repair my latpop. It’s beyond repair and they will charge me 1050.00 for it to be fixed. I went ballistic. Demanded a supervisor that didn’t work, the “tech” kept saying I dropped it and that the hinges just dont fall apart. I have never dropped this laptop then he tells that it does not work anymore that someone liquid from the screen has come in contact with the motherboard. That is an outright lie I told the “tech” since it worked perectly except for the hinge when i boxed it up and shipped it.

After arguing with the tech for about 20 minutes and telling him exactly what i thought of the shoddy chinese workmenship i asked for the screen bezel and hinge replacement part number and i would just buy it mysel. he wouldnt give me that either. So they sent me back the laptop.

I received it back within 2 days. Needless to say the only issue still is the broken hinge no issues with leaking into the motherboard the laptop works fine if you can keep the screen together.

Any advice on what to do next, I was just searching for the replacement part when I saw this website. Now I am even more angry at HP than before. I thought I was the only one with the hinge isse. GRRRRR….

Chalk up another dc9207US left hinge breakage. I took it apart and the plastics/metal right by the security hole are just shredded. Broken screw holders and broken metal. Exactly as described above. I cannot believe there is that flimsy construction. I have been a professional repair technician for 10 years and was quite surprised when I opened it up. After 3 HPs in a row, I am going back to Dell. I have been repairing Dells for 5 years and the construction and ease of repair is top notch. I just hate to wait for it to show up in the mail. Too bad HP doesn’t offer in home service.

Anyways, thanks to this site I was able to discover a defect and that I needed to call HP. In the chat they agreed to send me the box for the repair. As soon as I described the issue, she immediately agreed to repair. They even told me I could pull my hard drive. I gave her the link to this site, but considering how fast they agreed to fix it, I would say that all of you guys have made an impression on HP.

FYI, you can order parts directly from partsurfer.hp.com. I took mine apart to get parts numbers.
For the DV9207 your back plastics are 432957-001, from panel bezel is 432955-001. Couldn’t get a number on the LCD frame.

Godo luck all. I will let you know when I get mine back.

I posted a message on here on December 20th. Well, I took Jason’s advice from December 25th. I didn’t take “NO” for an answer. I called HP on New Year’s Eve and was on the phone for about one hour, but I got what I wanted: my HP fixed at no charge.

My warranty expired at the end of November in 2007. A few days after the warranty expired, my hinge cracked on the left hand side. I called HP right away and told them. They said it would cost $295 to get it fixed. I couldn’t afford the repair so I left it alone and was VERY upset with HP. I found this site and posted a response. I checked this site every couple of days. Finally, I had the time on New Year’s to call HP.

I talked to a “Level 1″ customer representative and they said it would cost $295 because it is no longer under warranty. I said, “This is unacceptable. I shouldn’t be punished for something HP screwed up on. HP should fix this for free.” She said she doesn’t have the authorization to do this. I asked to speak to someone who is authorized to make this decision.

I then spoke to her supervisor who basically wanted my entire story again. He said he doesn’t have the authority to make the call but he would send it on to a case manager who would determine if my problem is worthy of a “free” repair. The case manager would get back to me in 48 to 72 hours. The supervisor gave me a phone number to the Case Managers Department in case I didn’t hear anything after 72 hours.

I hung up the phone and immediately called the number because I wanted the problem solved now. After talking to a case manager she said everything would be taken care of.

HP sent me a FEDEX box (overnight), I sent my computer out the next day, and had the computer returned to me by Monday. I was without my computer for only 3 days.

It was a pain in the butt to get them to fix my computer, but it was well worth it. My computer is fixed and I still have $295. I feel much better about buying HP products now!

Well, I was closing my laptop for the night - and found that the left hinge was - as many others here - cracking. It will not close without it prying it apart. Now - I have never dropped my laptop or mishandled it, so I am quite disappointed about this.

Nonetheless, I found this website. I contacted HP via the online chat service. I was assured that since this was a manufactural problem, it would be fixed free of charge. Oh - I did mention this page - so perhaps that helped a bit. Anyways, I was told to expect a mail in box in 1-2 business days. Now I just have to back up all my data, etc etc.

I’m hoping that it will be a smooth process rather than the experiences shown by many others on this page.

The online chat worked very well for me so far. No difficult to understand accents or misunderstandings. And I could do this at 1 AM in the morning! If all goes well with the repairs, then I will be at least thankful that it wasn’t a huge pain to get it fixed. BUT - that remains to be seen.

I’ll post an update after I get it back.

Thanks for this site! Made me realize I wasn’t alone.

    Good luck to you all!

Bought a 9000 11/06. Same problem with left hinge started a couple of months ago. Worked OK with careful opening and closing of top, then screen went black and wouldn’t come back on. CompUSA where I bought it claimed it was “cosmetic” and not covered by my extended warranty. When a manager indicated it was a known defect, they sent it back to HP, who returned it un-repaired 4 weeks later claiming it was physically abused. Meanwhile, CompUSA has been sold to liquidators and no longer has a tech repair dept. Glad to see this site and will contact HP again myself citing this blog to see if I have any better response.

A couple of days ago it began to snap, crackle, and pop when I opened and closed the screen. The back of the screen seperated , the hinge broke, and I am now afraid any more handling of this laptop may result in a cracked screen. I took it to a local computer repair and the person there told me that this model of laptop already has a history of the left hinge breaking. The computer repair person told me that it would not be repaired by HP even if it was under warranty. I then called HP and after an exhausting phone call was told by HP it would cost $298 to repair. I asked to speak to someone who had authority such as a supervisor or a case worker but the low level operator would not do so. Fortunately, I then did a google search and found this website. After reading all the other problems people have had with this same issue combined with what the local computer repair person told me about hinges breaking on these HP models, I am 100% sure that there is a manufacturing defect known by HP and they are making it as hard as possible to get repair done at their cost otherwise they would have to admit to the problem and it would cost them a mega bundle. I am willing to form a lawsuit against HP if I don’t get any satisfaction from them over this problem. I have been involved in one other class action lawsuit in my life and believe me when the bad guy is dead wrong and facing admitting to negligence suddenly they will take care of the problem as soon as they can. Wouldn’t it be nice if this happened without all the other lawsuits and shenanigans? How about it, HP?

Well, I have called HP and finally got through to a case worker. The case worker would not repair my laptop for free because he said it is two months out of warranty. After explaining to him about the endemic problem these notebook hinges have, he still said he could do nothing. Finally , after telling him about this website and asking him again to repair the hinge for free, he said he would reduce the cost of the repair by $100 as a gesture of “customer goodwill”. This is not acceptable to me . True customer “goodwill” would be making a product that doesn”t break in 14 months to begin with. I declined his “offer”. Flat out. Do not accept this. Ever. You have recourse. The best recourse is to go through HP’s steps, document your calls and what has been said, then take it to your local claims court. Make copies of the responses on this website. Bring your computer to show the judge the broken hinge. Ask for triple damages. HP cannot afford to send a lawyer for each individual case. This is far better than a class action suit, although HP definitely deserves one in this case.

But this issue is making me dislike hp. I keep it Open ALL the time. I agree 100% with John about his case against HP… All they’re worried about is their darn money. Good Luck to All…

Use an ( L ) shape metal or wooden frame to support your screen. at least it would help it staying in place. Good Luck.

I’m sure what I am going to report won’t be a shock to those of you who have an HP Pavillion dv9000 — the left hinge snap, crackled and popped about 14 months after I purchased the laptop. My unit barely ever leaves the house as it is a replacement for my desktop computer.

I, like everyone else, have now been reduced to leaving my computer open all the time because closing means that opening it would cause the left hinge to crack even more and the side to split. I’m starting to see some signs of the hinge getting worse eventhough I’m not opening and closing the computer. This stinks!!!!

I have to say, I will NEVER purchase another HP product again, including printers, cameras or other media.

I will start my HP calling tomorrow. Would it do any good to call the BBB? Has anyone ever done this? What about consumer reports? Someone should try and get the media to pick up on this…while it isn’t an earth shattering issue, I think some of the consumer reporters on local news might find this interesting. I’m sure each one of us has nighly news segments like “5 on your Side” or something there of. I would be interested to see what would happen should this issue get some ink.

I bought a dv9000t about a year ago in Feb., and the left side of the screen bezel has cracked, have tried to get a local computer repair place to replace the plastic rim, but still no response from HP parts. Seems that it should be fairly easy to replace the bezel, but without the part, it’s a waiting game. Any opinons or class action would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I bought a dv9233 on 8/12/07, and today experienced this problem. I didn’t even use it for the first month I had it as I was still using my old laptop (5 year old e-machines that was 1/3 of the price and never had a single problem, go figure!). Once I did start using it, I was at school and used my desktop 85% of the time, and used my laptop AS a desktop on the very few occasions that I did use it. It started “popping” a couple of weeks ago, but I couldn’t figure out what it was…finally today the hinge ripped loose and cracked the lower left-hand side of the screen case apart near the lock (same as EVERYBODY else). Very disappointing to find that so many people have the same problem and that there is no good solution for it. Naturally, I have no warranty. I WILL get a resolution from HP one way or another though!

Please add me to any current/future mailing lists regarding this problem, and also please include my comments as any proof/testament of the problem!

Following up on my above post (85 I believe)….

I called HP’s 24-hour tech support line. After jumping through hoops, taking my information, looking up the computer specs (although not necessary at all), and informing me I didn’t have a warranty, they told me I had 2 options. Option 1, “replace the entire LCD panel including the hinges for a cost of $698″…even though I informed them that there is absolutely no damage to the LCD itself. They said the whole panel “is an expensive assembly that must be ordered and shipped from Belgium”. Option 2? “Just buy a new one”. I informed him that neither option was acceptable as the notebook was only 5 months old and asked to talk to a supervisor. He put me on hold for about 4 minutes then came back and said: “Your case has been escalated to the highest level possible, and you should receive a call directly from a Case Manager tomorrow morning by 10am.”

I’m not sure if he just wanted me off of the phone, or if HP may finally be willing to somewhat address the issue. I will report back when I find out more.

I keep reading here how a large portion of complaints are from users with cracking less than 12 months after purchase. If you have your original sales receipt, and/or you registered your dv9000 right after you bought it, then HP should honor their 12 month manufacturer’s warranty. I mentioned this blog spot to them and had my warranty registered, so second level support agreed to fix the entire lcd with case for free—all with just one call. The repair turnaround was an amazing 48 hours.

Moreover, I received not just a brand new case, but an entire new LCD monitor too. That is, HP removed the entire LCD monitor assembly from the laptop and replaced it with a complete new unit.

So, if your laptop is less than 12 months old, don’t accept anything less than a free repair/replacement from HP Support. Those of you with laptops over 12 months can only hope that a class action suit will be met by HP with a voluntary recall.

I must say that I’m extremely disgusted and POd with this apparent poor engineering. I also leave mine open as it’s impossible to close and the outside cover is cracked. There’s no question based on the # of owners encountering the same exact issue, that there’s a defect.

Here’s something to do that HP will eventually need to address. File a complaint with the better business bureau of silicon valley. This is the BBB that is in the area of HP’s Headquarters. Go to WWW.SANJOSE.BBB.ORG for their website. File an online complaint. I have done this already and can save you the trouble of looking up HP’s address, which is: HEWLETT-PACKARD CO. 3000 HANOVER ST. STOP 1247, PALO ALTO CA 94304. Also, file a complaint in you own state with your state attorney general’s office. Who knows, it might help. At the very least it will make you feel better . If HP gets flooded with these OFFICIAL COMPLAINTS they might be forced to admit to the problem. Well ,maybe! OK, a snowball’s chance……

Well, Hello all you poor victims lol…

Well, here’s where I stand with this issue: I am a first level tech support for HP Canada. I own an HP laptop as well, a dv2412ca, to be exact. See, from my own experience, we are actually required to have the computer sent in for repair, even a full year - THAT’S RIGHT –> A FULL YEAR!!! after the manufacturer’s original factory warranty if it falls under certain categories. I can’t really disclose what category that is, exactly, but I can tell you that you can have it repaired, at no cost to you. See, the reason why we didn’t take the laptops before January was because we were not aware of the situation, and not enough calls about that issue were generated to let us, Front-Line Agents know that there even was an issue about this. So please, when you call about this issue, please refer to what we call One-Time service enhancement, which gives an extra year of support and repair due to defect-related issues.

does anyone knoe why hp repairs some of these problems with the hinge crack and others they don’t, both in and out of warranty? It seems like hitting the lottery if you get it done free and missing the lottery if you don’t. And if you don’t, it leaves you feel as if you have been taken. Great PR for HP but what does it matter to them anyway. It is just a numbers game to them and apparently I am one of the losing numbers. I can not even get them to respond to their online chat. since i have filed a complaint with them i am guessing that they have blocked my any further inquiry. I am not giving up, however, and will try every and any option to get this repair done. I know that hp knows that most people will give up because the repair is “only” $298, and the time one expends with hp is frustrating and time consuming. If anyone knows a way to combat this by consuming HP’s time, please let me know. Urinated off in ohio.

I do have incredible overheating problems and I am really freaked that come march this hinge crap is gonna screw me over. Is this problem just for people who bought their 9000ts around Dec-Jan of 05-06? And is there a way that I can get a full refund or make a claim so that I can preemptively nip this problem in the bud?

  102. AJ Says:

Same thing happened to my dv9000 several months back after babying it for 4 months after purchase. I emailed BBB and raised hell, then contacted HP. After “dealing” with an agent, I nuked him, went nuclear to a superior who hung up on me, but since I had involved BBB, I relayed each daily communication to them as an update. They contacted HP after I told them I was hung up on. The last agent offered me a new dv9500 which was the latest version of the unit with a couple of newer features. I suspect the hinge is the same though. I also was offered an extended warranty. The dv9500 is superior. The previous AMD proc. ran so hot. This Santa Rosa runs cooler. You’d think I would be happy since I had no hinge problems since and got a much more powerful laptop as an exchange. Wrong. Within the past couple of weeks the laptop fan will start buzzing as though it’s worn out when I attempt to move the laptop.. as though it suddenly went out of balance like a car tire. Too bad there’s no easy access to it. Bottom line is we are paying expensive money for cheap ass crap. HP knows it! The last thing I want to do is start mailing this crap back and forth to HP or start burning tons of gas running back and forth to a repair shop. I was prepared to go inside this thing and fix the previous hinge crack if necessary and I can follow their parts manual to go inside and inspect this blasted fan. I might spray it with some silicone. HP and any other cheesy ass company that can get away with this type of beta testing of such expensive products should not be tolerated. One way to attack them is with this forum but if we all you tubed with videos and such, we could massively campaign against the reputation of HP products. You should not pay hundreds to over a thousand dollars for products that start to deteriorate in 4 months. My desktops, though nothing to brag about (gateway and powerspec brands) took abuse and are still ticking. My powerspec is over 10 years old, runs win 95, has undergone numerous minor surgeries and is still kicking. Yet, this is my second HP laptop in a year and both have failing parts and neither unit was even traveled with. Both were treated with kid gloves, sitting stationary and STILL basic components fail because these units are made of recycled, composite plastics and cheap, Asian parts. My advice would be to contact BBB before you file your complaint with HP. If your laptop is still under a one year warranty, demand a replacement if you have a dv9000 and tell them the hinge treatment is a inherent design flaw and you’ll accept nothing less than a replacement of equal or higher value in the dv9500. That’s if you have no other options. Also demand an extended warranty at no cost emphasizing that you have absolutely no confidence that their replacement product won’t fail prematurely as well.

Right now this fan is so loud, you obviously know its going to fail. It sounds like it’s all of the sudden rubbing against something and this came out of the blue. I was able to turn the unit off, back on and the noise wouldn’t return for hours or even days. But this time, after the superbowl, it started making huge humming sounds and it will not return to normal this time. It sounds like my desktop pc when the fan has gotten old and dusty, but that usually takes years to get like that. What’s up with this crap. I’ve only had this one since August 07. Let’s face it. If HP has to make them so cheap. The least thing they could do is make them so you can easily access replaceable parts like hinges and, least of all, stupid little exhaust fans….WTF!?

Exact same problem with my dv9010. HP fixed mine, two months out of warranty, and they covered the cost door-to-door which took less than a week (in Ottawa, Canada, repaired in Toronto, Canada).

My strategy to get this response was persistence. Repetitive calls, and emails, legal action threats, and of course, pointing out this page to HP as an example of how many people I knew were enduring the same issue.

Hopefully they will issue an out-of-warranty alert and recall for this soon. They must be getting edgy that someone’s going to blow a loud whistle on them for ignoring a serious design flaw and leaving customers dissatisfied.

I had the same issue as everyone else, At first, the front bezel started to separate from the rest of the screen. I really wasn’t that big for a problem, I could just pop it back in. Eventually, it cracked in two and it wouldn’t even close properly anymore. I have an extended warranty so I took it in and they replaced it, but now the wireless doesn’t work. It stopped working last night. All I get is an orange glow on the switch whether its on the On or Off position.

I called hp who gave me the run around because i wasn’t living in the USA and the laptop was bought there. Trust me i really love my laptop. Its working well but that hinges problem needs to be corrected by HP. I suspect that its the heat from the processor that crystallizes the plastic part of the hinge because its right below the left hinge, hence forth causing it to break off clean. I purchased a DV9205TX in Australia 8 months ago. The area of the screen casing near the security lock is starting to separate just by a couple of millimetres and I can hear a popping sound every time I open or close the lid. I am guessing the screen casing on that side is going to split soon.

I will be making a warranty claim soon, but can’t really yet though because it’s just a tiny gap and the popping sound. I will have to wait until it actually starts to fall apart.

I bought my HP dv9000 (dv9010us to be exact) from Circuit City in Colorado during Black Friday back in ‘06. The side of my screen split in exactly the same place all of you are claiming. It started popping in December and started to become noticeable around January. Convenient that it happened nearly 1 year 1 month after my 1 year manufacturer warranty ran out. Bogus. I searched the web for my problem and am glad I found this site but concerned I don’t have recourse.

Dale, thank all the “aholes” as you describe them. They are the reason YOU got yours fixed for free. NOT because you are such a wonderful person, and so nice and deary, did you get your computer repaired so easily, but because of all the previous complaints that HP received prior to you placing yours. If you had registered your complaint a mere two months ago,you could have been sweeter than the sweetest valentine love note and HP’S answer would have been NO…….HECK NO. Don”t for a minute think that HP repaired you computer so easily because they care about your impecable manners. I did finally get my computer repaired. I was nice. I never lost my temper. But it took me multiple attempts including the BBB and my local state attorney general AND eventually an hour long “online chat” before HP agreed to fix THEIR problem. SO, to all you DALE AHOLES out there who came before me……THANK YOU.

Just found this site after Googling “HP cracked case”. I have a DV9000 series, cracked hinge. I thought for sure one of me kids was about to die over this until I found that the problem was poor workmanship/engineering. No abuse, sits on my desk at home with an occassional trip now and then. This thing has been babied and well taken care of. Not a scratch on it until now.

I will try the HP line tonight. Hopefully, they will simply issue me a box for return/repair like the last few posts here.

Klug, you are right on. Thanks to everyone who’s voice has been heard. No ONE person could solve this on their own.

    I’ll report back…….

I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with HP Support. She kept telling me my unit was out of warranty. I kept telling her that I understood that 12 months had passed since I purchased my laptop. (I have had it 14 months) I was persistent in holding my ground that this was a manufacturing / engineering defect and that I wanted the contact information for someone who could authorize a full repair. No matter what she said, I kept replying with the same comment: this is a manufacturing / engineering defect and that I wanted to talk to someone in authority that could authorize full repairs.

After being on silent hold for another 10 minutes or so she finally gave me the following number to call:

    HP Executive Customer Relations Office
    800-756-0608
    Hours: M-F 8am to 5pm PST

I’ll be the first one on the phone in the morning!

BTW….I have used HP products and have fairly good success with them helping me with my computer / printer issues in the past. Give them a chance to make it right before you get over heated with them.

    Thanks for this website.

Just got off the phone with HP. They quoted a $298 repair charge of which after considerable pressure from me, she waived $150 of the fee. All this after 10 minutes of “this is an engineering problem or faulty manufactureing problem” She called it “accidental damage or normal wear and tear” any way I wanted to look at it, it was not covered under Warranty. I was told even if it happened within 3 months of purchase, HP would not warranty this 100% NO I AM NOT HAPPY.

I asked her if she wanted me to contact their local BBB office and she didn’t flinch, said go ahead if I feel like I need to.

She gave me a case number to refer to and her direct line if I want to take her up on the offer.

I am going to try again, this time chatting online like others have done with some success.

    More to come…..

LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH “THE CRACK” IN THE LOWER LEFT HINGE AREA THAT WAS ALSO SPLITTING MY SCREEN UP THE LEFT SIDE. LET ME TELL YOU, THIS IS 110% A FACTORY FLAW. I HARDLY EVER EVEN OPEN AND CLOSE THIS LAP TOP. I PROCEEDED TO CALL HP AND TELL THEM OF THIS PROBLEM. SINCE MY WARRANTY EXPIRED IN DECEMBER, THE OPERATOR TOLD ME I WOULD NEED TO PAY $298 TO GET IT FIXED. I TOLD HIM “NO WAY MY FRINED” I WILL TAKE THIS TO THE TOP IF I HAVE TO. I’M NOT PAYING IT! NEEDLESS TO SAY, IT WAS LIKE TALKING TO A WALL. HE WASN’T GOING TO CHANGE HIS MIND. COME TO THINK OF IT, I REALLY DON’T THINK HE HAD THE AUTHORITY TO OVERRIDE THE WARRANTY. JUST MY OPINION THOUGH? FINALLY AFTER 20 MINUTES, I HAD ENOUGH OF HIS ACT. I TOLD HIM I WANTED TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE OVER HIM THAT HAD THE POWER TO BYPASS THE WHOLE WARRENTY BS. SO THE OPERATOR CONNECTED ME WITH A “CASE MANAGER” (ANYONE WITH AN EXPIRED WARRANTY, THESE ARE THE PEOPLE YOU NEED TO TALK TO). LET ME TELL YA, THIS GUY WAS AWESOME! HE AGREED TO FIX THE LAP TOP FOR FREE AND ALSO PAY FOR ALL THE SHIPPING, BOTH TO THERE AND BACK TO ME. ALSO, HE INSISTED I CALL HIM BACK WHEN I GET MY LAP TOP BACK. HE GAVE ME HIS EXTENSION AND ALL. LIKE I SAID, THIS GUY WAS AWESOME! THANKS FOR THE PLEASENT EXPERIENCE HP. YOU MANAGED TO KEEP A LOYAL CUSTOMER…

I bought 9010us Dec 27, 2006. 20 days later the HD fried. sent a new one. 10 days later the second fried. had to send it in for motherboard inspection. came back without any repairs even though i sent instructions on how to recreate the problem. Sent back again. New motherboard because of bad disk controller.

Then 5 days before I had to go on a cruise ship for 20 days for work, the left hinge cracked. I didn’t have time to send it in or argue with HP again. I ordered the hinge for about $120 (I think) and found the PDF service manual online.

While on the ship, I did it myself. The problem is with a weak piece of plastic that has a nut embedded in it. It cracks off, then the reinforcement for the hing casing is bad, and the hinge shears. At that point the whole thing is out of alignment and mine wouldn’t even close.

I’ll tell you it only took me about 2 hours to take it apart, replace both hinges, and put it back together. It isn’t bad if you have the patience to follow the instructions and the small tools.

Now, the thing won’t turn on, so I bought a 9730 and swapped the HDs to get me working again. I called Amex to use their buyer protection, and they told me there is a recall on motherboards and mine was affected. I think is is AMD only

    John Klug,

You are dumb Private Pile !!!

I was talking about all the people causing the ruckus AFTER HP had changed their policy.

If the rest of the knuckle heads would read all the posts, then they would realize that AFTER a certain date, and AFTER a certain contact method (online chat instead of calling on the phone) they wouldnt have a problem unless they were being Aholes.

So John Klug, probably the reason why you had to go through all that nonsense before( btw, much appreciated) was because you have the tack and personality of an oozing boil.

Just kidding right there, but, since HP has taken notice, my point was the last thing you want to do right now is be an Ahole. They know what is up.

Bottom line, issue your complaint via online chat and be nice.

If that doesnt work, notify John Klug. (oh man)

  138. Dale Long Says:
    February 29th, 2008 at 2:50 am

    John T.,

    Only do online chat.

    MENTION THIS WEBSITE !!!

They will take of you. If you are an Ahole(sorry Klug), they will not work with you.

That should be all it takes.

Klug is correct, many others before us laid the ground work for this problem to be addressed, and rectified.

However, now that the problem is a focal point for HP, if one does insist on being an Ahole online or on the phone, you will get NOWHERE.

Put yourself in the shoes of the person on the other end. If I think you are an Ahole, then youll suffer.

  139. Liam Says:

HP WILL fix your laptop, but it doesn’t matter how tactful you are (there’s a “t” in there, Dale). They’re still refusing to own up. It’s corporate policy for them not to admit that it’s their fault, or they open themselves up to litigation.

Call this number, and ask for case management (but call normal customer service and try that route first, so you have a case number for them to manage).

    Hewlett-Packard Company
    3000 Hanover Street
    Palo Alto, CA 94304-1185 USA

    Phone: (650) 857-1501
    Fax: (650) 857-5518

Some case managers, like Dale’s, are totally reasonable and have figured out that this is HP’s issue, whether they are allowed to admit it or not. My case manager was… more problematic. I never raise my voice to customer service reps, but this was, in my lifetime, my first exception. It depends entirely on what rep you get.

The first question she asked me was how I got the number. :) When I told them about this site, the case manager visited it and said “Well, we’re going to have to have that site taken down. That’s just libelous.” She also repeatedly tried to convince me that all of us (all 300+ of us) had broken our laptops by negligence, and just wanted something for nothing.

But I refused to cave. I asked for her supervisor. She told me she didn’t have one, and I congratulated her on being the president and CEO of HP. Case managers give you their name and personal extension at the beginning of the conversation, so I told her I’d be calling, every day, until they made good on this clear design flaw.

FINALLY she realized I wouldn’t be blown off, and conceded that “WHILE THIS IS CLEARLY NOT HP’S RESPONSIBILITY,” they don’t want to see their customers frustrated, so they’d make the repair for free.

They sent me a prepaid box. Sent on Monday, back on Thursday, good as new. We’ll see if the repair is an actual fix in about a year, but if it doesn’t hold up, I’ve still got Case Management’s phone number.

DON’T BACK DOWN - HP doesn’t deserve to get away with saddling us with inferior product. They should be owning up, but until they do, you can still get your notebook fixed for free.

I need a full time spell cheker. ha ha

However, I again implore all of you, do NOT call FIRST.

That was my point. IF you read ALL the post here, you will see that the best results are found from CHATTING online FIRST !!!

I have no explanation for this, but IF one would read ALL the posts here, then you would see the pattern.

I thank Liam and Klug for the research and dedication. They made it all possible, however, at this point, after my case and many others, if you simply go online chat with HP, paste this website into your chat, you PROBABLY will not have any issues. At least no one has reported that yet.

UPDATE: the guy literally just got back to me as I hit submit on the last post.

So he said that this was something that was being looked into and they’re recognizing there’s a problem and checking serial numbers for the problem
    (paraphrased quote)

He gave me a case number and is going to send out a box. I’m to expect a call from a Case manager, in the next day or so to confirm an override on the repair cost, so It will be done for free.

It sounds to me like they’re recognising a problem in some range of serial numbers - but not fully putting this under warranty (hence the override)

I imagine that the more people call with complaints (call or chat online seems to make no difference) and hence more serial numbers they’re looking at the wider the range that they will override on.

    GOOD LUCK

    Nick

Once again, left hinge breakage. I tried to tighten the screw underneath the plug but found that it just spins. I also tried using gorilla glue to hold it together, but after openeing it up twice it split again. I called circuit city and they wanted to look at it, so I brought it in. The tech called their warrenty department, since I had an extended warranty which did not include physical damage. The tech told me after he got off the phone that hp should fix it for free and give you a new cover that will not do this again in a year. I called hp asked to talk to a supervisor and was unsuccessful in getting them to fix it for free. At this time I was furious since all of the information presented to me said that hp should fix it for free. The supervisor kept saying that it was physical abuse and not a defect. I asked several times for that statement in writing and she would not give it to me. I told her that I was going to persue legal action and the conversation was terminated. After I cooled off I contacted the online tech via chat and explained the problem and gave him the the link to this website. It was much nicer to go that route and I got a case number and was told that I would be contacted by someone. Lets hope that this solves the problem.

I then called their toll free number and was told the same thing, but I then asked to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor escalated the issue to a case manager and she said she had not heard of the issue before, but immediately said she would send me a box to ship the notebook in and have it repaired at no charge. It looks like the case manager is the key to getting these repaired.

I purchased my dv-9005us notebook in 11/26/2006. On 11/20/2006 I called HP because my wireless was not working properly. They issued a RMA but I needed the computer for x-mas shopping. During the first week of December 2007, it started popping and before long the case was separating on the left side and little bits of plastic were falling out. I figured my daughter or semi-demented mother-in-law had some how broke it. They both got a little questioning on the issue to no avail. I purchased a new computer during chrismas shopping since I could not go without and in January 2008, I was ready to send the dv9005 in for repair for the wireless issue. At that time I started wondering if others were having problems with the cracking and found this blog. That was good and bad. Others were having the same problem but my warrantee had since expired and it seems HP is not very willing to fix although it is a definite defect. The next thing you no my HD crashes, Which I assume is unrelated but who knows. This computer, although very nice in many ways, is really junk. Last year was not a good year for family as well as computers, I lost both my mom and my bro and wanted to get the last pics of them from the computer. Well I just got my HD and pics back from my frriend who does recovery. He has the same computer but since it is always open he hasn’t had any problems. On the other hand, his dad bought the same notebook and it is falling apart.

Now I am ready to take on this falling apart computer issue. Hopefully they will fix the case when they take care of the wireless.

Im just throwing my 2 cents because maybe if enough people blog this HP will consider doing something about it. I too have the dreaded hinge defect, along with other defects. My fan is screaming at me as I type. I had the blessing of my hinge break a month after my 1 year of ownership, thus nullifying my warranty. They won’t do anything about it. I will have to pay an additional $400 dollars to have it repaired… I refuse to pay for something that should be recalled and fixed for free. I have been forced to physically remove my screen before my LCD begins to crack and hook the base to my computer for usage. If this problem is not repaired by HP soon, I will never purchase from HP again (and from the looks of it, I will be in the market very shortly for a new pc). Furthermore, I will never again recommend hp to other people. So far: terrible company, terrible customer service/relations, and unsatisfactory merchandise. I won’t hold my breath though for the to be fixed…

I ran into this problem late summer 2007. Since it occured near the security hinge, I figured it is a design flaw: somebody designing the outer chassis didn’t add up his figures right. As I didn’t have accidental damage warranty coverage and couldn’t disprove mishandling without personal aggravation and self-sacrifice, I attempted to repair it last September.

At first, I tried epoxy putty. It was ugly and ultimately did not do the job. So, scraping and cleaning putty off; I looked closely where I could, between the layers, and saw that there appeared to be a metal bracket just to the left of the hinge. Evidently, it is meant hold whatever attached to it to the main body of the frame. What had broken was the plastic anchor for the screw holding the lid shut about the bracket.

By manipulating the plastic layers such that they would closed completely when I fastened it shut; I carefully drilled a hole into the front face (the LCD side) of the plastic, through the bracket screw hole, but not through the back side. The drill bit I used was sized just smaller than the bracket screw hole’s width. Then, I took a small brass wood screw and screwed the front down. The screw was big enough the thread the screw hole but not so big that it threaded too tightly. Very carefully, I turned the screw further until the threads bit into the plastic to the back and out through the back side. This fastened the rear panel to the metal bracket. Lastly, I counter sunk the head of the wood screw and filed down it’s protruding tip. Now! It all works as it should: everything fits, nothing binds or creaks. The lid opens readily and evenly.

However, the repair looks bad and jerry-rigged. Fortunately, Gorilla Tape (of Gorilla Glue fame) happens to be properly black and tougher than regular duct tape. I used this to patch up the repair and to provide structural re-enforcement during opening and closing.

I have been happy, so far. Nothing is failing and it works sufficiently enough that I find that I have forgotten to be careful when opening my notebook.

I hope this helps y’all as well as it does form me.

A client just brought be a DV9000 with the same problem. He originally thought his daughter had dropped it, but she swore she didn’t. I took a look, definitely a bad design with the hinge and bezel. Too much stress is delivered to the plastic at the bottom corner of the bezel. This forces the bottom of bezel forward, and it separates from the back. On this one, it pulled the head of the screw right through the front of the bezel. Of course, after that the loose bezel binds with the case and it just gets worse.

I had the same problem. Cracked left hinge and bezel. This happened exactly 1 day out of warranty. HP offered NO help. I could send it in to be looked at, starting at $300.00. This will be my last HP. Good luck everyone!!

trley amazing just called HP with the same problem coming apart in the lower left corner. They are sending me a box to ship it to them. Wish me luck.
The model is a dv9207us I still have 74 days left on my 1 yr warranty. I was told they would look at it and decide but it may still be deemed “accidental” even though like many my laptop rarely leaves my desk and has certainly not been dropped.

Thank you Brian S! You are my hero!

For anyone with the DV9000 series having this problem please go read Brian S’s post #72. I followed the same steps he did and after about 4 hours, HP is fixing my laptop free of charge regardless of my 5-day expired warranty.

In summary, here are the steps to take:

    1. Call HP Customer Service 800-752-0900 and make them transfer you to Notebook Technical Support.

Explain that this is NOT accidental damage, but a major design flaw.

Request that they give you a Case Number and that they escalate it to a Case Manager. You will be advised that a Case Manager will contact you within 72 hours and they will give you the Case Managers Department phone number.

    2. Immediately call the Case Managers Department 877-917-4380 and let the automated message repeat 2 or 3 times to transfer you to a Customer Service Rep.

Only give the Rep your Case Number and insist that you will provide the rest of the info when you talk to the Case Manager. They will transfer you to a Supervisor.

    3. Once you get the Supervisor, they will ask you for your Case Number and to verify your phone number again. Again, insist that you will provide any further information to the Case Manager. BE PERSISTENT here! Not rude, just persistent.

    4. Supervisor will put you on hold for awhile, but you will get through to a Case Manager directly. They will provide you with a ticket number and send you a box for the free repair.

It will take some time, but with patience and a little tact you can get HP to fix their flaw.

Hello all, my HP DV9030 exhibited the same failure mode, cracking lid and shattered hinge on LHS 2 months out of warranty. This is clearly a design or manufacture quality problem in that HP have not fully developed the machine construction and it is not fit for purpose. I;I
‘m taking it back to PC World in UK today with a print of this webpage after getting nowhere on the phone. I don’t even use this as a laptop - it sits on my desk at home.

I bought my HP Pavillion dv9000 in November of 06. It appears to have lasted longer than some of yours. However, I had noticed the popping when opening and closing the lid. Now, it’s split and my lid does not line up when closing. The result is that it takes about 4-6 attempts closing in order to put the computer into hibernate. HP said there is no recall, and wanted $59.00 to continue the conversation.

It was a month out of warranty and I called them 3-4 times before they transferred my call to a case manager who agreed to repair it free of charge. My laptop was returned in 3 days!! I have a HP dv9207 it was purchased (of course) 13 months ago. the screen did exactly what everyone is saying, it split from the security hole to the left hinge. The split is small for now and i can close it but the split gets to approx. 1/4 inch. This computer has only been on about 50 times in a year and it sits on a desk open the whole time. This is not an abuse or overuse issue. It’s a crappy design to say the least. I contacted HP today and was told it would cost $698 because for some reason they can’t replace the top casing you have to get a whole new screen. Any ideas???

Well, my first call to HP has produced pretty crappy results. “George” had me on hold for a bit and was apparently perusing your website with his superior and said it’s not an HP sanctioned site (no duh!) and was basically only here so that the creator of the site could get their laptop fixed for nothing. He also said he’s aware of only a “couple” other incidents of the hinge breaking so it’s not considerd a defect. I guess they figure everyone who has posted in the comments are a bunch of flippin’ liars. How nice. Anyway, he said the only way to have the item repaired would be to pay $298. I told him go ahead and escalate my claim and have a case manager call me. Can’t wait to see what they have to say. I hope I have better success than with this first representative. Wish me luck!

Had the same problem as everyone else, hinge casing from left hand side up to mid point of the monitor constantly separates when the monitor is up. Mine was bought right around March of last year. It cracked the same way, up the left side so I couldn’t open or close it, about three months after purchase. I sent it in to get repaired(and, for some reason, they reimaged my harddrive), and it was fine until today, when it all of a sudden cracked just like it did nearly a year ago. I thought it was just mine, but I guess it’s a design flaw.

Same problem here. I took mine to 2 different local places and they said the same thing; hinges need to be replaced. The 2nd place told me that they got a lot of these problems and to call HP. I bought mine in Jan 07 so it was out of warranty. I called HP and spoke to Dexton in tech support. He was very informative. He told me that they were aware of the problem and that they would fix it for free and that he would be sending me a box. I had another problem though. My screen is very dim so Dexton told me that it was the backlight and that it would be covered under warranty. I asked Dexton if they are a different brand of hinges and he said that they were and that they were from a different manufaturer too. Hopefully all will go smoothly.

    Interesting you guys!

I own five hp laptops. Most notably applicable here is my dv9410ca (dv9000 series)
I have like, 107 days left on my dv9000 series warranty.. and I have a few bits of info to offer up here.

First, I had a compaq (hp) v2000 laptop. The hinge split apart along the seam at the hinge cover.. However, it doesn’t appear that it structurally hinders the use of the laptop. It just simply aged and split right along the seam. This particular piece of plastic doesn’t appear to be structurally depended upon to hold the screen open.. however I just noted it for reference to indicate, that age and heat, have an adverse effect on laptop plastics and plastic adhesives. It was simply a plastic seam, it was either glued or fused.

Two other laptops I own, HP’s older ze series, have a full proper metal hinge assembly that is sturdy, very well built, and certainly hardy. Never had any issues with them. They also contain more than one cooling fan! I often wonder if they weren’t American designed. They’re WAY better in the heat.

Now, as for the dv9410 laptop.. here’s what happened this morning.

I don’t have any hinge issues.. yet. I read your website and saw, that the bezel is indeed, showing signs of heat warping right above the cpu cooling fan outlet. This will eventually lead to the same crack/snap issues you folks are having with yours. I just haven’t broken mine yet.

Second, I had an issue with my cpu fan squawking.. so it’s not doing it’s job.. ultimately, that’s what provokes this warranty work.

HP, indicated they will replace/repair and inspect my hinge/bezel assembly (which is very minorly showing signs of plastic fatigue/distortion along it’s seam) and replace my cpu fan. Of course I’m still well within warranty. They promised me that it would be repaired and returned within - get this- nine days.

They promised my prepaid repair box within two days.

Since I haven’t broken the bezel yet, I’m very interested to find out whether they replace it, or not, since it’s not broken yet, but just starting to show telltale signs. It IS on the repair agenda though.. and I also insisted on telling them not to put it back together with dust bunnies inside.. (bad experience at another repair depot who installed a dirty heatsink back onto my cpu). I CHECK THESE THINGS! And I DO know how to raise hell with shoddy electronics repair.. I’m a computer technician.

There’s one common denominator in all of your problems guys.. These laptops simply run way way way too hot! Yes, I said way, three times.

Any of you guys actually able to keep these on your laps must be nuts.. It’s no wonder there was a warning the heat lowers a guy’s counts.. they’re barbecues!

Heat will ultimately cause the demise of this machine’s hard drive and electronics.. But obviously, it’s also the reason you guys are having hinge problems. If they are going to continue to sell laptops with high power cpus and heavy duty hard drives, they’re going to have to better design their cases to take the heat.

All they had to do in the first place, is make the back two rubber feet of this laptop, lift the base of the laptop up another quarter inch so the one fan it DOES have, isn’t trying to suck cool air from under the rest of the scalding hot laptop on a flat surface (which is why some of you have to use coolpads). Try propping the back up without blocking the air intake and see the performance gains!

The dumbed down bios in these machines really takes the cake. I’d rather have the fan run 100 percent, 100 percent of the time, and eat a little bit of noise, than see the symptoms of heat damage, on plastic parts, be everyone’s first indications, that something is wrong in the design of these things.

But I can’t set that. Or anything else. Not because I don’t know how, because it operates within specifications I cannot dictate myself. The bios was rigged to make these things run quiet but way too hot from the factory, was corrected with a bios “update” but was never under an end user’s control. Unchangeable minimum fan specs for noise/heat would be acceptable but I want my laptop fan to run top speed, all the time. That will make MY computer last longer. Why can I not set that function myself! Proprietary bios just takes things way too far.

They’re designed to fail.. and within a lot less time than you all are envisioning opening the lid. It’s a complete waste of resources if you ask me.

And a footnote. HP subtly included a bios update into their dv9000 series to make the fan run more often thus cooling better (at the expense of a little bit more noise). If you haven’t updated it yet, f.3d.

Heat cracked your hinges by distorting plastic. Consider that built in obsolescense. Wait till you blow your components because of excessive heat.

I’ll keep you posted on the repair timeline.

    April 16th, 2008 at 9:10 am

Oh by the way, with little more expertise than repairing a set of eyeglasses..

Remove your hard drive and battery before you send the computer back to hp for repair. They indicated these parts are user serviceable, and it eliminates the possibility they will re image your hard drive before it comes back.. you can plug your drive back in when it comes back, and resume work where you left off last.

I was told by the hp tech, that this is encouraged to lower the shipping weight and improve your privacy anyways. The removal instructions are on hp’s website.

    Yet another case.

Purchased at Costco, last February (I think; i.e., the last month units were sold that were preloaded with XP MCE, prior to Vista)

    Model dv9033cl

I have been noticing the plastic on the left-side (with security lock) has been popping apart for some time when the lid is lowered or raised

I thought it was simpy a snap-together seam of the LCD display casing that was no longer staying “clicked” together.

Tonight I started to lower the lid and noticed lots of separation — I could see internal components showing!

I have never travelled nor dropped this unit.

I always keep, carry, and use it on a cookie sheet of just the right size (the rigid “air insulated” type) so I can use it comfortably in my lap, on my bed, etc.; and it is a hard surface so air can circulate underneath it without worry of blocking the bottom vents.

This is a real shock to discover that this is a common defect issue — thanks for this forum!

Is there any talk of a class action lawsuit? Surely there are some lawyers out there that use this as a desktop replacement (hint, hint). After all, they got batteries replaced for free on tons of various models…

Wow. Unbelievable! Almost 13 months into ownership, I’m seeing the same damn thing y’all are! left hinge/security hole separation of the LCD casing. Unfortunately, I’m 2 weeks past warranty, so i am, as they say, “screwed”. While I have travelled quite extensively with it, i’ve been very careful with the LCD panel. Most of the time for the last 6 months it was on my desk in my stateroom. Given that I’ve gotten a year out of it, I’m tempted to just nurse it along for another 6 months, then replace it when i get home again. Oh, this was AFTER the hard disk died when i dropped a 1oz padlock on the keyboard the day before i was due to fly home from England. that was 6 days past warranty. HP said “tough nuts, no-warranty-boy.”

I shan’t be buying HP again.

I was hung-up on; put on hold; refused a supervisor and utimately directed to the customer care feedback on the HP website. It’s not looking too good. The supervisor’s exact words, “Sir, you said that it appears to be a defect in the design, however, there has been no recall, so you must only be having the problem.” YEAH RIGHT!

I used the customer service chat and eventually got a call from Victor my “case manager” who proceeded to tell me that he didn’t care what I had read, that all repairs were warranty driven. He was incredibly rude. He didn’t even let me talk.

I called the case manager number provided on this site, and was told that I would have to deal with Victor and could not speak to a supervisor, and if I wanted to file a complaint, I would have to deal with Victor directly.

I don’t know what to do at this point.

Hi all. Same problem here. I have a zv6000, first the left hinge, now the right. As much as this cost me (granted it was 2 years ago) there is NO way I’m paying 600 bucks to fix something I didn’t do! This laptop sits on my desk, and gets closed and opened only a few times a week. As a college student, I saved up for this computer and it has been my baby! I paid HP for a lap top, not a computer that I have to prop up against my desk in fears of the actual screen cracking next! All my electronics are HP, I’ve had such good luck with them. But if they don’t help me here, I’ll be switching. They won’t be getting loyalty if they don’t give it back.

Monday I’ll be contacting the BBB and HP. Thanks for everyone’s advice.

    hey tyler.

you and i are on the same boat.

my wireless is also not working. it hasn’t been for the past six months! this is due to a hardware malfunction. HP even realized it here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c01087277#c01087277_identify
you could be eligible for a free repair, but this doesn’t include the broken hinge.

i chatted with online customer service and the lady told me that she would take this case to the “case manager” and that someone would call me in three days. the chat was thursday of last week and still no call! i even saved our little chat so i have proof that she said that.

sigh. now my hinge is still broken, my wireless is gone (having to use an adapter), and my programs are malfunctioning (i don’t know why).

I opened my HP dv9005us tonight, heard a crack and couldn’t get it to lift more than two inches. I finally eased it up to a point where I can see the screen. The plastic frame for the screen broke on the left side (apparently the crack noise) and the hinge is locked. I contacted HP online chatting with Vijak. He said he would have a case manager call me within 24 to 48 hours.

On this same laptop, I had the screen malfunction last September, sent it to HP and got it back in three weeks. At that time HP said my warranty was extended a year, but Vijak found no record of that. I purchased the laptop in January, 2007 so I took it to mean the warranty is extended to September, 2008.

I also sent Vijak this link and said apparently it’s a defect. I’ll let the list know what happens.

I just wanted to add that my DV9207US started doing this yesterday (seams popped open by security slot and having to hold the seam together to close it)

I called HP and they will cover it, but I’m in school full-time through distance learning so I can’t send it in for two weeks.

I purchased it June of 2007 from CompUsa. I’m always very careful, no scratches or dings, I do open and close it frequently since I take it to the library a lot.

So glad I found this site. My left hinge broke in the same manner as everyone elses. I haven’t contacted HP because it was out of warranty and they wouldn’t deal with the Broadcom network card problem I have. But you have inspired me to at least give it a try.
I do have an extended warranty with CompUsa which is now being handled by Assurant Solutions. They’ll fix the screen (which still works) but not the cover.

    Model: dv9010us (purchased Jan07)

I have had the ‘clicking’ noise from the broken frame for quite some time now. It never progressed to an actual broken display. As pointed out elsewhere, I really don’t think this is a heat issue. I think it is just a weak frame on that side of the display.

That became a mute point when the laptop started refusing to even boot up. Turns out there is an issue with the motherboards in the dv6xxx and dv9xxx models and HP has extended the warranty for that also.

Called HP and had a ticket opened for the motherboard repair. In the process of looking for a solution to the no-boot issue I came across this site.

HP sent me a box via FedEx to return the laptop for the motherboard problem. On the same day I handed the laptop off to FedEx I called HP back and mentioned this site and a service number that I found somewhere on this site for the hinge issue and said that as long as the laptop was coming in for the motherboard issue, I wanted the hinge fixed as well. The individual on the call was not the most fluent in English, but he stated that the hinge issue would be added to the ticket for the techs to look at when they received the laptop.

    That was Monday 05/05.
I had the laptop back on Friday 05/09.
    Fixed. Completely.
New motherboard AND new display. I can tell the display is brand new because the design on the top is not as ‘bold’ as the old display, more subdued.

Note about these laptops running hot:
I found a small app (can’t remember the name) for AMD laptops that will display the core temps in real time. Before AND after the repair the laptop would run right around 50 degrees Celsius when flat on a table. If it is lifted up slightly or on my legs with open space under the processor cooling fan the temps drop to low 30 degrees Celsius. I researched laptop temps and 50 degrees Celsius is considered ‘normal’ for laptops.

I fly out to my next ship on June 1st, so I need to get it to them ASAP if I’m to have any hope of getting it back before then.

Just got my unit back from MicroMedics ( www.micromedicsinc.com ), the outfit that Costco uses to repair their units.

I don’t know whether the replacement parts are any better than the originals — I sure hope so — but I must say I am well pleased with the service I’ve received from Costco.

After checking in with Costco to see if perhaps my unit, purchased last January 2007, might have some sort of coverage (the in-store electronics guy said to ask anyway), I was told that it was indeed covered by Costco’s 2-year repair warranty that comes STANDARD with all units they sell! Wow!

To top that off, about every couple of days someone from their “concierge service” was assigned and would call every couple of days to tell me what the current status was throughout the entire process. This began from the moment I called them, to expecting an empty box with pre-paid mailer from MicroMedics, to making sure I received the box, to tracking the transit of the box back to MM, to a near-daily update of MM registering it, diagnosing it, ordering the part(s), the repair day, the shipping day, to it shipping back…

…and she was so polite and friendly every time (maybe I just got lucky)! I’ve never had attention like this from any vendor before — way to go Costco.

Also, MicroMedics included clear/thorough instructions in their well-cushioned pre-paid return mailer box; the UPS tracking number was already assigned; and they had on online repair status system so I could check their progress anytime. Most of the time I knew the status before the Costco lady called (checked often), but it was still very nice to get the attention.

Although the instructions in the box said to include the power adapter, disks, recovery disks, etc., I called up MicroMedics (using the number supplied by Costco), and got an actual person (!) who then confirmed that for these hinges no disks would be necessary. So I removed both hard drives — what a relief that they didn’t insist for some “procedural” reason.

In all my phone calls to HP all I got were “procedural” type answers. I’m so very glad I bought my notbook unit at Costco. Their selection may not be very wide, but generally speaking they have a decent range of choices for the money.

    Thanks, Costco!

I’m glad I googled to see if there were any other poor souls that had the same problem as I did. I have been a loyal HP customer and have 2 other pcs and thinking of getting a new one. But with the problem I’m having with my dv9207us laptop, I may have second thoughts. I too have the hinge separation and popping problem. I purchased from COMPUSA last May, but when I contacted HP live support they told me the warranty was up in March. Figures my luck. It would cost me 298 if I wanted to have it repaired. I looked up the part in the manual and the cost of the rear enclosure is 63 bucks. I’m contemplating to order and fix myself. Anyone else ever do it? But I agree that there seems to be enough people having problems that HP should fix these notebooks or have a recall. If anyone hears, let me know. Thanks

We had more of a hassle with DHL than the entire claim. I am just glad that it was fixed.

so i finally got my notebook fixed, but with a price.

online tech quoted me a $298 to fix the hinge ’cause i was out of warranty. i refused to pay that much so here’s what i did.

my notebook was also faulty of the missing wifi and it would sometimes not start. so that repair was free under HP’s recent limited warranty. online tech suggested that i should purchase a year of post warranty, which would cover my cracked hinge…and that cost $150, half of the original repair. so that’s what i got just to reassure myself that i should be all right for at least another year.

so i got a year of post warranty that covers any external problems and two years from HP’s limited warranty for any internal problems.

    Hi,
From the UK with a DV9092ea. purchased Jan 2007. Left screen hinged “popped” and shards of plastic and a small screw went flying across the room. Quite blatantly an HP Design fault, however I am going to take mine to PC World and get them to repair or replace it under the Sale Of Goods Act, as it is the sellers responsibility to ensure that the goos they sale comply with regulation.

Rest of page only relevant to UK consumers.

    Below info lifted directly from

    http://www.berr.gov.uk/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html

Sale of Goods Act Quick Facts

Subject: Sale of Goods Act, Faulty Goods.

Relevant or Related Legislation: Sale of Goods Act 1979. Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982. Sale and Supply of Goods Act 1994. The Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002.

    Key Facts:

    • Wherever goods are bought they must “conform to contract”. This means they must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality (i.e. not inherently faulty at the time of sale).

    • Goods are of satisfactory quality if they reach the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking into account the price and any description.

    • Aspects of quality include fitness for purpose, freedom from minor defects, appearance and finish, durability and safety.

    • It is the seller, not the manufacturer, who is responsible if goods do not conform to contract.

    • If goods do not conform to contract at the time of sale, purchasers can request their money back “within a reasonable time”. (This is not defined and will depend on circumstances)

    • For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).

    • A purchaser who is a consumer, i.e. is not buying in the course of a business, can alternatively request a repair or replacement.

    • If repair and replacement are not possible or too costly, then the consumer can seek a partial refund, if they have had some benefit from the good, or a full refund if the fault/s have meant they have enjoyed no benefit

    • In general, the onus is on all purchasers to prove the goods did not conform to contract (e.g. was inherently faulty) and should have reasonably lasted until this point in time (i.e. perishable goods do not last for six years).

    • If a consumer chooses to request a repair or replacement, then for the first six months after purchase it will be for the retailer to prove the goods did conform to contract (e.g. were not inherently faulty)

    • After six months and until the end of the six years, it is for the consumer to prove the lack of conformity.

Same left hinge/crack @ security hole slitting up the screen problem here too. Warranty expired 4 months ago…no extended. Just happened today as i slowly and carefull (as always) close the screen… heard a cracking sound…stopped closing, reopened and noticed the split. The screw behind the little rubber cosmetic cover has cracked through the plastic of the bezel. A plastic part that costs HP $2 or $3 has rendered my $1000+ lapotop virtually useless and totally unportable as i can no longer close the lid!!!! THANKS!!!! I think a recall is definatly in order if HP has any integrity and wishes to retain any customer loyalty!

-Notebook purchased Sept 06 (post warrenty period)
-cracks showed up May 08 laptop mostly used as desktop and usually sitting on a cooling pad which probably delayed the on set of the problem
-googled HP laptop hinge problem and located this site
-after a couple hours of reading was getting depressed - figured I was going to go through the corporate runaround as did many on this site
-called customer service main line (Indian gentleman) and recieved the typical BS with regard to warrenty expiration etc. - following advice obtained a case number from him said thanks and let him off the hook
    - called the HP case manager line as outlined in this site and had a nice conversation with Kimberly who readily admitted that they were aware of the problem, proceded to issue me a new transaction #, and promised a shipping container would be mailed - repairs free of charge the call lasted no longer then 15 min total.

Wow, I should’ve looked for this site a long time ago. Bought my DV9000 (dv9225us) from Comp USA sometime in Jan/Feb 2007. Just days before my 1 year warranty ran out, I opened my notebook to a sickening crack & the right side (typing) of my screen cracked. Right away went online to check with HP & see if my warranty was in fact still good. Had “Venessa” tell me that everything was covered & they sent me a box. After a week I check the status & it says to call HP, there are problems. I call & they then tell me it’s actually NOT covered & will cost $750 to fix. After having it out with Victor I believe who is beyond rude, they send my laptop back in more pieces than I sent it to them in. And I put up a major fight.

Low & behold, I ended up buying a replacement screen off ebay for a couple hundred. Installed it, spend a few hours with some Gorilla Glue, & all seemed to be well as long as I handled the notebook like gold.

Well, not even 3 hours ago, my screen completely fell backwards, like something had just let go. I went to close it & again — crack. Now there is a huge split in the side & after opening things up, it appears that the hinge has now completely separated from the screen holder arms. Again with the Gorilla Glue & this time electrical tape to reinforce it, but the split is wider than ever, I can’t close the laptop fully anymore, and I’m due to leave for business with this thing tomorrow.

I’m at a loss if I should even waste my time with HP anymore, or if I should just buy the parts & fix it myself. Lord knows I’m just about an expert as to the inside of this notebook by now. Looks as if the going rate is $75-$100.

Something definitely has to be done, because it sickens me to see just how many people HP has ripped off after so many years of customer loyalty.

I bought the laptop from Ebay. The hinge started cracking in the first 5 months like everyone elses and apparently the warranty was over even though it was a year warranty grrrrr!

I doubt that hp will issue a fix on the problem i mean look at how much money they will lose. All i can say is i will NEVER EVER buy HP ever again. and i will make sure every one i know wont buy from them either.

And now i also have a problem with the Wi-Fi feature which will not connect randomly. Sometimes it will sometimes not. And there was also problems with the quick touch buttons. HP is THE worst!!!!!

I came across this site after google searching for “Pavilion Notebook dv9235nr, lid close, sleep”.

See, about 2 months ago I noticed that when I closed my notebook, the specified option in the power plan “High Performance” was not working. The computer did not go to sleep. In fact the display did not even turn off. I could literally see the light from the disply through the opening in the front.

At first I thought that a Windows Update or a new driver had caused this. I went round and round doing search after search, trying different options, resetting power plans, etc. My wife had suggested that the lid was not fully closing. Originally I had dismissed the theory as I di not see any reason to think that the lid was not closing; the latches closed, clicked, and were secure.

After finding this site however, I looked closer at the display casing a low and behold, I found that the display casing was splitting along the left side near the notebook lock. I found that if I pressed it together while closing the notebook, the display did turn off! Problem found!

    Now the Fix!

I took out the rubber circles over the screws on the bottom front of the display to reveal the screws. I thought tightening them up may fix the problem. I tightened the right side and then tried to tighten the left. However, to my surprise the screw on the left side did not tighten. It just turned and turned. So, Either the screw threads were stripped “impossible” or whatever the screws’ threads are trying to bite into is not working.

If you take a flashlight and look into the lock “hole” you will see a very small gold “nut”. This nut is what the screw go into. After turning the screw, I was that the gold nut was also turning. Now how to fix that?

If you have a small jeweler’s screwdriver commonly used for glasses (Walgreens 99 cents), you can simply stabilize this nut and then tighten the screw. The nut has threads on the outside to allow this. Once complete and screw is tight enough for you liking, replace the rubber circles.

Your display should now turn off when closing it.

As far as WiFi problems, I would suggest uninstalling the “HP Connections” application or at least taking it out of the startup using msconfig cmd.

Thanks for the site, hopes this posting helps.

I have a dv9000 notebook out of warranty. HP just agreed to fix my notebook for free. I mentioned this site. They said there is no design flaw, that the guy running this site is just looking for money (citing the donations link), and they “we will be shutting him down soon.”

I don’t know if that’s just unfounded bluster from one of their case workers, but it probably didn’t hurt to have this site to add credibility to my claim that this is a design flaw.

My next notebook will probably be a MacBook simply because the engineering quality on them is first rate. This HP (monster) notebook could have been made better than it is, regarding the hinge and the–as I understand it–overheating issue that causes the hinge issue, but it’s been a fairly decent laptop. I think the size, weight, and hinge assembly was the main problem.

I searched the internet and found this site. Now i know its an HP design flaw. Now I just shuy it down without closing the display I’m afraid of the cracking sound it makes whenever I open it. I’ll try to contact HP regarding this matter.

I called about the same problem hinge cracked on left side a silver washer fell out , screen split about four inches up left side. Will not close, I called the number for support they would not for the life of me let me talk to a case manager just said over and over again you are out of warranty and will have to pay by the minute to continue this conversation. His accent was so bad that it could have ran into thousands of dollars. Agian I asked please let me talk to a case manager they would not. So if you get a number for a case worker please post it here I found this one above (605) 875-1501 I heard they are changing these numbers at a break neck speed so the more the better. I will try this one today, if they will not put us through maybe we can call direct. Good Luck all.

The left hinge of my HP dv9000 failed on me, as well. The hinge seized up and the pressure caused the left side of the display casing to separate. I have to hold the casing together at the base of the display near the hinge, gently close it, and after lowering the display press firmly at the hinge on the back of the display to securely close the laptop.

A brief look at replacement parts online shows that the replacement parts are outrageously expensive. I do believe the repair folks that have spoken to some of the previous posters in saying it’s cheaper to buy a new laptop outright than to have them repair it.

Update, HP web site now has acknowledged that this is a problem. I called 1-866-671-7362 from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm MST, 7 days a week. I told them the notebooks hinge had cracked and split also would not detect the wireless network. At first they said I had to have a case number, I had never been able to talk to any one so I did not have a number. I told them this in a calm manner very important stay calm and be polite, I told them Hp’s own site had put the above number on the site to deal with this very problem. Also about this site they put me through to Jeff he is sending me a box to mail the notebook in for FREE yes FREE repair. The Hp site says if your PC is within 24 months of original purchase date they will repair it Free of charge, here is a list of notebooks covered under the recall. (HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 and Compaq Presario v3000/v6000 Series Notebook PCs). I run a small IT business here in Melbourne. I’ve owned a DV9000 series for about 18 months and had the left hinge crack issue. I decided to speak to HP first and also got the run around. I then decided to speak to some contacts about parts so I could repair it myself. If anyone would like an obligation free quote for repairing/replacing the broken parts of the laptop, please go to http://www.davidadamsit.com.au and go to the contact page and send me an email. I will be more than happy to assist you.

Last week I got the broken hinge problem too!

I called 877 917 4380 x 94 first. The person I spoke with Said that this was actually a common problem, but I needed to speak with tech support first.

I then called 800-474-6834, spoke with a lady there, who really didn’t care what my problem was. It was going to cost $298. She’d never even heard of the problem, and when I requested to speak with someone else, she refused. I asked her why the other man said it was common and she had never heard of it? She just gave me canned answers.

I waited about 10 minutes and called the first number again. I was calm, even though by now I was pretty irritated, at least admit it’s a problem, ya know?

I went around with this second lady a bit, she’s trying to explain that Hp can’t be held to stories on third party websites. I explained that I did fully understand that, however I was curious why there were hundreds, if not thousands of people with the same problem as I had, and she’d never heard of it. She said the only known issues they were addressing were x, x, and wireless. Well I spoke up and said, you know my wireless went out last month too, I thought it was something I had done or could fix, I didn’t realize it was a widespread problem. She said yes that they are fixing that under a warranty enhancement program and could send my computer back free of charge. And she asked again about my monitor. I said, no it’s not the monitor, the monitor is fine, it’s just the plastic casing/hinge around it. Oh, well we’ll fix that why we have it back too then no charge.

    Suddenly that $298 went away.

Regardless how they wanted to sugar coat it, they’re fixing it right now. *whew*

Hi guys! Well, the exact same thing happened to my DV9000 laptop. A cracked left hinge and the subsequent splitting of the plastic casing. Prior to taking it in for a warranty repair, i googled the problem, discovered this site, and all your comments, and pre-empted a fight im going to have when booking it in. Well, suprisingly, in my country, South Africa, the company that handles HP south africas repairs, AXIZ (www.axiz.co.za) told me they are aware of the problem, and that the warranty covers it. I picked up my laptop today (One day after booking it in) and it was fixed free of charge!

Same problem here, left side hinge, plastic rear case cover all broken. I disassembled it and found the screws were no longer connected to anything, as the plastic which they were screwed into has all broken away.

Typically all the web sites charge about $145 for the replacement case lid. But I just ordered a replacement rear cover from a guy on ebay for $112 including shipping. I am a little worried as the actual metal hinge seems very hard to move. I’m going to try and oil it when I do the cover replacement.

I originally thought replacing the front bezel will be fine but after reading there it sounds like this is a hinge problem instead. My question is do I need to replace the hinge? It seems I’m in good company. I bought my dv9000 in May 2007 and the hinge on the left side cracked about a month ago. I just got off a chat line with HP Service and was informed “I am amfraid to say that the Notebook is out of warranty…At this point od time I recommend you to contaact the local support of nearest service center….As the issue is with the hardware malfunction of the hinges in the Notebook.” I bought the notebook AND extended warranty from CompUSA and, since they are out of business, HP directed me to Best Buy. Instead I am going to call the number provided above and see where that gets me. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Same problem here. Unfortunately found this site after speaking to customer service. DV9205 us left hinge cracked, wireless went out, and working on my fourth power adapter. Purchased February 2007 so they told me I would have to pay for the power cord and hinge replacement. After explaining that I could guarantee every issue was a HP issue due to excessive heat and poor design I was sent a box and told the power cord would be free, but there is a possibility I might have to pay for the hinge replacement. Fortunately they will not replace the hinge if they are going to try and charge me before calling and I now have a site with all of the stories backing my claim of poor design.

The problem is not the hinge but the plastic back plate the the screws for the hinge go into. over the course of opening and closing the lid the screws loosen and eventually cause the hinge to become lose which causes the bezel and back plate to have a popping sound and or separation of the enclosure. If your computer is out of warranty there are two solutions replace the back plate were the plastic for the hinge screws has broke or open the enclosure and superglue the plastic pieces and the little screw nuts back together. Too replace the back plate and cost about $50 and takes about 1:30 hr, to superglue the pieces back together is about 2:30 hrs and basically free. I personally have super-glued the the pieces back together and has worked fine for about 6 months now if it breaks again i will replace the back plate. The hinge is not the problem but cheaply made plastic nut holders for the hinge screws to go into too.

I chatted with HP today and was told it would cost $298 to be fixed. I said this was unacceptable and asked to have a case manager call me. I will post the results of my talk. I couldn’t believe it when I typed in the problem I am having with my HP 17″ Laptop LEFT hinge broken and splitting up the center of the side of the screen is a common problem and seems to be a manufacturing.

I need to get HP to repair this as I know you all are aware this was not cheap and the costs to repair seem extraordinary and should be the burden of the manufacturer as it seems to be too common.

I did not abuse the computer in any way and it started as a cracking sound every time I lifted the lid and when I would look I couldn’t see until just the other day I saw the spit going up the complete LEFT side.

I will contact HP and see what I can do in the meantime if anyone has a direct line, person, dept I would appreciate it. THANKS

Hi All: Well I too have a DV9000 and to my surprise when I googled how to repair I got this site! Well, thank goodness for communication and consumers sharing their experiences. So, I called HP and after about 20 minutes of waiting for the proper customer service and he told me that my computer was out of warranty. Well, now tell me something I don’t know…. I said with a stern but polite tone that I realized the computer is out of warranty however, this is not a user problem that this IS a MANUFACTURING problem and they should be obligated to fix it. The tech told me I needed to purchase the extended warranty before he could help me further. I told him why should I purchase a warranty to fix this problem when clearly based on all the people complaining on line that have the same problem should I have to pay. He asked me what the web site was and I provided him with this website and the INQUIRE web site that had an equal amount of complaints from DV9000 notebook owners and he said he needed to put me on hold and talk to his supervisor and investigate what I had told him. Within 5 minutes he came back to the phone and said that HP will repair my computer at no charge!! I am on hold right now waiting for my service # and he said he will be sending me a box to send the computer out to the repair facility. According to my customer service person they confirmed with HP that indeed the DV9000 is faulty and they are REPLACING my computer not repairing it!!

good luck and I hope this helps you

Bernando: It sounds really weird that they would be replacing an out of warrenty pc not just part of the chassis. When calling the Norwegian support there is no problem getting this fixed even out of warrenty. The problem is what people you talk to. If you talk to an experienced tec agent they will know that this had been an issue for a long time and they will know that HP has told them to service these units. If you talk to and inexperinced agent he will know that in general they don’t service out of warrenty units and might not have heard of this issue before.

Called HP that same day and they offered to fix if for me, but they cannot send me the parts to do it myself..for the low price of $399 CDN. Called Staples, where it was purchased, and they said they may be able to order the part at their cost of around $90 but would have to do the installation. I’m currently shopping around. I called back again x11 and got Kevin W. I acted like I didn’t know anything about the wide spread problem. I said I was inquiring about a repair. He looked me up, told me I was out of warrenty, but they would do a one time repair for me free of charge. I asked them to check the wireless for issues also. They are sending fedex box. He was very nice.

My advice, be nice to the person and give them a chance to tell them what they can do for you. If you don’t get the answer you’re looking for, call back and try someone else. It worked for me!

I have a dv9009nr which I purchased from Best Buy in 11/2006. I actually purchased 2 identical models on the same date, one for me, the other for my business partner. His machine has operated with absolutely no problems. I on the other hand have had all kinds of memory errors, even sent it back to HP for repair. The problem still persists. I just live with that problem and hope for the best.
Now I have this recent problem with the hinge and cracked case. I called HP, was told I was out of warranty and that the repair was not covered. I use the computer for businees, transport it regularly, and need it fixed. I was told it would be $298 plus applicable tax. I agreed and was given an order number. They have charged my card and a box is on the way via FedEx.
I was a bit upset to have such an expensive repair as I always transport the computer in a proper case. For some reason I started looking online and I found this site. I called HP back, they agreed to the repair….for FREE, then I mentioned my order number. All of a sudden they asked me a couple more questions and now the repair is not covered and the charge remains. I asked to speak with a case manager who further substantiated the same story, so I asked to go to the next level and am currently awaiting a call back on Monday.
Hopefully HP will stand behind their product. I will come back to this site to publish my results.

My HP dv9000 from best buy started to crack so I help the left corner by the hinge until it finaly broke, the screen is still fine but I am worried about it breaking. It broke at the year mark so did not bother calling about having it fixed under coverage. but after reading this site I am hoping that HP will get their act and can have this fixed.

My DV hinge cracked a week after warranty ran out, unfortunatly i didnt find this page until today. i ended up getting hinges of Ebay for 40$ shipping included. ind now the backlamps on lcd dont work :) i think the inverter got busted while i was taking the system apart. Word of advice, DONT FIX IT YOUR SELF, UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. but the parts a cheap and they are widley available.

HP apparently now recognizes the broken hinge as a “known problem” and is repairing the hinge on my HP notebook computer for free. I purchased a DV9000t in December 2006. As it is now October 2008, the notebook is nearly a year out of warranty. I went to HP chat support (http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/contact/chat_1.html) last night. The chat specialist said he couldn’t do anything but would bump me up to a higher level. About 12 hours later HP called, the specialist said this was a known problem and they would repair it for free. They are sending a box for return to a service center. So far, so good. Everything was very pleasant.

I am on my second HP dv9000 Laptop. Both computers have experienced the same left hinge problem. I was lucky enough to have bought the computer from Costco before they changed their return policy and returned the first laptop for another one. The second dv9000 is doing the same thing, accept now I can not return the computer as time has passed 90 days for Costco and I am past one year for HP. We need a class action law suit to force HP to do right by their customers.

I purchased a dv9000 laptop in March 2007 and the hinge on the left side broke about 4 months ago. I contacted hp and they in turn sent me the part #’s for me to purchase to repair my laptop. but at this time I don’t have the money to buy or pay for getting it repaired. Looks like HP should do something about this wide spread problem, at this point I would never purchase anything HP again. In the past I have always been satisfied with there products not anymore!! I have to leave my laptop open all the time now just to be able to use it.

Purchased my DV9000Z new 1/06/2007 in Australia.
Hinge cracked 08/2008 then screen casing split open.
I have been talking to HP with no result they claim that it is a known problem with the DV9000z but from my serial number they claim mine is a DV9013cl and as it is not a known problem with that model they can’t help me.
My invoice states DV9000Z ? I’m still battling but hitting a brick wall.

The complaint process apperas designed to frustrate and discourage consumers from furthering their complaint , or am I reading too much into it.

I purchased my DV9000 in Feb 2007, and the hinge broke about 5 months ago. It gotten so bad, that I quit using it as a laptop and now only use it on my desk. Like post 295, I can in no way afford the repairs for this product and feel this is definately a design problem that HP needs to take care of for the customer.

I posted on Oct 29 that my dv9000–a year out of warranty–was accepted by HP for free repair of the hinge. The box came, I sent it in, and it was returned today. Not only was the hinge repaired (they replaced the bezel (the plastic that goes around the screen) and the lcd cover). Plus, totally unexpected, the system board was replaced (I indicated on the repair slip that there were bootup problems). So, guys, I don’t know what the difference is but HP sure worked for me. The hinge area works fine (but I’m going to be real careful about opening and closing it anyway), and the computer boots up perfectly (knock on wood).

I don’t know if there is a “key” to getting it fixed, but here’s how I did it:

I went to HP support chat, explained the issue with the hinge, referred to this website, and remained patient and nonconfrontational. The chat support person came back online after about a minute, said he had checked the website, didn’t have the authority to authorize a fix, but said he would bump me up the chain where he thought I would “get satisfaction.” He said I would get a call from a HP support specialist in 24 - 48 hours (I assumed this is where everything would fall apart). But, lo and behold, within 12 hours a fellow from HP called, said this was a ‘known problem,’ and that HP would cover the repair. And everybody involved knew my dv9000 was nearly a year out of warranty. I don’t think I was either online or on the phone for more than an hour total.

At least one dv9000 owner is really, really happy to have stumbled across this website!

Hey guys I also have a HP DV9000 series laptop and have had the same problem with the screen hinge cracking and coming apart on the left side by the lock hole. I was also suffering from the “wifi” issue where my wifi would disappear which is apparently a common issue on these notebooks. The wifi issue is actually a motherboard problem and HP has issued a recall on the motherboards for this. So if anybody is having the hinge crack issue you CAN get it repaired. HP has a service enhancement program on the HP website that explains the recall on the motherboards. All you have to do is call HP and explain that your laptop is having the disappearing wifi issue and they will ship you a return box. When you receive the return box fill out the repair form and make sure you document that your screen hinge is coming apart. It seems that the repair department doesnt verify what repairs are supposed to be done on each specifc laptop they receive so when they receive a product, they repair everything that is documented on the repair form. When I filled out my repair form I stated I was having the wifi issue, LCD screen hinge was cracked/coming apart, and that my notebook felt like it was overheating. When I got my laptop back, they replaced my motherboard with the updated version, replaced the LCD screen hinge and housing, and replaced my fan and heatsink! So if your having any issue with your laptop use this recall to get your notebook fixed!!

Hi, I had a 17” LCD HP pavilion laptop, the dv6000 series for almost 3 years (3 years in February). I also purchased the 3 year extended warranty at staples, for an additional $360 bucks. I recently had some hinge problems, so I called and they sent me a box to mail the laptop in- 3 weeks later I got it back, but it was in 2 pieces! they didn’t even put it back together after they took it apart! Had a note on it saying “warranty denied- physical damage”. I called them and they said internal parts were broken so it couldn’t be put back together. I asked why they even took it apart if the hinge wouldn’t be covered- they did not know why- but they did admit they took it apart and sent it back in 2 pieces, and while taking it apart they also cracked the plastic lcd frame as well.

It took over 30 different calls between staples, the warranty center (which is a 3rd party affiliate- it isn’t staples who does the warranty- staples only sold it to me) and the repair company (which is a 4th party affiliate). They all blamed each other- the repair company blamed the warranty company saying they told them to deny warranty services, the warranty company blamed the repair place for damaging it but said regardless they don’t cover physical damage- since the original problem was the hinge, they are sorry but they are denying service.

To make a long story short, I called the staples presidents office- I told them my story and said if they don’t cover the broken hinge that’s ok- as the laptop still worked before I shipped it for repair (Just the screen wabbled- the laptop was functional though). I just don’t know why they continued to take it apart causing more damage, and sent it back to me in 2 pieces. And when I say 2 pieces no I am not kidding- the LCD’s internal wires were actually disconnected from the mainboard. so staples “asked the warranty company to honor the warranty” and staples said they will do it for them as a favor (because they keep the warranty company in business, by selling there warranty service). So PC Mall (dont know how they got involved- but they said they are calling to replace my laptop - so we negotiated, and they sent me an HP pavilion dv9743cl, (refurbished).
I did some research and saw I wasn’t alone on the original hinge problem though- tons of complaints about the hinge breaking on the HP pavilion laptops, including the dv6000 and dv9000 series laptops. So I got my new laptop 2 days ago, its in nearly perfect condition- the only thing that concerns me is near the hinges, on both hinges there are lots of micro scratches. Looks worse in the photos then it does in person- but all the pix are on this page: http://cellprophones.com/laptop/index.html

Since every inch of the laptop looks brand new, just the hinge area has lots of micro scratches, I am concerned that they have experienced lots of stress already. So are these “minor scratches” from the previous owner, or is it the start of a hinge problem? I am concerned because it only has a 90 day warranty, and I know if the hinge does break, they are really not going to work with me at all this time- since the only reason they originally helped me was because the presidents office of staples had to ask them to do it. So- what do you think?

I have a dv9030ea which was purchased in 01/2006 and and have had the same problem with the screen hinge cracking and coming apart on the left side by the lock hole, the hinge coming away has also damaged the screen.

We are in the UK and the notebook is out of warranty and HP will not accept that there is a defect with this model so will cost £300 to fix.

Very poor customer service, I mentioned this web site and the said that they wouldn’t look at 3rd party sites and wouldn’t accept that the problem is a known defect !

I read some of the comments and did exactly what was recommended. They are going to repair my computer AND replace the lcd screen that was damaged due to the separation of the plastic. My husband blamed me for breaking it, but I am so glad that it is going to be fixed for free. I will agree with one of the posts that you have to be nice. I kissed some major A** and it only took about 20 minutes to get everything done. Thanks for all the advice.

I too have recently had this problem - when opening the lid hearing a popping/crackling sound and now a brocken hinge and a Notebook that can not be closed.

I have a DV9000 HP Pavillion showing EZ459UAR#ABA and 2CB65106FT - which complies with the HP Limited Service Enhancement. However, it would appear that only notebooks pruchased in the US and Canada qualify for this Service. I am told that because I purchased my Notebook here in Australia I am not entitled to the Service. I am quite appalled at the response I have received from HP so far.

Initially I took the Notebook back to the supplier to have it repaired. Unfortunately they are having problems obtaining the replacement hinge. Hence my suggestion that I try to find the part via the internet to save some time. I then came across this site which led me to the HP Service Site. Since then I have made in excess of 12 phone calls and been passed from pillar to post by HP representatives until eventually I was informed by HP I would have to pay $150.15 up front to their their Australian ‘out of warranty’ providers to obtain a quote for repairs. And guess what ??? the representative for HP in my region just happens to be where I purchased my Notebook and where it currently sits awaiting repairs which no doubt will eventually be charged to me also.

At present I am totally at a loss as to which way to go from here.

HP have acknowledge this problem with these notebooks and have offered to correct same. However if purchased out of the USA or Canada they are not accepting the responsibility even though they have providers and suppliers here in Australia.

This is my 5th HP Notebook over the past few years, but after this, the next certainly won’t be HP.

My nephew opened my laptop - an HP DV9000 and I heard a loud crack and later discovered that a screw had popped loose from the left hinge. I had to close it carefully for a few weeks before it cracked completely and seperated from the screen. I have had the laptop for 2 years without any problems until this. It is a 17″ widescreen. I did purchase the extended warrenty, thank goodness, and it was covered, and it shows that the cost of repair was around $450. But I now have a new problem. Since I got it back, my wifi doesn’t work in my home anymore. It’s very wierd because it works in other places after a bit, but in my home, it doesn’t recognize the wifi signals around my home. I never had a problem picking up unsecured signals around my home before (wrong I know) but now, it doesn’t pick them up. I took it back to Best Buy and they told me that they had done some sort of update and changed the preferred network to HP so it may be looking for the HP network. THe guy changed something, but it still isn’t working. Then someone told me that there is a problem with HP DV9000 and DV6000’s which are being recalled and sent me a link to check it out to see if mine was a part of it. Unfortunately, I don’t think it is. I was talking to someone at HP and we were cut off and I am waiting for him to call me back. If anyone is interested, here is the link. Hope if you are having the same kinds of problems with your computer not recognizing wifi, that it’s included in the free repair recall. http://www.fixya.com/support/t535891-hp_dv9000_wireless_card_not_working

My HP DV9000 that I bought from Costco.com in Oct.’06 had the left side crack a few months ago.

I just sent it in for the (presumably free) repair, and
so have yet to see the results.

Before finding this website I just assumed that it must have been me (though I never dropped or mishandled it), but it is now clear that the plastic was not adequately designed/spec’d for the heat.

I will definitely not buy another HP computer again.

Any manufacturer can make a mistake, but it seems that
HP’s handling of this by refusing to admit the problem in a timely manner is reminiscent of China’s milk companies when they knew of the melamine contamination years ago.

This happened to me during the summer of 2008 in August with a computer I bought in January of 2007. The left side of the LCD started to crack and you could see the insides. Could not close the laptop or it would get worst. Went to the HP site and chatted to the online tech people. They said I was eligible for a free fix even though I was out of warranty. They quickly sent the box to send the laptop. I sent the laptop and within a week and a half I received my laptop back fixed and looking brand new.

    Hi,

I wanted to know if Australian customers are eligible for free repair from HP?

I am using HP Pavilion dv9205TX - Intel Core2Duo 2 GHz processor, 2 GHz RAM, 320 HDD, 512 MB nVidia GeForce Go7600 GPU, 17″ LCD monitor, 64-bit Vista Ultimate. I bought the laptop in July 07 and started experiencing display problem in Dec 08.

Who’s the best person in HP Australia to get in touch with who can understand and arrange for a free repair of this manufacturing defect?

Thanks in advance for your help.

My dv9040us has been great to me for years and still runs everything I need it to, the problem is that the hinge on the right started going about four months ago. In that time I have tried contacting HP to see if there was some way to fix it but of course my one year warranty is up (Having purchased the laptop in December ‘06 ) and all the ones I have found online to buy are all expensive as all get out. It’s surprising just how expensive something like that can be when it’s merely a plastic and hinge replacement. Anybody else had any luck getting it with an expired warranty in any sort of way. Even paying so much as it isn’t costing an arm and a leg/

    Hi All,

It appears that HP has recognized the issue with my Dv9013ca. (Canadian) After calling Tech support a few months ago after reading this post, I insisted that they repair my unit. (Out Of warranty) I had to insist on speaking with a Customer Case manager who promptly called me back the next day. She said “we don’t admit there is an issue but will fix it for you this time only as a courtesy”. i shipped the Laptop back to hp and in about 10 business days I received my unit back with brand new hinges, brand new front bezel and brand new lid.

A Few weeks ago I noticed an email from HP saying that they have officially recognized this as an issue with the Dv9000 series and will repair any unit that experiences this problem for free. They have also said that if you paid for a hinge repair prior to December 31 2008 they will reimburse you.

    Please see service enhancement notification.

I just purchased an HP 2000 5 1/2 months ago and I am having this same problem. Apparently it started a while ago but I did not notice til now. My roomate said that he noticed it but did not say nothing to me, because he did not think it was that big of a problem. However, today it cracked all the way up the left side by the hinge. There is no popping it back together. I rarely use the laptop as I am not a student anymore but work all day. It never leaves my apartment except on occasional weekends, where it is kept in a safe case. I have not talked with HP about this issue yet, but thank God my issue started now before my warranty is up. They BETTER honor that, cause according to many testimonials HP falsy accuses people of abusing their laptops. Who would pay a crap load of money (and not buy insurance) if they are the kind of person to abuse something they buy. That is stupid and personally, I may never buy an HP device again after seeing all the issues other people have had. I have been a loyal customer for years and never had a problem with any HP device, but I guess the laptops are known to be problematic. I will post later to let everyone know how my quest for a repair turns out. Thankfully I did not purchase a store warranty, because if I had, it would have been a waste since that store has gone out of business. (Circuit City).

I sent in my dv9233cl under the Left Hinge Service program. I just received it back 10 days ago. I did not send my hard drives when I submitted it for repair. I reinstalled the drives upon return and everything seemed to be fine.

Now I find that the Real Time Clock (RTC) no longer keeps accurate time. If I close the lid (sleep mode) it will stop the clock at the time of sleep. If I leave the computer open (awake), the clock runs slow - clocking only about 15 minutes when an hour has passed. If I’m using the computer - browsing web, Office, etc. It keeps accurate time.

My warranty runs out in 7 days - I’ve had it nearly two years. HP has agreed to “repair” it again. So we’ll see what happens.

Just curious if anyone else has had the Left Hinge Service completed and had this RTC error.

Note: BIOS is F29 (most current is F2D), but I’m hesitant to flash the bios, as it may create other problems.

I just sent my notebook back on Thursday 19 FEB 09. They recieved it. Updated their website showing it was in warranty for Hinge repair.

    I checked the website tonight:

    “Order type:PROBABLY BEYOND ECONOMIC REPAIR
Failure : LEFT DISPLAY HINGE BREAKAGE
    Warranty status: out of warranty
    Service charge: $1087.82 ”

WHAT ON EARTH! It works freaking fine. Fix the damn hinge and send it back.

In the work report the technician wrote it had liquid on motherboard, ram, and hard drive?

HARD DRIVE? Isn’t that enclosed beneath the notebook?

I’m calling B.S. because I have never spilled a damn thing on my notebook. Perhaps sneezed on it and if that caused a grand worth of failures the engineers who designed it need to be taken out back.

Hey HP! Fix the hinge. Quit F*ing around and send it back.

Else I will file a complaint with ever consumer organization I can think of and consider calling the police and filing a report.

On a good note. The customer service people are very professional.

    I DONT BELIEVE THIS!!!

I just found this site, and like Seth Bergman, I had the same problems with my HP DV9010 screen splitting and repaired it twice myself (I didnt think they would fix it after the warranty expired, by 3 weeks!)

Then it shut down on me and I contacted live chat service and was told that it was a warrantied power issue and that them ‘may’ even replace the broken screen.

They had me fedex it to them and after 2 weeks told me a ‘foreign liquid’ was found on the logic board and caused the failure!

I received a ticket like Seths –> (along these lines) Order type:PROBABLY BEYOND ECONOMIC REPAIR
    Failure : Logic board failure
    Warranty status: out of warranty
Service charge: $1000.00 plus dollars ”

What are they doing, scamming all of us with the same story.

I am going to try this link i just found :
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01611512

But I am not going to hold my breath since they are telling a LOT of people the same ‘ you spilled somthing on your laptop and ruined it, WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE!’

I hope we bankrupt them with thousands of us hitting them for replacements, not to mention the class action lawsuits!

I’m 2 months without my hp dv9000 notebook. The hinge cracking has manifested another issue: my display monitor. HP repair techs were to replace my damaged factory monitor with a new monitor… the factory monitor I had was WSXGA… these jerks gave me a lower res. monitor WXGA. Everytime I call to file a complaint they give me the run-around. I’m so upset. I don’t know what to do. I’ve even filed a complaint on the HP support site. Still waiting for my CASE MANAGER to call. I’ve spoken to about 12 Indian support people. Nobody at HP support is from America, oddly enough. It’s making communicating my problem that much more difficult because the techs have a hard time dictating my complaint to their superiors.

my message to the support center:

I am a graphic designer who has not been able to use my laptop for the past 2 months because of defective parts, HP foul ups + repair errors. Repair Technicians replaced my left hinge about 1 month ago — this was covered by extended warranty as HP discovered this to be a major inherent problem with all dv9000 notebooks. Anyhow, when replacing the hinge, the repair technicians must have cracked the monitor display; therefore, it needed to be replaced. The monitor was to be replaced by HP, which it was and I was satisfied with this. But as a result of the hinge problem, a new issue has arrived. When the monitor was replaced by technicians, they failed to check my factory purchase + without doing so, they gave me the wrong model display for my dv9000 notebook. I had a WSXGA monitor — 1680×1050 maximum resolution, and the repair center gave me a lower grade WXGA monitor — 1440 x 900.
Please provide previous troubleshooting steps, or information that can help HP assist you.: Not only did I pay extra for the WSXGA, but this monitor has a better contrast setting than the WXGA. Being that I’m a graphic design professional, I needed a higher resolution monitor as it provides increased desktop real estate. Also, text can images can be viewed more crisply than that of a lower resolution display.
Has anything changed since the unit functioned properly (installation of SW, settings, cabling, etc.): No. I sent the computer back to HP - which customer care center has all of my information and ticket numbers on file. Also, they issued me a FedEX box, so I shipped the computer back. But the repair Center didn’t replace the WXGA monitor with a new WSXGA monitor. Instead, they shipped the computer back to me in the same condition, with the same issue. So… Now I have a new box to ship back to the repair center, but I am waiting for a Case Manager to call me or e-mail me or make some effort to assist me with this issue. HP has cost me hundreds of dollars in losses because I’ve had to turn down design work because I have no computer to work with. This has been going on for the last 2 months. It’s ridiculous! And while I love HP products, I’m not so sure that I’ll be purchasing anymore products from HP if this issue is not rectified and resolved within the next week.

I do not believe that the left broken buldging hinge which caused the entire screen to be off kilter didn’t cause the damage to the cable. I will never purchase a HP again.

Called HP CS anyway. First rep told me my product number was not covered. Asked to speak to a supervisor. Waited 5-10 minutes. Supervisor said program had expired. No mention of my product being ineligible. I mentioned this website and reminded supervisor that crack occured while free repair program was active. I refused to accept no for an answer. Supervisor passed me on to case manager who offered me 10-day repair for $150 (includes parts, labor, tax & shipping). I accepted. I can’t do repair myself and think offer was reasonable considering age of machine. Just want to get another year out of this machine. If HP delivers on its promise and continues to stand by its products, I might consider buying another HP product. Will keep in touch.

Called tech support, got a case number hence case manger, missed his call, i called back, got another who could not do a thing. Escalated it to her supervisor ( apparently she is the final say) and i got ” the let me educate you about HP sermon! Let me educate YOU about HP! was my answer. Got the corporate number from her, called them, executive support transferred me back to miss education! Same result, without the lesson this time. Wrote to the CEO as per the link on this site, got customer service to call me back to tell me that they are really sorry but her decision is final. Sorry does not fix my notebook. So instead of keeping me as a valued customer, they would rather cheap out on $75 vs the ($2100 avg x 5) = $10500 they have from me but will lose my business in the future. That makes real financial sense. Go HP integrity. Stick to your guns no matter what. All in all my family will stop been an HP family. We have 15 HP notebooks, watch these turn into SONYS in the next 3-5 years. I have filled a complaint with the BBB, am guessing the last option will be the charm! It failed a second time, this time out of warranty. I called HP and they agreed to fix it for no charge. It was fixed for the second time. Since then, I got the recall notice from HP, but I thought the problem had been fixed, so I didn’t send it in. It just failed again! I called HP and they say that the recall has expired and I have to pay $300 (minimum) to get it fixed. I wasn’t aware that HP would stand up behind their product, but I didn’t know about the repair program until after the deadline. Unfortunately, I have had to purchase a new computer due to HP only standing behind their products for a brief period of time. These plastic hinges are crap, and they know it. They told me it would be almost $400 to repair the monitor hinges. Left hinge just broke and I noticed the time expired for the recall program. I called HP anyway and wanted to know why they didn’t replace the defective hinge in October when they had my laptop for a fan replacement. They said they would only replace the hinge if it was broken, and only upon request, even though it is a defective, recalled part. Well, it is now broken, but past the expiration date of the recall program. Convenient, isn’t it? They said they would be happy to fix it for $398 plus tax. Considering it is 3 years old and a new laptop is $1000, I will buy a new one, but not an HP. By the looks of this post, they are losing a lot of business over a hinge that they couldv’e fixed.

I have grown accustomed to watching technology evolve, not de-evolve into some kind of disposable mockery - and that’s what I see when I look at an HP/Compaq Notebook. They wanted to make everything cheap - but to be fair, that’s what people wanted. You need a balance of both - cheap laptops break.

I bought a dv9000 (dv9288ea) model in Feb2007 and the left hinge has just broken. I have contacted HP who refuse to accept any liability and also Comet in the UK where I purchased it and they too refused to accept any liability saying it was out of warranty.
Not happy to accept thias situation I called trading standards who confirmed to me that in the UK and also Ireland consumers have a 6 year guarantee on products that they purchase and that they do have some redress against this issue but it’s with the company that sold them the laptop not the manufacturer. I have now written a formal letter to Comet asking them to provide a repair, as the goods were not satisfactory quality for purpose intended. Liklihood is that they’ll offer a reduced repair cost pro-rata to the age of the laptop in relation to the 6 year guarantee. ie if 2 years old that would represent a 66.6% reduced repair tag.

Suffice to say it’s HP that I’m annoyed with, as this is clearly a major issue and they have decided to take the stance that they are not going to do the honourablr thing and I guess they must believe that in the long run it will be cheaper for them to say no rather than say yes or possibly even yes with an apology attached.

I think everyone who is refused full compensation with this issue should state on this website that they will actively not buy any more HP product and additionally that they will tell everyone they know just how poorly HP has treated them.

I may only have x2, HP laptops, x1 desktop, x3 printers, x1 22″ lcd screen and an Ipaq but I’ll certainly not be ever buying anymore HP producr unless they resolve this issue to my satisfaction. Let’s face it chaps, repair or no repair these laptops are going to continually fail.

My next task is to write to the CEO of HP UK to see what action if any he’s prepared to take. The whole situation really sucks! and is what I call corporate theft.

Update.. Got a tel call from Comet which was anything but positive. They said they would charge me £49 to assess the repair if I took the laptop into one of their stores or £59 if they sent someone to my house. Whatever the result of this assesment that fee wasn’t recoverable and I would have to pay for 100% of any repair. I told Comet that this wasn’t acceptable and asked them to put it all in writing so I could go back to trading standards for further advice. Talk about trying to close ranks! I shall not cave in to this type of bullying it just makes me even more resolved to get a fair resolution.

I have a HP Pavillion dv9000 17 inch laptop as well… I’ve had it since Dec 2006, and my friends refer to it as my “baby” because I take such careful measures with it. I’m pretty shocked to learn that the casing is cracked at the left hand corner, near the key hole sign… I am saddened. I just found it at work, so I’m going to call afterwards, but I most definitely can not wait 4 weeks for it to get fixed, because -all- of my college work is done on this thing. Sigh.

I went through the same problems. After some time I got HP to replace the hinges for free, then when they shipped it back to me, Fed Ex damaged it. Fed Ex sent an inspector to check the package and agreed that it was their fault. They told me that I could not make a claim for the damage, it had to be made by HP because they were the shipper. Hp refused to make the claim, so Fed Ex would not pay to have the computer repaired. After weeks of talking to both FedEx and HP they both told me that they didn’t want to be bothered with me any more, and to stop calling. I’ll never buy another HP product.

I got my laptop in Feb 07, figured oh sh*t happens til a friend of mine said same thing happened to his and that there was a website and wow was not hard to find at all on google. go figure. I purchased my HP Pavilion dv9233cl Notebook a couple years ago and about 2 months ago the lid popped and the left side by the lock whole came apart - as many have said here. It is still usable at this time but seems to be getting worse. I would be interested in fixing it if it doesn’t cost too much or I wouldn’t mind trying to take it apart to see if it can be fixed.

Please post if anyone has a solution. This looks like it is definitely a recall situation.

I have the same issue with mine as well…talked with HP this past week, and they will not fix mine either…and I am covered with a four year warranty!!! They said the offer to fix it expired in May of 2009-and is no longer valid with them. Really upsets me, as I have purchased two laser printers (aprx $600 each) and another desktop computer at aprx $999…with extended warranties on all them as well…all within the last 365 days. HP needs to service their customers-or I will not be buying anymore of their items either. Thanks for letting me post to your thread-I truly hope it will help to get results for all of us!!

I purchased a DV9008nr on 12-06-06. It never left the house or desk, as it was a desktop replacement, but it was closed after each use to keep the dust out. Today the left hinge cracked upon opening the device. I guess that I am out of luck - BUT - HP is also out of luck since I also had a DV 6000 series laptop with a fried motherboard due to the recalled fan speed control. I am done with these people and their defective goods.

My left and right hinge both cracked. It really ticks me off to hear that they admitted they had a defective product, repaired them for a while, but now they will not repair mine since they decided to put an expiration date on customer service.

I’ve been a big HP advocate for a while. I will be no longer endorse their products. It’s going to cost me $300 + hours of my time to repair their defective product. I couldn’t be more upset.

I call HP because I have an extended warranty until 11/2013 but they say this is caused by damage and is not covered. Any one have any good suggestions.

Have same issue, bought dv9260us computer Feb 2007 at CompUSA $2300 out the door–was expecting to get 5yrs out of it since I bought top of line at the time. Rarely move it at all, usually leave it in same spot and chk email 4-5 times a week. Crack on left, popping when trying to open or close–gave no warning, was not having any issues with the closing until a couple days ago, seperating near security hole.

Based on the volume of posts, a class action sounds like good idea…how do we get started, and do we have to have a lawyer?

If getting new hinges will fix it, does someone know if instructions come with the hinges. If I tackle this myself, I will make a video and post in case others want to do the same (if it fixes the issue).

I found hinges for this computer on e-bay for $8.99 delivered. here’s the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-17-LCD-Hinges-Hinge-HP-Pavilion-DV9000-Display-/170378698853?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27ab5ca065
Also, a lawyer is looking into a class action suit. Here’s the link: http://www.lawyerseek.com/Practice/Consumer-Protection-C21/HP-DV9000-Laptop-Hinge-Cracks-P168/
I contacted HP and got no reply, so I gave my info to the lawyer, e-mailed HP’s CEO (through their “contact us” page) and bought the hinges on e-bay for the $8.99
Let’s let HP know it’s not OK to sell lemons and turn your back on your loyal customers.
